Q&A: Daddy & Hypa ‘Remix Gods Of The New Era’

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

D&H 10 questions (Jamaican lingo)

1. Tell People who Daddy and Hypa is?

Daddy and Hypa aka D&H Remix aka D&H!!! We are 2 french sound engineers, producers, Djs and of course remix makerz. We are working with a lot of reggae/dancehall artists, labels and Djs from all around the world. We also are members of the Shadyville Caribbeans Djs and the Top Gunners Fraternity.

2. How did Daddy and Hypa from France become such big supporters of reggae/dancehall music?

A long story star!!! We started in 97 as musicians in a reggae backing band (Daddy at Drums and Hypa at percussions). We quickly started to compose our own riddims and so build our own studio. At the beginning we were inspired a lot by the jamaican 70′s/80′s music. In 2001 we launched our radio show broadcasted on air every week. The show was promoting jamaican music from the 70s to the latest releases. That’s how we became big reggae/dancehall fans and start pree the whole jamaican music and culture. In the mean time we also were listening a lot of US Hip Hop and RnB stuff and use to play remixs blending jamaican and american music. Furthermore we were also listening to all Chinese Assassin mixcds and it was just a matter of time before we decide to create our own remixs.

3. Besides remixes, have u ever produce original tracks?

Yes, as we said before we were building riddims and work for french artists (Keefaz, Messalie, Kenyon, Tiwony…) before making any remixs but the list is too long to name them all. We have produced riddims and tracks featuring artists like Konshens and Delus, Kari Jess, Hitmaker, Mr Vegas, Chukki Starr and a lot more… Lately we rebuild an instrumental produced by Black Temple Records (Try To Conquer I Riddim) featuring Johnny Osbourne, Shinehead and Carl Meeks…

4. Whats the hardest song u ever come across to remix perfectly.

Whoyyyy, hard question, you know sometimes we spend crazy time to find the right instrumental for an acapella or the right acapella for an instrumental and find nothing good, in the other hand sometimes its just takes 5 minutes to have THE IDEA.
From we find the idea…. its all about make it fit proper and hide all likkle defaults wid a magic touch…. Technically, Our “Gangsta Remix” featuring Mavado, Vybz Kartel and Delus was pretty hard to build becoz it was impossible to find the instrumental (G Unit/Movado “Let It Go”), we had to build it from the song !!!!! Another example is the Kanye West Sizzla “Stronger” because it was very long to make sizzla’s vocal fit perfectly with the riddim… Same for the Lollipop Remix (crazy editing on the vocals) or Knock You Down Remix. We could mention a lot… There’s no easy remixs with D&H !!!!

5. when did u start remixing tracks?

LOL: 2007!!!! We started makin remixs for our radio show to have exclusive joints to play and went to a higher level after we linked with “Mixcds Kings” Chinese Assassin. First was Konshens “Monster Remix” and then “Guess who’s technologic?”!!!!!

6. Bout remixs, I heard you also work for sound systems?

Yes a lot, we sellin our services to Djs and Soundsystem mixing and remixing dem dubs. But you know the soundsystem peoples… its top secret work!!! So yuh dun kno maybe you favorite sound already works with D&H!!!!

7. How do u choose ur projects remixes? Mix cd?

For the remixs 2 possibilities : The first thing is anytime we feel a song could be good for a remix, we checking in our HUGE acapellas/instrumentals collection and try to work it out. Then It’s all about family and links, mostly with the singers/producers/labels we working with. Bout the mixcds , we just making some to promote our skills and our artists.

8. Notice you feature konshens alot – whats the connection?

Because of our radio show we met him thru myspace in 2006… we straight rated the style and send him some riddims and build a real connection! A so di ting set !!!! beginnning of 2008 we went to Sherlock (Kingston-JA) and he’s one of those who really brought we inside the jamaican music business. From that time we never stop working with him and his brother Delus producing, mixing and remixing songs for them and Konshens Label : SubKonshusMusic. SUBKONSHUS/SOJAH/D&H A MAAAAD TEAMMMM !!!!!

