It’s. It’s New Seraaani. R Six Riddim + “Skip To My Luu”

Serani’s moment in New York was summer 2008, with “Doh,” “No Games” and “She Loves Me” all on constant rotation on both pirate stations and Hot97, and he’s been trying to get an album filled with that same music out for a while now. Hopefully, that will still happen, but for everyone who’s already ready for some new Serani/Daseca emotional dancehall, here is Serani’s version on Daseca’s new R Six riddim and a random joint that also has dancer-turned-deejay, best named Ding Dong. Both are absurdly upbeat and perfect for the doggy days of summer.

Serani: “I Don’t Say I Love You”

The First Rasta (Short Film)

Leonard Percival Howell (June 16, 1898 – 1981) was a Jamaican religious figure. He was one of the first preachers of the Rastafari movement (along with Joseph Hibbert, Archibald Dunkley, and Robert Hinds), and is sometimes known as “The First Rasta.”

Born in May Crawle River, Jamaica, Howell left the country as a youth and returned in 1932. He began preaching in 1933 about what he considered the symbolic portent for the African diaspora—the crowning of Ras Tafari Makonnen as Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia. His preaching asserted that Haile Selassie was the “Messiah returned to earth.” Although this resulted in him being arrested, tried for sedition and imprisoned for two years, the Rastafari movement grew. [1]

Over the following years, Howell came into conflict with all the establishment authorities in Jamaica: the planters, the trade unions, established churches, police and colonial authorities. Nevertheless, this movement prospered, and today the Rastafari faith exists worldwide.

Leonard Howell died in Kingston, Jamaica.

Usain Bolt on September Issue of Sports Illustrated

On the Cover: Usain Bolt, Track and Field, Jamaica

His performances are unthinkable, but also seemingly self-evident. Usain Bolt is a sprinter, after all; his work is timed to the thousandth of a second. Within five days last week at the world track and field championships in Berlin—a deeply significant site in the sport’s history—Bolt crushed his own year-old world records while winning both the 100 and 200 meters. The numbers speak in track’s most eloquent tongue.

Live Nation Cancels Buju Banton shows

By Julie Bolcer

Concert promoter Live Nation cancelled a series of upcoming shows by Jamaican dancehall star Buju Banton (pictured) on Thursday after gay rights activists pressured the company to drop the antigay performer through an e-mail campaign.

Banton was scheduled to perform in October at House of Blues venues in Chicago, Las Vegas, Dallas, and Houston, among other dates and locations. However, last week, activists began contacting the Beverly Hills-based Live Nation to express their dismay because of his violent antigay lyrics.

Live Nation announced plainly that the concerts by Banton were cancelled, and that refunds would be available to ticket holders.

The secret to the success of Tarrus Riley, believe it or not, is quite simple – “when preparation meets opportunity”, stated a self-assured Riley. “I’ve been surrounded by music all my life. My father is a singer and my mother is a bathroom singer”, he explains with a chuckle. “Because I can’t change the world, I sing for the people – this is the contribution I can make and after I make a song; it isn’t even mine anymore; it belongs to the people.”

This artiste has been steadfast in his mission to represent the poor and oppressed, using sharp lyrics to confront political injustices and bring the issues of the people to the forefront. In the process, he has raised the quality of performance standards and lyrical content for the industry, through the release of 13 albums, over 1000 singles and appearances on over 100 albums in the last 14 years.

Anthony B’s musical journey started in the church, back when he was still called Keith Anthony Blair in Clark’s Town, Trelawney. In this part of rural Jamaica, Anthony B was immersed in the thunderous chants and rhythms of Revivalism and the Seventh Day Adventist church where he honed his soon-to-be signature vocals. In his formative years, the artiste also cleaved to the music of Otis Redding and the incomparable Peter Tosh.

Mavado’s Japan Tour is a major success

Get the Flash Player to see the wordTube Media Player.

