Gay Rights Group Angry Over Buju Banton’s Grammy Nomination

dhusabuju Gay Rights Group Angry Over Buju Bantons Grammy Nomination

Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) leaders in America have urged musicians to sign a new petition protesting reggae star Buju Banton’s Grammy Award nomination.

The advocacy organization is also calling on Recording Academy members not to support the nomination of Banton’s Rasta Got Soul album in the Best Reggae Album category.

GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios says, “Reggae singer Buju Banton’s anti-gay lyrics and the climate of hatred they create are a threat to the safety of gay and transgender people everywhere. In a climate of increased anti-gay violence in America and Banton’s home country of Jamaica, it is deeply disappointing that the Recording Academy would choose to laud the work of a singer who has advocated violence against the gay community.”

The petition and anti-Grammy campaign is the latest in the battle between gay rights groups and Banton, who was forced to reschedule a series of U.S. shows earlier this year when GLAAD official persuaded many venues to ban

Felix: Eminem never called for death against gay people. He never called for *genocide*. How can you not see why people take that seriously? Do you not understand that in every country in the world–but even worse in Jamaica–gay people are hunted down and beaten/shot/killed/strangled to death? By straight people? Like you and buju? Or do you just not care?

Despite what the Grammy’s did…the protests against buju have established that no international company, and many local nightclubs, will want nothing to do with a performer who has called for death to gays. I know that local Jamaican musicians are watching and learning that lesson.

When buju is man enough to renounce violence against gay people, and to apologize for what he’s done…then gay people will forgive and forget. (And just so you know, he’s performed the song in public as recently as 2006…and it is available easily all over the internet)

je ne comprend pas pourkoi ils s’acharnent sur buju se n’ai pas que je suis d’accor pour ses propos mais il y a un grand nombre d’artiste qui chante des propos homophobes!!

    • Gay Human Rights

Okay, Jeanis, cool…who else should we be protesting? We’ll do it! Straight people are hunting down and killing god’s gay-lesbian-transgender children, and it is time to stop.

Despite what the world may think. No one is hunting down and killing gay people in Jamaica that is bullshit. I visit Jamaica and went to a popular club called Quad and a bunch of lesbian was dance with each other no one harmed them. (and this in not a gay club). Gay people are murdered in America,England all over the world. The cases in Jamaica are not anymore than any of these countries.Yes we uphold or laws against this practice but no is hunting down and killing gays..people have better things to worry about than to worry about batty man….

i agree with Felix, im in full support of people living their own lives i dont caere if u are gay or not, but buju song years and years old, nuff dancehall artsits have san worse than him all about vulgar sex and killing nonstop but nobody quarreling about that, and also if the gays are so mad about the lyrics still then they cud as well bitch about every dancehall artsit as well considering they all say the same thing over and over again. dancehall is going to shit actually now that i think abou tit…different topic tho

I just decided to give for Haiti’s orphans. I suggest that everyone donate to those scarred by Haiti’s disaster as well.

      Yo Felix:

Wrong. I don’t care what sh*t buju or Capleton spew in Jamaica. They can talk about whatever hatred they want. And read some more of buju and capleton’s lyrics if you don’t think they’re calling for my death. Hang “my mind” with a long rope? Please.

BUT if someone calls for my death, they can’t come to my city, state, or country without dealing with me. Not coming into your culture–telling you to keep it out of mine.

Also, there are plenty of gay Jamaicans, so stop saying “we”. The real victims here are the god’s gay-lesbian children in your nation who are forced to live among those who hate them with such fire in their hearts.