9. How does the french relate to dancehall music in your words?

A long time the reggae and dancehall movement touched France (80′s), we have nuff singers, producers and soundsystem mostly playing reggae but the dancehall massives growing a lot now.

10. Whats next for D&H , what shoould the people look forward to?

BAGGA TINGS !!!!!! From summer 2009 we had our official studio mixing company, so you can expect a lot with that, for instance, as engineers we’re mixing actually the new Barrington Levy song called “Murderer” featuring Snoop Dogg and Mims for Platinum Camp Prod$, we’re also mixing the remix of Konshens “Realest Song” featuring Bounty Killer…As producers, we soon gonna release some reggae and dancehall riddims (Mellow Riddim and Start Wine Riddim) and singles with artists of the team. As Djs, the next project the people can look forward to is a Mixcd featuring the 3 Shadyvilles Caribbean Djs from Europ : DJ Septik (Belgium), DJ Waxfiend (Holland) and D&H. Of course we will keep on remixing and sharing the hottest chunes on our website so check it out !!!!

Judge Says He Cannot Intervene In Jail House Rules In Banton Case

Get the Flash Player to see the wordTube Media Player.

A judge has ruled that he cannot interfere with jail house procedures in the case of reggae singer Buju Banton. U.S. Magistrate Anthony Porcelli made the ruling Friday morning at a hearing based on dietary concerns from the defense.  Porcelli said he would not interfere with operations of the Pinella County Jail and also said he would not order Banton`s release because he believes there`s a risk he could flee to his home country.

The ruling came after federal prosecutors defended a defense claim that The Grammy-nominated, Jamaican-born reggae singer is being treated inhumanely in jail while awaiting trial on drug charges.  These are `lies,` a federal prosecutor said today.

Defense attorney David Oscar Markus had filed a motion for the hearing Monday, claiming his client, born Mark Anthony Myrie, had lost 40 pounds because he was denied the vegetarian diet he requires according to his Rastafarian religion.

But Assistant U.S. Attorney James Preston denied the claim and presented evidence that Banton had in fact gained 11 pounds. A jail official also was called to testify in the hearing and he claimed Banton never asked the jail chaplain to could be placed on a vegetarian diet.

Instead, he said he reviewed records of Banton`s commissary transactions and found purchases of meat and fish, including chicken, tuna and mackerel.

Attorney Markus, however, said Banton gave other inmates the meat he bought in the commissary and argued that Banton told him he filed a diet request with the chaplain and also had a cleric phone the jail on his behalf.

He told the court that Banton`s `mental and physical health has been rapidly deteriorating,` and that it has hindered his ability to prepare for his April 19 trial.

Markus asked a federal judge to release Banton on bail so he can be transferred to an immigration detention facility. Failing that, Markus requested that Banton be moved to a `non-maximum security` wing.

But the judge denied his request.

Banton was arrested in Miami in December and transferred in January to the Pinellas jail, which holds federal prisoners awaiting trial. He is being held without bail on charges of conspiring to distribute cocaine and aiding and abetting his co-defendants in possessing a firearm during the course of cocaine distribution.

Disney makes reggae album?

The magic of Disney meets the magical isle of Jamaica, as Walt Disney Records readies an album of classic Disney songs newly recorded by a cross-section of top reggae musicians. The Disney Reggae Club features songs from immortal Disney animated films – from The Little Mermaid to Jungle Book – recorded by such esteemed artistes as Grammy-winning reggae legend Toots (of Toots and the Maytals fame), five-time Grammy winner Ziggy Marley, reggae’s most prolific and long-lasting production team Sly and Robbie, multiple-Grammy winner Cedella Marley, Grammy winner Burning Spear, legendary British band UB40 and Hasidic rapper Matisyahu. The album is set to arrive in stores and at online retailers on June 8.