A crowd the size of Reggae Sumfest came out to the AICHI Reggae Breeze Festival yesterday to see Mavado Saturday night. Thousands and thousands of Japanese Reggae and Dancehall fans flocked to the beach for what can only be described as a cross between Sumfest and Fully Loaded.

Thousands of miles away from home, Jamaican culture was alive and kicking as sound systems pumped out everything from Garnet Silk to Bounty Killer, surrounded by stalls selling Jerk chicken and Ital stew! Japanese Dancehall acts and selectors warmed up the crowd but when Mavado hit the stage the energy level was cosmic. The huge crowd hung on Mavado’s every word and went ballistic from start to finish.

“Its a great feeling to travel so far from Jamaica and be shown so much love from another country,” said a tired Mavado after giving his all at the show. “It shows the power of our music and culture and we need to keep using it and representing it positively. I’m having a great experience in Japan and will definitely be back soon.”
Anger Management Band did another fine job, as well as Flexxx and Chase Cross who were both shown a lot of love from the sea of fans in attendance when called on stage by Gully God.

The final leg of the Reggae Breeze Mavado Tour stops in Kumamoto tonight for the Kyushu Music Festival that is sure to round off the trip on an extreme high.

Jamaica achieves best-ever World Championship performance

Regardless of the performance of Jamaica’s women in today’s 4x400m relay final, the country has already created World Athletics Championship history.

Helsinki, Finland, in 1983 was where it all started when Bert Cameron pocketed gold in the men’s 400m, running an impressive 45.05 seconds. The outstanding Merlene Ottey took the baton and collected back-to-back 200m gold medals in 1993 and 1995.

After that, the country experienced a drought of individual gold medals until Trecia Smith’s triple jump gold in 2005.

Jamaican superstar Veronica Campbell-Brown added the 100m title in Osaka, Japan, in 2007.

Team Jamaica did, however, win a gold medal in the women’s 4x100m in 1991.

The 2001 women’s 4x400m relay team finished second but was awarded the gold medal after the United States team was disqualified.

Before this awesome performance, Jamaica had won overall seven gold, 29 silver and 30 bronze medals at the World Athletics Championships but no more than a single gold came at any one meet.

The country’s best medal haul came in Osaka, Japan, in 2007, where athletes took home one gold, six silver and three bronze medals.

With one day left in the 2009 Championships, Team Jamaica has already grabbed 12 medals, seven gold, three silver and two bronze.

But even more impressive was the performances in victory.

It’s the first time Team Jamaica has grabbed the men’s 100m and 200m, women’s 400m and 100m hurdles, along with the men’s 4x100m relay.

It is a performance which has been hailed by Prime Minister Bruce Golding.

“The performance of our athletes at the Berlin games and the victories they have brought to our country almost on a daily basis confirm that this country is destined for greatness.

“We are blessed, our people are blessed and we now need to translate this energy, this determination, discipline and drive into all spheres of our lives,” Golding said.

According to Golding, “The athletes have outdone themselves, bringing with them a nation that is bursting with pride and joy, beyond words.”

Serani’s 2nd single makes Billboard Top 100

Multi-talented Alliance member Serani has scored his second successive Billboard hit with “She Loves Me,” the second single from his upcoming album.

Debuting this week at number 82 on the Billboard Hot Hip Hop/R&B Chart, She Loves Me is in heavy rotation on the station that breaks Dancehall records in the US – New York’s HOT 97, as well as at other urban and crossover formats across the country as it begins to pick up speed.
“Its a great time for Jamaica right now,” said Serani. “Our athletes are on top the world and we’re continuing to make huge strides like Usain with our music! 2009 has been a great year for me and for Jamaican music, now I am just readying up to drop the album and try to move some units!”
The video for She Loves Me will be shot in New York over the next two weeks which will propel the song further into the realms of mainstream America. Serani, who self-produced the song, also has a hot track bubbling on US radio with rapper Webstar.
Serani continues his hectic schedule this Sunday inside Club Mansion on Miami’s party capital – South Beach. He is also slated to appear on Miami’s POWER 96 FM’s Beach House show next Saturday the 29th at the Deauville beach resort on Miami Beach, alongside T Pain, Flo Rida, Kid Cudi, Trick Daddy, Trina, Jagged Edge and more. Serani will be hitting New York Friday September 4th with fellow Alliance members Bounty Killer and Mavado for HOT 97’s On Da Reggae Tip at the Hammerstein Ballroom.

