Usain Bolt and Tyson Gay will clash at World Championship…

usainSprinter Tyson Gay appears set to lead the charge as the United States bid to make up for Beijing disappointment at the 2009 athletics World Championships, their sights set on Usain Bolt and Jamaica.

Both Gay – owner of the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay world titles – and Bolt – who captured the same treble in sensational style at the Beijing Olympics – secured their places in the August World Champoinships in Berlin in their national trials at the weekend.

Gay, who has a bye as defending champion into both individual sprints, raced just once at the US championship in Eugene, but made it count with a wind-aided 9.75sec in the first round of the 100m.

“It lets me know my wheels are there,” said Gay who deemed his technical performance in his first 100m of the season “horrible”.

If he improves on that, particularly on his start, Gay said, Bolt’s world record of 9.69sec is within his power.

“Pretty much when I become more technically sound out of the blocks,” Gay said when asked when he might challenge the mark. “You have got to run 9.59 to beat him, that’s how I look at it, I have the mechanics. I have the coaching. It’s all there.”

Bolt shot back that he thought Gay, whose 2008 Olympic campaign was derailed by a hamstring injury suffered at the US trials, would have a hard time beating the record.

However it all pans out in Berlin, Gay said, “I’m looking forward to a fast race.”

While Gay chose to skip the 200m at Eugene, he had already sent a clear signal in that event with his 19.58 performance – the third-fastest in history – in New York in May.

The US trials also showcased some new faces, who will be hoping to help the Americans ease the memory of a sprint flop in Beijing. Not only did Jamaica’s men and women sweep the gold in the 100m and 200m, the United States botched both 4x100m relays.

Mike Rodgers, who was on the verge of giving up the sport two years ago, won the 100m. He had already made his presence felt this season with solid victories at the Reebok Grand Prix and Prefontaine Classic grand prix meeting.

Charles Clark in the 200m also punched his first World Championships ticket, as did 400m hurdler Johnny Dutch.

Dutch will be on a team that includes the Americans who swept the event in Beijing, gold medallist Angelo Taylor, silver medallist and defending world champion Kerron Clement and bronze medallist and current world leader Bershawn Jackson.

Veteran Shawn Crawford, the 2004 Olympic 200m champion, notched a convincing win in the 200 and insisted the issue in Berlin wouldn’t be revenge against Jamaica.

“We don’t have a revenge team,” he said. “We just have a USA team that’s going to compete at the best level we can. It’s not about revenge.

“It’s all about perfecting it, getting rid of those little mistakes we’re making – focusing, keeping your mind on the prize.”

Allyson Felix, the two-time defending world 200m champion who was relegated to silver in Beijing, admitted the sting of Olympic defeat was a motivator.

“I think we’re going to be really strong,” Felix said after winning the 200m US title. “I think everyone’s spirits are up. We’re looking to do well off of a difficult last year. I think everyone is really excited to get another chance to compete on a world stage.”

Voicemail – “Star of the Show”

Posted in MP3, NEW MUSIC1 Comment

Voicemail – ” Star of the Show”

StarOfTheShowFPrintVoicemail consist of 3 members: Oneil Edwards, Craig Jackson and Kevin Blaire. The group originally started out with Craig and 2 other members that became acquainted with each other in 1999 at a talent competition. In 2003 the group “Voicemail” was formed with the two new members Oneil and Kevin. Oneil is the son of Rupee Edwards – a well known Jamaican artist and producer. Before Kevin became a singer he use to work as a model. In turn Craig was motivated to developing an identity in music by his older brother who was a member of the “Scare dem crew.” Voicemail´s first big hit in Jamaica was entitled “Weh di Time”. After a collaboration with the dancer Bugle and the artist Delly Ranks Voicemail became more famous internationally and their music video for the song “Do What You Feel Like” was played by several TV stations in America. It quickly became obvious, that Voicemail´s unique dancing-style, draws attention internationally.

They first and foremost produced dance music for clubs, which combines their own creative ideas
with moves from the dance “Salsa”. This concept is reaching a high lifestyle which is attracting
teenagers and young adults that love to dance, extending across the boarders of Jamaica. Through
including R n’ B influences they set themselves apart and create attention not only in the USA but
also in Japan. Voicemail sold in 2007 their debut album “Hey” over 100,000 times in Japan alone
and received a double platinum plague. After six years of intensive touring the world including live
shows in front of 40.000 people in Yokohama and publishing already three albums, they are now
ready to target the european music market.