“The genius of Disney songs is that they are timeless and adaptable to every musical genre,” said executive producer Brian Malouf. “Reggae is so joyous and spirited, we knew these songs would lend themselves perfectly. I’m happy to say the artistes, many of them true legends of reggae, all jumped at the chance to participate.”

Artistes and tracks included on the album are:

  1. Circle of Life from (The Lion King) performed by Matisyahu
  2. Can You Feel the Love Tonight (The Lion King) performed by Cedella Marley

WAGGY TEE WEIGHS IN ON THE GENESIS

As DASECA’s Genesis riddim surpassed all expectations and became the third best-selling (iTunes) album of all new Reggae album releases on day one of its digital release, Floridian Reggae – icon radio DJ Waggy Tee – voiced his opinion on the way the Genesis was marketed and promoted:

“I hope we can take this whole industry back to where it was beneficial for everyone, first up the producers,” said Waggy Tee, who premiered the Genesis on Miami’s 99 JAMZ station last week.  “Any service or input I can give in this new movement to improve our music (reggae, dancehall) to make it official and proper I am willing to give assistance,” continued Waggy Tee, echoing the sentiments of many people in the industry since DASECA announced three weeks ago that they would be promoting their riddim in a structured way.
“So much years I have fought with corporate to respect our music and add it in rotation for airplay,” lamented Waggy. “But end up in a wall because of so much low quality production (non mixed & mastered) circulating around and no direction in promotion, no managing & production department to call or talk to about their music. Its so unreal, and to the crossover market they look at our music as not ready for prime time since we don’t have our shit together (organized).
Anyway i could go on & on and sound like a broken record (cliche) about the past 10 years of our music and industry its sad that we still haven’t gotten the formula yet to compete in the market.”

With several other Jamaican production houses also structuring releases in a similar way, it seems their may be a new movement in Dancehall and Reggae to address the ailing sales and lack of proper marketing/promotion by the traditional Reggae labels. Genesis rididm is available on iTunes, Amazon, Juno and all other digital retail stores now

Buju’s Lawyer Files Bail Application; Says He Has Lost 40lbs

Citing health concerns, Buju Banton’s lawyer, David Markus, reportedly filed an emergency motion for bond (bail) with the federal courts earlier today. According to the motion, Banton has lost 40 pounds and has not been provided with a diet (vegetable and fruit-based) in accordance with his religious views. The bond hearing is set for this Friday (March 26) at 10 a.m. The motion also stated that on March 18 (last week Thursday), Banton was moved from the Pinellas County Jail’s general population area to a higher security section – a punishment for giving his food to another inmate – and that since this move, Banton’s “physical and mental health has been rapidly deteriorating.“

Banton has been in custody since his detention on Federal drug charges in Florida in December, 2009.

VIVIAN BLAKE IS DEAD

American Gangster….The Jamaican Shower Posse

SKE | MySpace Video

Infamous Shower Posse founder and former leader Vivian Blake died last night at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI), THE STAR understands.

Blake died after being ill for some time and was reportedly suffering from diabetes.

Efforts to get comments from the hospital and close relatives proved futile up to late last night.

Blake arrived in Jamaica on January 29 last year, after spending more than eight years behind bars in the United States.

Blake landed at the Norman Manley International Airport and was afterwards taken to the CIB headquarters where he was processed.

He was sentenced to 28 years in 2000 when he admitted to racketeering and criminal conspiracy that allegedly culminated in about 1,400 murders.

He never faced a jury after inking a plea-bargain deal, which resulted in the time he served while in Jamaica being used as part of his sentence.

Tarrus Riley shines in Europe and US. Nabs RMAA Nomination

Reggae Singer and Songwriter Tarrus Riley ended his 2009-2010 Europe and North America ‘Contagious’ tour on a high note closing with a sensational set at the 17th annual Bob Marley Movements Caribbean Festival in Miami, Florida.

