Singer/songwriter, Tarrus Riley, tackles the rampant issue of gun violence in his third official release Living The Life Of A Gun, from his latest studio LP Contagious.

The lead single on the 18-track compilation, Living The Life of A Gun sees Riley masterfully stepping aside from his characteristic lover’s persona to deliver an infectious track laden with clever puns and weaved with stark realities. He juxtaposes his name to that of the similarly titled automatic weapon – the Taurus – giving the gun a poignant voice to detail its role in the rising scourge of violence in today’s society.

tarrus-riley“Me strike fear inna yu heart, All sorts of people a walk with me and nuh fraid fi pop me off. When me seh blow! See it deh, everything dead off in a second… look how much trouble I cause…”

Riley’s expressive lyrics on the Dean ‘Cannon’ Fraser-produced track rings an all-too-familiar tone of violence pursued in the name of war and plunder or similarly youths spewing shots in retaliation to social and economic frustration, ferocious accounts that hit close to home and witnessed daily by newspaper headlines and TV reports.

“I chose this song to be released as my next single because of its crucial anti-arms message and direct relevance to humanity today. I wrote it from the gun’s point of view and who better to tell the story of the gun than the man who bears its namesake? This Tarrus, however, is strictly against violence and asks, ‘What dem make gun for? Me no see no good whey it do round yah’. Guns wreak destruction and as it stands, even the man who makes the gun is afraid of the gun. Nobody wants to die so let’s put the guns to rest,” Tarrus declared.

A firm believer that positivity should always be spread through music, Riley hopes to impact change with his latest release. “Tarrus is not an artiste who will just give you solely love songs, we have to talk about ‘real’ things as well, which is why we sing Start Anew, Good Girl Gone Bad and Living TheLife Of A Gun. Domestic violence, drug abuse and gun violence are real offences in our society and as artistes we need to reinforce these reality-themed messages and help inspire change,” says the singer.

With artistes now being called upon to be more creative and wholesome in their lyrics, Riley’s diversity and conscientiousness sets him standards apart. “I am on a mission with my music. I always deliver positivity and even more so as we approach the New Year, I want to impress the message of love and peace – love is lovely and war is ugly,” he declared.

With the track gaining steady ground on local and international playlists, Tarrus prepares to shoot the video for the single this weekend with director Gareth Cobran (Konshens, Demarco, Morgan Heritage) at the famed Rebel T headquarters.

“I am looking forward to the shoot this weekend. Gareth and I have worked on projects before so there is great synergy there. The video will also have special cameos by some of the premiers in reggae and dancehall music including the legendary Joe Lickshot who does the introduction for the track. The treatment for the video is impressive and fans will see a different side to Tarrus Riley,” says the singer.

In addition to working on his new video, Riley is buzzing internationally and prepares to end a successful year with several dates in the Caribbean as well as finalising preparations for the Europe leg of his ‘Contagious’ tour which will kick off in January 2010. Earlier this year, Riley and his Blak Soil band toured multiple cities across the US and Canada earning rave reviews on his new album, talent, passion, and originality from publications such as Jet, Essence, The New York Times and many others.

It was a historic night and historic moment in Atlanta, Georgia at the Georgia World Congress Center. Not only was it the first major event presented by the newly formed Centric (A network created by Viacom combining BET J and VH1 Soul), not only did the show do tributes to such legends like Chaka Khan, Charlie Wilson, L.A. Reid and the late great Michael Jackson, not only is this the first staging, after a tow year hiatus of the annual event, but this was the first time that the prestigious award ceremony had included the category of best Reggae artist. As a matter of fact the award for Best Reggae Artist was the first award given out.