Alliance Provides Clarity to ‘Beenie Man’

In light of Beenie Man’s recent comments regarding his “invitation” for the Alliance to perform at his show this Saturday we just wanted to balance a couple of issues…..

Beenie himself came to me at Champions in Action and asked me if the artists would be available for his show,” said Alliance management’s Julian Jones-Griffith. “I’m not sure why he is saying he sent someone to ask me when he himself came to me. And genuinely every artist will be off the island this weekend. I’m in Japan right now with Mavado, Killer and Serani will also be away. A member of Beenie’s promotional team contacted my office a couple of months ago asking if Serani would be available but he was already booked in advance. There was no request for Killer or Mavado back then and when Beenie asked me on Saturday they were already contracted for overseas engagements. So for him to say we ‘refused’ his invitation to unity is putting a negative spin on the situation to say the least.”

Cynics are saying Beenie is just using this ploy as part of the intense damage control media campaign both he and Vybz Kartel have undertaken since they were unceremniously booed at Champions in Action. Beenie Man, who did a song called “Gaza mi Seh,” declared himself the Gaza Emperor and counteracted Mavado’s Mockingbird is now insisting he isnt saying Gully or Gaza he’s saying “Jamaica” and calling for unity. Thats an admirable thing to do, but why the sudden change of heart……in the run-up to his show?

And as for the accusation that the Alliance carried people to Champions to boo Beenie is laughable and not worth another word. They got booed at one stage show and have spent the days since then having their publicists running around like headless chickens with denials, accusations and distractions. Its not that big of a deal but they are only damaging themselves by drawing it out for days like this.

The Alliance sends its congratulations to Usain Bolt, Shely Anne Fraser, Brigitte Foster-Hylton and the rest of the Jamaican athletes that have captured the imagination of the world with their supreme performances in Berlin. And all the best to Beenie with his show.

J. Period & K’naan – The Messangers (Bob Dylan & Bob Marley tribute)

Deejay and producer J. Period and Somali emcee K’naan are joining forces for The Messengers, a remix project paying tribute to musical icons Fela Kuti, Bob Marley and Bob Dylan.

The project, which is a mix of Afro-Beat, Reggae, Ska, Folk Music, Rock and Hip Hop, remixes the music of the three artists in an effort to continue conveying their messages. K’naan is fresh off of his sophomore release, Troubadour [click to read], which debuted at #32 on Billboard’s top 200. J. Period has done numerous remix projects – one of which was with Q-Tip – yielding over 600,000 downloads. In addition, J. Period has worked with Mary J. Blige, The Roots, Kanye West and many other artists.

“This project is really special to me,” says K’naan. “Not the product of ego but of passion. Far from a marketing tool, it is an honest musical offering. Nothing gives a better window into the root and concept of my own sound than The Messengers.”

“A lot of people say Hip Hop is in a stagnant place, but I see few actually doing something about it,” says J.Period. “I love the The Messengers because the concept is completely unique, but still true to the original spirit of Hip Hop: combining the best elements from everywhere to create something fresh, to make a new statement. Fela, Marley and Dylan proved that when great music meets a powerful message, the result lives forever. I hope K’naan and I have done their legacies justice with this project.”

The Messengers will be released in five parts over the course of five weeks, begging with an installment consisting of one remix of Fela , Marley, and Dylan each. The first installment will be released today (August 18). A new release will follow every Tuesday in September, beginning with a tribute to Fela Kuti (September 1), Bob Marley (September 8), Bob Dylan (September 15), and finally The Messangers in its entirety plus bonus tracks on September 22.