After a successful leg in US and Canada late last year, the artiste resumed his album title tour this January through March making waves in some thirty cities across France, Belgium, London, Sweden, Spain, Holland, Italy, Switzerland, Czech Republic and Germany as well as completing stints in California and Florida. His first extended set in Europe, while the cold whistled and howled outside, Riley warmed patrons up with some sweet music on the inside, “With Tarrus Riley you can always expect to hear ‘feel good music’…music with a meaning as well as music that uplifts the spirit and soul and I delivered just that. The set list had a great mix of material – hits from the previous albums including ‘She’s Royal’, ‘Lion Paw’ as well as current material from the Contagious album including ‘Start Anew’, ‘Love’s Contagious’, ‘Human Nature’, ‘Living The Life of A Gun’ among others. The crowd was highly responsive at each venue and you could see that they were visibly tuned in, singing along with us word for word and really enjoying themselves.”

Performing to sold out stops each night across Europe including Ghent in Belgium, the Sapphire Club and the Brixton Academy in London, Stockholm in Sweden and the U- Club in Wuppertal, Germany, Riley who was joined by rising Reggae stars I-Octane, Duane Stephenson and the Blak Soil band led by saxophonist extraordinaire Dean Fraser, then travelled to the US where they were well received  at the Fox Theater in Oakland, California, The Catalysts in Santa Cruz, the Arcata Theater in California amongst multiple additional venues before Riley capped things off as a headline act at the Bob Marley Movements Caribbean Festival. “The North America stops were also really great this time around…Still a bit chilly but definitely not as cold as Europe” said Tarrus. “We were concentrated this leg towards the West in California then headed South to Florida whereas the last time we touched a bit of everywhere including Canada, Rhode Island, New York, Virginia etc. We again brought the best of our positive vibes spreading the message of positivity, unity and love through good, clean music.”

And while Riley was covering significant ground on his international ‘Contagious’ Tour, he was also making a clean sweep at local award presentations as well as receiving international nods and securing top spots on international music charts. At the Excellence in Music and Entertainment (EME) he copped the Cultural Artiste of the Year as well as won the Best Cultural Artiste category at the local Youth View Awards. Following this, Riley’s laurels continued with recent nomination for top “International Reggae Artist” at RMAA (Reggae Music Achievement Awards) which will be held in Toronto, Canada on June 12, 2010 as well as he celebrates the number one spot for his album ‘Contagious’ in Canada on Galaxie TV Satellite Channel (Bell TV, Rogers TV, Videotron TV, MTS TV, Sasktel TV, Shaw TV, Telus TV).

A stellar first yearly quarter sealed by sold out tours and significant wins and nominations, Riley who is now back on the ‘Rock’ says he will resume writing and recording new material as well as continue to push his Contagious album which has been doing very well internationally, “I enjoy writing and making music. That process never stops…I love what I put out and the people love what we put out so we always have to keep it fresh and keep it going.”

Vybz Kartel & Mavado for youth talk

EMBATTLED Jamaican artistes Vybz Kartel and Mavado will talk to Barbadian youths at the gymnasium of the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex on March 26.

Responding to criticism from various quarters about the two artistes going into schools, event planners Mikey Dread and Indian said yesterday the dancehall artistes were never scheduled to go into schools.

They told the DAILY NATION Kartel and Mavado volunteered to speak to the youths in the public setting.

“Parents can come, they can bring their children and they could ask questions one-on-one to interact with Mavado and Vybz Kartel. People don’t understand that this is just music; there is nothing personal between Mavado and Vybz Kartel — just music,” Indian insisted.

Additionally, Indian contended that contrary to what was being suggested, there was no one on the local scene who could speak to the youngsters on the same level as Vybz Kartel and Mavado could.

“We have role models here, tell them pick out two of the role models that they suggest to go on the blocks, in the ghettos in Barbados, in the schools and talk to these people and ask them if they will listen. They will not listen,” Indian insisted.