The single “Star Of The Show” is so far unique. It is a display of the musically development of the
group Voicemail. The lyrics attract both male and female. They embody the feeling of a night at a
club and leaving all the daily stress behind. This is satisfying the european listeners, which like to
dance, but does not appreciate vulgar, insulting or aggressive lyrics.

The instrumental was created by an audio engineer, who lived in Jamaica. Because of that he has a
good understanding of the european music taste and the jamaican expectations. The mixing
engineer is an exclusive producer of the german Jay-Z “Samy Deluxe”. He knows the kind of
baselines expected by the german club audience, edited the baseline according to it and mixed
the vocals. The mastering engineer is residing in germany and works across all genre of music. His
task was to give the song an objective pre-master and the average listener an appealing sound.

The Song will be released on July 1, 2009. It should be acquisition-able over digital sales as
well as over the retail trade. Contact Voicemail at :

Konshens pulled out of Reggae Sumfest

Reggae and Dancehall artiste KONSHENS has reportedly pulled out of the SUMFEST 2009 line up.

The drastic decision was made as a result of agreements made by the artiste and his business partners in Europe regarding the release and promotion of an album done by himself and his older brother Delus.

Apparently he made a commitment from november of last year to come back to Europe to promote the album titled “modern revolution” released by Irievibrations Records from Austria  as soon as the record is released and the season of festivals have begun in Europe.

A very disturbed and almost angry Konshens said that his hands were tied and there was nothing he could do as its not a “money issue”, but moreso an issue of standing by ones word,  “i gave them my word and its an issue involving both me and my brother Delus, so i cant think selfishly even though it will do some harm to my solo carreer, i apologise to anyone that was looking forward to seeing me there, but mi aggo deh round fi a while so no worry unnu self”, he also went on to say that he thinks its going to be one of the best sumfests and regrets not being able to take part, “mi sorry mi aggo miss Tony Braxton star, and mi know tarrus aggo bun it up, especially wid di album about to drop, and it maad” .

Konshens closed by again extending apologies and thanking his growing fanbase for the love they have been showing him.

coverjuneWho is Serani? musician, singer, songwriter, a jack of all trades . Craig Serani Marsh at a young age developed a passion for music and one day decided he and his two life long friends which also shared the same passion would  form a production company called DASECA. DASECA which is the acronyms of the founding members names was formed in 2001, Unfortunately at the time it was only a dream, being ridiculed for paying more attention to music than school serani held fast to his dreams and did not let go. His first major debut was the production of Anger management riddim which was at a stand still for a long period of time, not being known in the industry major artistes were reluctant to record on a riddim of a “NO NAME” producer. As the riddim began to create a buzz in the dancehall industry, artistes began to beat down the door of Daseca productions studio. This very riddim was the rise to fame for Mavado hailing from the gully with “Real McCoy”. With the help of Bounty Killer, Serani now had his foot in the door and refuse to go down without a fight. Focusing more on “FINDING THOSE MELODIES” serani was more into production at the time and took it very seriously.

Serani has co-produced the first two singles on Sean Paul’s platinum album “Trinity,” including ‘We Be Burning,’ which was the first released single. The ‘We be Burning’ track helped Trinity smash a Jamaican record of 107,000 copies sold in the first week.

Serani decided to take his first stab at singing while producing tracks for Mavado adding a falsetto hook to the heartfelt 2006 single “Dying.”  When the song became a hit, Serani took it as a cue to start making his own tracks and, in 2007, his debut single, “Doh,” shot to the top of the Jamaican charts and broke him onto U.S. radio stations such as New York’s Hot 97. Now firmly established as an artist in his own right, he has followed with a string of successful singles including “She Loves Me,” “Study People” and “No Games,” his biggest hit to date. The track, which meshes the pulsing throb of dancehall with an emotive R&B hook, has landed him on radio stations across the U.S. as well as the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart.

”Serani has sold thousands of downloads and ringtones for months, and now No Games has replaced Bob Marley’s anthem, that sells an average of 5,500 a week in downloads on iTunes.

“No Games is actually still gaining in spins across the country,” said Serani’s manager. “This record just won’t go away. Its still getting added to playlists in many states across the country every week so it continues to spread.

Serani is looking beyond the Jamaican market and straight at the world. “I’m a Jamaican artist but I just make music, period,” he says. “I always try to keep that dancehall influence but I don’t need a dancehall beat for my music to be Jamaican and pop at the same time. All I need is my voice. I open my throat and you hear Jamaica shining.

Serani Part 2: Hit Maker or One Hit Wonder?