The nominees for this category were strong contenders. Tarrus Riley a winner of such awards as album of the year, song of the year and new artist of the year in other award ceremonies. Tarrus Riley, son of legendary singer Jimmy Riley and now the protégé of legendary saxophonist and producer Dean Fraser, has been seen by many as a wonderful addition to Reggae music through his music, voice, lyrics and performances. Ziggy Marley needs no introduction; he is an international superstar that has been providing quality Reggae music and performances for decades, as the eldest son of the King of Reggae music Bob Marley he has won probably every prestigious award that a musician can win. Movado is currently one of the most popular artists in the Dancehalls of Jamaica and around the world, the Dancehall artist has crossover and underground hits that have been chart toppers for the past few years. Serani has produced and been a musician on many major hits; recently he became a vocal artist and has enjoyed several hits as a vocalist. The Wolmer’s alum currently enjoys crossover success with two of his hits and has recently dropped an album “No Games”.

The tweets and social media messages were flying all over the internet naming the nominee though that walked away with the prize. He is actually another Wolmer’s alum, the multiplatinum selling artist, Sean Paul! Sean Paul over the past seven years has easily become one of the most recognizable Jamaican artists worldwide scoring hit after hit in the mainstream landscape. Paul showed his appreciation on winning such a prestigious award and said it was a good thing for Reggae to be recognized, something that is long overdue. His latest album “Imperial Blaze” is his most successful international effort to date, charting number one in several countries around the world. He has had a very successful tour in different countries and continues to be an ambassador for Jamaican music. Paul has stayed committed also to using Jamaican producers who are very relevant. The next single off of his album will be “Hold My Hand” featuring Keri Hilson who was also nominated for three awards.

The Soul Train Music Awards was a star studded event and well produced. Production was done by Sunseeker Media. A Haitian American producer from Sunseeker was the show producer of the 2009 Soul Train Awards Red Carpet Show. Junia Joseph, the producer, ran a tight ship as she skillfully executed this extremely intricate and formidable task. When asked about the inaugural inclusion of the Best Reggae Artists Category Joseph said that, “I feel that the inclusion of the Best Reggae Artist category in the 2009 Soul Train Awards speaks to the influence of Caribbean music and culture in the world of mainstream music and culture. Credit must also be given in large part to Centric and its programming, which in its prior form always maintained a healthy dose of Caribbean rich programming content.”

Congratulations to Sean Paul and all the nominees for the Reggae and other Categories of the Centric Presents: Soul Train Awards 2009. It is a positive that the long overdue recognition is being given to Reggae music; it opens opportunities and doors for the Caribbean culture. The taping of this historic occasion will be aired on Centric on November 29 2009 it will show performances by Toni Braxton, Trey Songz, Erykah Badu, Robin Thicke, Fantasia, Ryan Leslie, Raheem DeVaughn, Karyn White, Boyz II Men, Ledisi, Chico Debarge, Angie Stone, Brian McKnight, Ginuwine, Melanie Fiona, and Johnny Gill. The broadcast will be hosted by Academy Award-nominated actors Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson. So until next time LOVE, HAPPINESS and SOUL!

While die-hard Sting fans do all the possible permutations and combinations for a clash between Vybz Kartel and Bounty Killer and its outcome on December 26, Isaiah Laing is juggling figures as feverishly as a deejay preparing for the big night.

Sponsorship woes hit Sting 2K9

Layout1_1_PZDMRStingPicAMWhile die-hard Sting fans do all the possible permutations and combinations for a clash between Vybz Kartel and Bounty Killer and its outcome on December 26, Isaiah Laing is juggling figures as feverishly as a deejay preparing for the big night.

Laing, head of Sting organisers, Supreme Promotions, has said there is a $10 million shortfall in the budget

, which he is trying to constrain under last year’s production figure of about $30 million. With no major sponsor on board this year, he was hoping for the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) to inject some cash.

The sponsorship hoped for has not found substance and, with less than a month to go to Sting 2K9, Laing looks back to earlier days of putting on the show, saying “I have lost so many houses to the banks, but the half has never been told”. He said that has happened more than four times.