“We’ve been preaching peace for years . . . . We had peace songs and what the case maybe before Mavado and Vybz Kartel. It’s the youngsters in Barbados that looking up to these guys, yuh know. They believe in these guys, who better else . . . . Wha’ever madness wunna ’bout hey doing, and dis whole Gully and Gaza t’ing wunna gotta dun wid dat dey, it’s just music,” Indian said.

The two gave the assurance that no lewd music, language or behaviour would come from either Kartel or Mavado at the March 26 show, slated for the Midway car park.

Hamilton Lashley and the Barbados Youth Action Programme are jointly facilitating the public forum. The time for the event will be announced in the media. (YB)

Brand New from Daseca
brought to you by Jabba and Bobby Konders
Available on Itunes – March 23rd
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Hit-making trio DASECA have decided to take a refreshing approach to their latest riddim project – the Genesis. Instead of flooding the marketplace with CDs and free download links as soon as the project had been mixed, they decided to structure its release by keeping it exclusive to select radio DJs until it becomes available at digital retail (iTunes etc) March 23.

“What has become the norm for Jamaican producers is to literally give away the music as soon as it is finished,” laments David Harrisingh, one third of DASECA. “Email blasts, social networking sites, blogs etc ensure the music ends up in the hands of any and everyone who wants it, and they don’t have to pay for it. So while it creates a hype and give artists hit songs and generates shows and dub plate income for them, the producer has to pretty much wait on the few remaining labels who deal with Reggae to license a song here or there for a compilation. Whereas in the past labels would take the whole riddim from a producer, that has stopped because of poor sales and because our music has never been marketed properly causing it to end up in a mire. Producers are needed in the business just as much as artists so we have to find a way to survive.”

The Genesis riddim was premiered on New York’s coveted HOT 97, by Bobby Konders and Jabba last week Sunday and the buzz has already given DASECA much encouragement for their approach. The section of the radio show during which the Genesis was recorded by music fans and posted on YouTube instantly. A UK commercial radio premiere followed and of course Jamaica. With similar premieres taking place in Canada, Miami, Washington DC, Boston and other territories the trio are gearing up for the final marketing push this week before its imminent digital release. Banners and features on several influential blogs are all in the works.

“While we are realistic about the numbers we expect to do, we have to take a stance and try and regulate our ting,” added Craig Harrisingh. “We are also expecting it to leak as soon as it is available, perhaps even before, but for us this is about trying to make a difference. We hope every producer takes a look at what we are trying to achieve and does something about it too so we can help change the culture of how we market and sell our music, because we are all feeling it. Thats why we called the riddim Genesis, because for us and we hope for the business as a whole, it signals a new beginning.”

DASECA have many more riddims and singles lined up ready to release, next out the pack is a throwback sounding riddim called Dancehall Again and will be dropping them the same way the Genesis is being worked. Genesis will be available online (iTunes, Amazon, Zune, Verizon ringtones etc) as of March 23rd. Support the music!

David Rodigan endorses Daseca’s new riddim – “Genesis”

A release was sent out earlier this week regarding the refreshing approach DASECA are taking to the release of their new riddim, the Genesis. UK Disc Jockey, Reggae icon David Rodigan, was so moved by the strategy he decided to pen his feelings, extracts of which are below.
“This is David Rodigan and I am delighted to have read your press release regarding a “new beginning.” This is a heartfelt cry from me and thousands of other “reggae” fans in Europe who have become utterly disillusioned by the state of the Jamaican music industry and the lack of thought behind its promotion.
I am delighted that you have seen fit to return to the ethics of traditional music promotion, whereby only certain dee jays and radio stations are able to preview your productions, and in doing so are able to create a demand for a new song. I am happy to know that from now on you will be professionally selective in choosing who has your new productions.
You are a young, imaginative and creative production house in Jamaica and the music desperately needs young people with new ideas.
Reggae music must rise up again and that means positivity and a return to melody and harmony. Much of what is now being produced in Jamaica does not export outside Norman Manley Airport.”

Rodigan also had some crucial things to say regarding song content and type of beats currently being produced in Jamaica.