Due to controversial comments on our last feature of Serani above we here at DHUSA would like to get your input on the comments placed by our viewers, Is Serani a hit maker or a one hit wonder we asked this question. The viewers seem to be stating Serani’s current single  ” No games”  would be his first and last international hit. According to the public his singing ability is in question. Do you think he has what it takes to survive amongst the best in the American pop market?

Twin Of Twins Arrested For Fraud

Twins Of Twins

Just days after their hilarious Trial & Crosses – Stir It Up Vol. 8 comic satire was released to rave reviews, Patrick ‘Curly Lox’ Gaynor and Paul ‘Tu-Lox’ Gaynor (more popularly known as Twin of Twins) have found themselves in hot water as they were arrested and taken into custody yesterday by the Half-Way Tree police – on reasonable suspicion of fraud.

It is being alleged that they took J$50,000 from an unnamed upcoming artiste earlier this year, under the guise that they were able to give him the opportunity to travel to the United States to perform. It is further alleged that they failed to deliver on their promise, and subsequently refused to return the complainant’s money. They are now in custody at the Half-Way-Tree police station awaiting interview/questioning.

The Twins have indicated that the charges are trumped up, politically motivated and also directly related to the recent release of Stir It Up Vol. 8. According to the source, the Twins were threatened that they would be in “deep trouble” if they released Stir It Up Vol. 8.

bis4bobB is for Bob, a collection of Bob Marley’s most beloved songs re-imagined for kids, will be released June 23 by UMe/Island/Tuff Gong. The international musical legend’s eldest son, four-time Grammy winner Ziggy Marley, executive produced the album, which bridges the gap between the timeless Bob Marley and a new generation of kids.

Bob Marley’s music is known around the world for its powerful political and spiritual message that touches people of all ages. With children in mind, Ziggy has transformed
some of his father’s songs for B is for Bob. Eight tracks—“Three Little Birds,” “Redemption Song,” “Bend Down Low,” “Jamming,” “Small Axe,” “Satisfy My Soul,” “Stir It Up” and “High Tide or Low Tide”—remove certain instruments while adding other sounds creates a feeling of hearing these songs for the first time. Meanwhile, four of Bob Marley’s other masterpieces are left untouched: “Could You Be Loved,” “One Love/People Get Ready,” “Lively Up Yourself” and “Wake Up and Live–Pt. 1.”

“Me is a common sense man,” Bob Marley once said. “That mean when me explain things me explain it in a very simple way, that mean if I explain it to a baby the baby will
understand too, you know.” Ziggy continues, “My father’s music spans generations and with B is for Bob we give the youngest their very own Bob Marley record.”

Released in time for summer, the album features fun extras for kids and parents: the CD unlocks bonus online digital content including coloring book pages, a sing-a-long music
video and audio stream previews of Ziggy Marley’s forthcoming Family Time album. Each CD also includes a free one-year subscription to Parents magazine. B is for Bob comes in a

T.I. Catches a Deadly Virus Behind Bars?

tiIncarcerated rapper Clifford “T.I.” Harris’ Arkansas prison has reportedly been hit with an unknown virus outbreak which has resulted in suspended visiting hours.

While the rapper’s health condition is currently unknown, the virus is reportedly spreading throughout the facility.

Authorities say visits with inmates have temporarily been suspended at the federal prison in Forrest City because of an illness outbreak. The prison says visits have been temporarily suspended because of a number of inmates with a “suspected gastrointestinal virus.”

Prison officials say they don’t yet know what’s sickened the inmates, but that they don’t suspect swine flu. A prison official says visiting hours will resume once the virus is contained. (WXVT News)

Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesperson Traci Billingsley has confirmed the virus’ existence.

A number of inmates recently became ill and have been treated at the prison, said Traci Billingsle. The symptoms appear to dissipate within 48 to 72 hours, she said. “Swine flu is not suspected because these all are all gastrointestinal-related,” Billingsley said. Visits were suspended Friday.

They will resume when medical personnel are certain there is no risk of exposure, Billingsley said. The prison in Forrest City is a low-security facility housing male inmates, including rapper T.I., who is serving a yearlong sentence on a weapons charge. (The Morning News)

No information on Tip’s health conditions have been released as of today (June 23).

New Murder Capital of the Caribbean – Trinidad

With a steady rise in violent crime including an alarming increase in homicides, Trinidad and Tobago has overtaken Jamaica as the “murder capital of the Caribbean”.

While homicides increased two percent in Jamaica in 2008, murders were up a staggering 38 percent in Trinidad and Tobago.