Major costs

Among the major costs for putting on Sting, which Laing said pulled in over 25,000 people to Jam World, St Catherine, last year, is security. “The stage Sting is at you have to run big bucks to do it properly. Last year security cost us almost $2 million. That is nothing to ensure the security of our patrons,” he said. Apart from a stampede at about 3 a.m., which Laing said was due to pickpockets, the concert was peaceful, even with a highly charged clash between Vybz Kartel and Mavado.

There is also a heavy advertising cost of between $4 million to $5 million and Laing said although the event is established he leaves nothing to chance and is always looking for new markets.

Annual crowd

It is not the first time Sting has sought sponsorship from the JTB, the first submission made in about 1992, and last previous attempt about five years ago. “I can tell them that Sting brings more visitors than any other show,” Laing said, pointing to a number of Jamaicans abroad actually booking their holidays around the concert. There is also an annual charter flight from Bermuda, which will carry in about 280 persons this year, and persons from as far as Australia, Europe and Japan.

Even at this late stage, he said, he is not giving up, saying “I would love to get even US$100,000 from them”.

There is, of course, the matter of Sting’s gritty image, and Laing said “the image can be changed”.

However, “every time we do clash we get a nice turnout and we see a profit”. When The Sunday Gleaner asked if he would put on Sting without a clash, if that was a sponsorship condition, Laing said “if they are giving me the kind of money they are giving to the other festivals, fine”.

This year’s Jamaica Jazz and Blues got US$500,000 in sponsorship from the JTB, but was turned down for similar support in its 2010 staging.

The supporters

“I would go into the show making a profit,” Laing said, adding that he could then do things that he knows would bring out the crowd. “Right now it’s the only viable way,” he said of the clashing or ‘face-off’. “It gets intense sometimes but I don’t believe people have to take it literally.”

He puts his sponsorship plight in the wider social context. Laing said “these are the things, when I look at it, that help to make the crime rate so high. We have two Jamaicas. We have Jamaica up the top and Jamaica down the bottom. How I’m seeing it, it’s either you’re rich or you are poor”.

“I would put myself in the poor category. This show is coming from way back when it is poor people who supported it. I can’t put it out of their reach,” Laing said, adding that by and large they cannot afford to go out of Kingston

for major music events and he tries to keep the price affordable.

He is reluctant, though, to add a sponsor’s name to the show’s title again. “I don’t want to give up my title again. When you have a title sponsor and they leave it is like a vacuum. Magnum came and left, Guinness came and left,” Laing said.

“It is going to be just Sting.”

Each artist in the industry has a story to tell. The triumphs and the challenges. This holds true for the mega international recording artist Sean Paul. Late last week, Sean Paul’s Twitter followers would have seen his tirade directed at a particularly persistent follower, who told him “don’t fabricate street cred … be real” (among other things), apparently based on statements made by Sean Paul during a recent television interview on the Mo’Nique Show. Sean Paul was clearly not amused, and in an exclusive follow-up interview with Nikki-Z, he spoke further about people constantly styling him as UPT (uptown) – born with a gold spoon in his mouth.

MP3: Busy Signal, “Nuh Fraid of Them”

busydhusa

Busy’s take on Drake’s all-star monster “Forever” cites many vessels of technology, but mostly it just got us wondering who was the first person to namedrop Twitter in a song. Pretty sure Nore was early in the cut with his verse on Cassie’s “Must Be Love” remix in first quarter ‘09 (She hit me on Twitter/then I gave her my email/Told her that my love come free/Just like Gmail—a verse that we’re almost positive happened in real life). Surely Puff has mentioned it somewhere, or has an archived verse of Biggie shouting it out that he plans to release on another “duet” album in 2012. But Busy’s Twitter check is the best thus far, coming amidst a barrage of brags til the beat drops out and he goes Whoa, as if he can’t believe he’s even uttered its consonants. The real wild thing about this is that he released this song via his Twitter, which further proves our theory that life in the internet is just an elaborate labyrinth made of mirrors—and if we take a wrong turn we will be eaten by a super-scary fanged clown in giant rubber shoes. Then our bones will get ground up and made into cat food. Shout to Poquito and Mochipet back home.