J.Period x K’Naan: “Let’s Start (Fela Kuti Tribute)”

J.Period x K’Naan: “Belly Full (Bob Marley Tribute)” feat. Kardinal Offishall, General Steele, Baja

J.Period x K’Naan: “Relationships Lay (Bob Dylan Tribute)”

Other artists involved in The Messengers project are M1 of Dead Prez, Kardinal Offishall, Baja of Dry Eye Crew, Steele of Smf’N’Wessun, Zumbi of Zion I, Netic the Rebel of Game Rebellion, bassist Brian Satz, and produced DJ Preservation.

Busy Signal x Poirier x Natalie Storm x Lots of Women

This blend started out with the Natalie Storm 45 “God Bless Me” on the Cheez Trix riddim—which, if you’ve been reading the blogs you know was produced by Nats herself. A move out of the deejay booth and behind the boards seems like a natural step for her since the whole Badda Badda Gals modus toppa-randi is about the daughters doing it for themselves. It also just happens to be one of the nicest dancehall beats we’ve heard in a while, capturing the polyrhythmic crack of ’90s dancehall without actually being a thief-ed and recycled version of a ’90s classic. Nat’s version might be the best but like any good riddim, the Cheez Trix invites a ton of strong versions, not surprisingly showcasing some of the top non-badda badda affiliated female DJs, ie Macka Diamond and newcomer Tiki.

We notice that another new juggling had an unusually high estrogen quotient. That riddim is called Unstoppable and it comes from TJ Records. Linton “TJ” White is the same dude who’s almost single handedly kept the dancehall scene alive with Bembe Thursdays and also put out the Showtime throwback riddim called Unfinished Business. That run alone spawned the two biggest crossovers of the past year or two—Serani’s “No Games” and Mavado’s “So Special”—so if you are in any way living off this reggae business, you owe the man a round of applause. Until now he hadn’t produced a follow up that even came close to duplicating the impact of Unfinished Business but that situation may have changed with Unstoppable.

It would have been perfect if it wasn’t for for two meddling tunes from Deejay stalwart Busy Signal in the same tempo. The remix came straight from Ghis (Poirier—not to be confused with Giz “77Klash” Burrowes).

Usain Bolt 200m World Record 19.19!

Get the Flash Player to see the wordTube Media Player.

Usain Bolt’s extraordinary world championships continued as he broke his own 200m world record, running in a time of 19.19sec that slashed 0.11sec off the time he set in Beijing last year. Earlier this week he ran a time of 9.58sec to break his own 100m world record by exactly the same margin.

“I can definitely say I didn’t expect that because I was a little bit tired,” Bolt said after the race. “I said ‘Let’s try because people are really looking out for this’. I said ‘It won’t hurt to try’. So I tried really hard and now I’m really tired.

“Maybe next time I should just run the 200m or the 100m alone,” he added. “My form was going backwards. I wasn’t running upright. It wasn’t a good race but it was a fast one.”

Bolt was in relaxed mood before the race, showing off to the cameras and wearing a t-shirt bearing the phrase “Ich Bin Ein Berlino”, in reference to Berlino the bear, the event’s mascot. After one false start, Bolt got off the blocks quickly and opened up an easy, early lead. He had time, towards the end of the race, to appear to check the stadium clock before he crossed the finish line. His nearest competitor was Alonso Edward, who finished with a time of 19.81sec while the American Wallace Spearmon finished third with 19.85sec.

Spragga Benz -Shotta Culture

Get the Flash Player to see the wordTube Media Player.

A documentary and an album are only a couple things Spragga Benz has on his agenda after a lengthy United States tour.

Spragga recently wrapped up the ‘Blazed And Confused’ tour, which he did with Snoop Dogg, Slightly Stoopid and Stephen Marley. During the tour they visited 25 cities.

“We did mostly outdoor shows. It was great, probably the best tour I have been on. Everything went well,” said Spragga. He said he visited places for the first time where people were not familiar with reggae or dancehall.

With the tour aside, his focus is now on a documentary about his life, which will tentatively be called Shotta Culture. It will look at his life, musical career , relationships, children and his deceased son, Carlton Grant Jr.