Although much of the violence is gang-related, in recent years tourists have increasingly become targets for robbery, sexual assault and murder.

In October 2008, a Swedish couple was chopped to death in their hotel room in Tobago.

Just 10 days later in Tobago, two British females were robbed and sexually assaulted by a bandit who forced his way into their holiday apartment.

Travel warnings
The US and the UK issued travel advisories warning travelers about increasing violence and the failure of police in Tobago to apprehend and prosecute criminals.

“You should be aware that there are high levels of violent crime, especially shootings and kidnappings,” states a travel advisory issued by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office in October 2008. “British nationals have been victims of violent attacks, particularly in Tobago where law enforcement is weak.”

A US travel advisory issued about the same time warns travelers that armed robbers have been trailing tourists as they depart international airports in Trinidad and Tobago.

“Violent crimes, including assault, kidnapping for ransom, sexual assault and murder, have involved foreign residents and tourists (and) incidents have been reported involving armed robbers trailing arriving passengers from the airport and accosting them in remote areas…the perpetrators of many of these crimes have not been arrested.”

Highest crime rates
According to the Economist, the English-speaking Caribbean, which extends from the Bahamas in the north to Trinidad & Tobago in the south, averages 30 murders per 100,000 inhabitants per year, one of the highest rates in the world.

By comparison, the murder rate in both Canada and the UK is about two per 100,000.

With 550 homicides in 2008, Trinidad and Tobago has a rate of about 55 murders per 100,000 making it the most dangerous country in the Caribbean and one of the most dangerous in the world.

The rate of assaults, robbery, kidnapping and rape in Trinidad and Tobago is also among the highest in the world.

According to a report issued by the United States State Department, gang-related homicides and other crimes will continue to increase in Trinidad and Tobago in 2009 and 2010.

Selector Hotta Ball says he is neither ‘gully’ nor ‘gaza’,

vybzk_mainThe selector contacted THE STAR recently because of an experience he had while at Junior Reid’s Lookout Tuesdays, which was being held at The View in St Andrew.

During the ‘new tune’ segment, Hotta Ball, whose real name is Shaun Lennon, said he played a song given to him by someone from the Portmore Empire. While the song was being played, Hotta Ball said it was ‘pulled up’ by another selector, Jiggy Ounce. Afterwards, he was approached by Boom Dandimite who seemed upset that the song was played because it insulted members of the Alliance.

“Little Richie call me and ask what a gwaan ’cause him hear seh Boom Dandimite stab after me,” Hotta Ball said while noting that absolutely nothing happened between them.

“Me nuh deh pon no side, no gaza, no gully. Anybody bring dem song me ago play it,” Hotta Ball declared.

Why do Jamaicans run so fast?

81973351WJ178_Olympics_Day_Filming months before the Olympics and continuing the journey from Beijing and back, the 61-minute documentary is the only non-American film nominated at this year’s American Black Film Festival.

It is one of three films nominated in the documentary category at the festival, which is slated from June 24-27 in Miami Beach, Florida.

Garcia-Guereta strives to find the answer to Jamaican athletes’ speed in the film and in the process, beautifully captures the spirit and zeal of Jamaicans.

The owner of Nice Time Productions, a music label and film production company in Portland, Garcia-Guereta said he fell in love with Jamaica at the tender age of 15 when he heard reggae legend Bob Marley for the first time. His love for his second home and its people drove him to document one of the nation’s greatest achieve-ments – a record 13 Olympic medals, including six golds.

After making an overseas call to director Miquel Galofré, the two followed the sport from July of last year with the National Trials, through to the Olympics while in Jamaica and awaiting the athletes as they returned to the Norman Manley International Airport.

As the athletes wowed audiences each week, the two filmmakers hit the streets, capturing the reaction of the public and interviewing a wide array of persons, including Yendi Phillipps, Lisa Hannah, Big Youth, Etana, Vybz Kartel, LA Lewis, Asafa Powell, Usain Bolt and his family, Shelly-Ann Fraser, Melaine Walker and her family, Shericka Williams, as well as Bruce James and Glen Mills.

“Everybody is asking why Jamaica, as such a little country and reach so far, unlike America where they have their big stadiums and fancy doctors,” he said. “But I think the main answer is from school competitions. We looked at how the athletes started running, how difficult it was for them and how some had to walk to training each day to try to make it into a big track star. How strong the culture in schools is and the competition among students of who is better than who and the readiness to compete.”

Why Do Jamaicans Run So Fast? premiered on Spanish television station Canal (plus) in January.

No Bail for Ninja Man

DANCEHALL entertainer Desmond Ballentine, better known as ‘Ninja Man’, and his son, Jahniel Ballentine, 21, – both facing murder charges – were both denied bail when they appeared in Gun Court section of the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’ Court yesterday.

Clayton Dennis and Seymour Samuels who are facing murder charges in connection with the same case, were also denied bail by Resident Magistrate Valerie Edwards, who said the allegations were too serious to grant them bail.

The four, who are facing charges of murder, conspiracy to murder and illegal possession of a firearm, in connection with the murder of Ricardo ‘Ricky Trooper’ Johnson at his Marl Road home, in Olympic Gardens, Kingston 20, are scheduled to return to court on July 2.

Usain Bolts home burglarized in Jamaica

The home of triple Olympic champion Usain Bolt was burgled on Tuesday night while the Jamaican sprinter was competing in the Czech Republic, police revealed here on Thursday.

The burglars entered the property in the St Andrew area of Kingston between midnight and four o’clock in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Bolt’s half-brother, Sadeke Bolt, was asleep in the house at the time.

The thieves took around 1,000 US dollars’ worth of electrical goods, including a camera, a laptop and mobile phones.

The robbery was reported to the police by Sadeke Bolt and confirmed by Usain’s mother, Jennifer.

“That’s all they took,” she said.

Bolt, the undisputed star of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, was in action in the Czech city of Ostrava on Tuesday and set a year’s best time of 9.77sec in the 100 metres.

US court frees Air Jamaica bomb suspect

A Jamaican-born man accused over a year ago of attempting to carry material used in the making of bombs aboard an Air Jamaica aircraft, walked free without the matter going to trial at a court in Florida on Monday.

Kevin Christopher Brown, 33, was released from jail after his lead counsel and fellow Jamaican Wayne Golding argued successfully before a judge at a public hearing in the Federal Court, Middle District of Florida in Orlando that he had not committed the offence for which he was accused and that he had spent a long time in prison awaiting trial, which was unfair to him.

“It was based on an unopposed motion that we filed for his release,” Golding told the Observer in an exclusive interview yesterday.

Brown was arrested at Orlando International Airport in Florida on April 1 last year for attempting to carry bomb components aboard Air Jamaica’s flight 80 from Orlando to Montego Bay.

Transportation Security Administration officers held onto him after they said he was acting suspiciously.

Brown, an American citizen, packed flammable and explosive nitro-methane in his luggage before they were detected by airport security.

“He is actually out on bond, but the case is closed. We have reached a stage where it will be resolved and all is left is for some paperwork to be completed,” Golding said. “The matter was scheduled for trial on June 30, but it has since been determined by experts on both sides that Mr Brown never intended to blow up the plane. It was an overreaction on the part of the authorities, but I can’t say that I blame homeland security for responding the way that they did, what with all the terrorist activities going on these days. “After the prosecution went through the items, they came to the same conclusion as us, that he was not guilty of what he was accused of,” Golding said. Brown spent 14 months in jail awaiting trial of possession of explosive devices.

He was denied bail due to what Magistrate Karla Spaulding said then was his possession of the explosive items, evidence that he was admitted to a Veterans Affairs hospital for psychiatric treatment and his lack of residential and financial connections to Florida. Golding, who appeared in the matter with American lawyer Tim McClain, said that the items that Brown possessed were not explosives that could have put the lives of the passengers at risk.

“The government’s attorneys said that they could not prove the case. What it might come down to is he could face a misdemeanour charge, like unauthorised entry onto airport property with an item that could be a cigarette lighter or matches. The intent was not there,” Golding said.

Brown is now at an undisclosed location in the USA and is trying to get his life back on track, his lawyer said.
“We don’t want to disclose his location, but he is free, moving about and grateful for all the support that he got. We are extremely grateful that this is over. It’s been a 14-month nightmare for all those involved. He has been through a lot. What his eyes have seen, our brains can never comprehend. His mother was murdered in Jamaica, he served the military, but he was not yet a US citizen, so he will not get certain benefits.

“He has a strong family unit in Jamaica that has stood by him, in particular, his adopted mom, Ms Rodney in Kingston. She was the impetus in what we consider a successful conclusion to this matter,” Golding said.

Golding, in the meantime, is warning Jamaicans to be careful when they travel overseas, as they were not always clear on procedures. “I travel to Jamaica all the time and see people who could end up the same way like Mr Brown. They carry simple items, like some agricultural stuff, that could get them in trouble without them knowing,” Golding said.