“It’s a 90-minute documentary and I will be candidly talking about everything about Jamaica – gang violence, politics. We nah glamourise it but we a speak pon all these things,” he said.

Spragga’s friends and family will also be in the documentary, talking about him. It will have his family members, Buju Banton, Stephen Marley, friends from Arrows Recording Studio, his friends from La Benz and Ricky Villa, who died some 10 years ago, but Spragga found an old footage of him talking about their friendship and Spragga’s career.

There will also be footage from some of his shows and the recent Life Fest, which was dedicated to the Carlyle Foundation set up in his son’s honour.

Spragga said the documentary was scheduled for release in October. However, he said he wanted to include the December 16 trial over his son’s death in the documentary. So, he would prefer if the release date was rescheduled to February next year.

“We want to include the trial. We want to put the full story in it. Show seh the law do its job, if it do it job,” Spragga said.

However, the October release of his album is already set, as it is almost complete. The songs have been recorded but some of them are still being mixed. It features artistes such as Wayne Wonder, Marcia Griffiths, Nas, Stephen Marley, Sizzla, Jah Cure and Queen Ifrica.

“I been working on that for a while now but I wasn’t rushing it. We neva did a mek a dancehall album. It is reggae/dancehall-based with some dub sound but with a new twist to it,” Spragga said, while noting that the album is being produced by him and popular hip-hop producer Salaam Remi.

In addition, Spragga said he wants to shoot videos for all the songs on the album, so that they can be a part of the documentary.

`I am blessed to be a part of Reggae music….it is powerful because it comes from a powerful culture,` says Simon Tse, co-founding member of Mighty Crown. `The Jamaican culture has taught me so much that I travel the world spreading it`s vibes and incorporate it into my work.`

Get the Flash Player to see the wordTube Media Player.

Rick Ross, the artiste who shot to stardom after the release of his 2006 album, Port of Miami and who dominated the charts with songs like Push it and Hustling is all set to make his debut appearance in Jamaica this summer. As part of the star-studded line-up planned for Lime Beenie Man Sizzle to be held at the National Stadium on Saturday, Rick Ross is expected to deliver a superb showing belting out his major hits.

According to Beenie Man, he is pulling out all the stops to ensure that fans walk away from this show thinking it was the best one they’ve ever been to.

“This year I’m celebrating 30 years in the music. I am putting my all into this show because it is for my fans who have supported me over the years. I have put together a solid line-up that I believe the fans will like,” Beenie said.

“Rick Ross is one of the big names in rap music, he has never performed in Jamaica so having him as part of my show is a big deal,” he added.

Beenie Man also disclosed that the plans for the show were underway and everything was going well.

Rick Ross has collaborated with several major players in the music business including Nelly, T-Pain, Nas and John Legend. He is looking forward to coming to Jamaica and supporting Beenie Man’s annual event.

Ross is also planning to release his fourth studio album entitled Teflon Don which has been confirmed on some of his websites. It is set to be released in early 2010. He is also working on a collaboration with the Triple C’s entitled Custom Cars and Cycles which is set to be released in 2010.

Vybz Kartel “Lightning Bolt”

Jamaican Usain Bolt set a world record for the 100-meter dash on Sunday, speeding to the finish in an unprecedented and nigh absurd 9.58 seconds—which inspired Vybz Kartel to immediately hit the studio and memorialize the freakish sprinter. The song is only two minutes long so it feels nearly as quick as Bolt’s record, but it’s notable that Vybz sounds audibly STOKED, singing with a glorious wail and proudly repping the Jamaican flag. The Times writes, “Jamaica is the cradle of sprinting now, and all those curious to know just how fast Bolt might have gone if he had not stopped trying 20 meters before the finish in Beijing now have a much clearer answer. Assuming ratification, the time to beat is 9.58 seconds. And for now, only one man appears capable of playing this game.” Bolt also dragged his feet at the start of this one. Vybz puts it more succinctly: “The fastest man in the history of the worrllllllldddddd!”
