Gay Rights Activists Turn Heat Up On Another Reggae Singer

With gay rights target, reggae star Buju Banton, under house arrest and facing a new drug trial, rights activists are turning their attention to another reggae singer.

On Sunday, over four dozen gay activists showed up outside Harlow`s, a restaurant and nightclub in Sacramento, California, to protest the performance there of reggae star, Capleton.

The protestors accused Capleton of using anti-gay lyrics in his music, including words like `kill` and `burn` in reference to cleansing the world of homosexuality.

Capleton`s manager insists critics have mistranslated his lyrics. Similar claims have been made against Banton, born Mark Anthony Myrie, for his lyrics.

`We`ve had a lot of suicides; youth suicides because of hate speech that kids are inundated with sometimes,` Ken Pierce of Equality Action NOW, a gay rights organization, was quoted as saying of the protest.

However, the show went on despite the protest with Harlow`s Victor Torza, one of the managers of this family owned business, stating, `We`ve never censored anyone else; any other artist before. I don`t see a reason to do so now. Never in the history of booking the shows have we censored anyone because of their lyrics and what not. So, we`re sticking to our guns on this.`

DENNIS BROWN: THE CROWN PRINCE OF REGGAE: SINGLES 1972-1985

Dennis Brown (1957-1999) was one of the greatest singers of the last half-century, his voice improvisationally resourceful, graceful, resonant, optimistic: maybe Jamaica’s Sam Cooke. His reggae records – made with the best Jamaican producers and rhythm sections, full of Rasta rhetoric while covering the American soul and pop he had his ear to – maintained a high level through the ’70s and ’80s. There’s already a collection out there with a very similar title released by Trojan, in which you’ll find many of his more famous tracks. This one goes deeper into his catalog, with songs produced by Phil Pratt, Joe Gibbs and Niney the Observer, among others; they include “What About the Half”; “So Long Rastafari Calling”; a cover of “Black Magic Woman”; and the super-lovely “Rocking Time.” A companion DVD contains a charismatic show from the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1979, on which Brown beams through some of the hits not included elsewhere in the set, like “Wolves and Leopards” and “Money in My Pocket.” (17 North Parade/VP, two CDs, 1 DVD, $25.98)

ETANA SET TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM AND DIGITAL EP

Reggae singer/songwriter sensation Etanareturns with her highly anticipated sophomore album Free Expressions in February 2011 from VP Records. Before her new studio effort hits the shelves, VP Records is releasing a digital EP entitled Free, which features three of her current hits that are also included on the album. The digital EP drops on December 7, 2010, to satisfy fans during the wait for the full-length album.

Etana deems this second album Free Expressions because she adamantly refuses to be constrained by approach or lyrical content. “This album was produced a little differently from the first, most of the sessions were less planned so there is more of a free vibe,” she reveals. “I just wanted to express myself freely, write just what I want without thinking too hard about what anyone’s opinion would be – just doing music as I feel to do it.”

Fans are so consistently enthralled by Etana’s music that several tracks from Free Expressions have already topped the charts in Jamaica and reggae charts internationally, including “Free,” “August Town” and “Mockingbird.” The album’s first official single “Free” was produced by Kemar “Flava” McGregor and offers a somber reflection of a prolonged period of struggle endured by the artist. Its second single “Heart Broken” is equally as heartfelt with London-based producers Curtis Lynch, Jr. and Gussie Clarke at the helm.

Etana’s unabashed romanticism shines on the lovers’ rock tunes “I Know You Love Me” and “Happy Heart,” with both tracks produced by Flava. “Move On,” also produced by Lynch, adapts a neo-soul reggae fusion that laments a break-up tale that embraces life’s new possibilities, as does the upbeat reggae track “My Name Is,”which was produced by Stephen Stanley. She also targets those erroneous character assessments and the cutthroat competitiveness that dwells throughout the music industry on the roots rocking “Mockingbird,” produced by Flava, and the hip-hop tinged “Venting,” produced by Lynch.

Etana highlights her soulful side on “I Got You,” produced by Specialist and Alborosie, while “Day By Day,” produced by Joel Chin, offers spiritual renewal.“People Talk,” produced by Rohan Dwyer and Specialist, reflects her determination to succeed against all odds in the music business.

Free Expressions also furthers Etana’s reputation as a skillful songwriter as she penned 12 of the album’s 14 tracks. Her regal countenance, uncompromising messages of self-empowerment and the lyrical depth of her distinctive hit-filled catalogue offers a major challenge to the dominant perception of female artists’ images and identities. With Free and Free Expressions, Etana offers revolutionary changes in popular Jamaican music, one captivating, genre-blurring song at a time.

BUSTAMANTE HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN TO BENEFIT FROM CHAIN OF HOPE FUNDRAISER

On Saturday, November 20th 2010, Chain of Hope Jamaica will hold a fundraiser at the residence of Guardsman Group CEO Kenny Benjamin with proceeds going towards the creation and equipping of a new ICU and cardiac facility at the Bustamante Children’s Hospital as well as specialized training for staff.

The event, organized by Chain of Hope Jamaica’s co-ordinator Lisa D’Oyen, will kick-off a year-long public relations and fundraising campaign under the theme “Healing Hearts”. Monies raised will be utilized to build and equip a new cardiac centre at Bustamante Hospital for Children, supplied with vitally needed equipment and a 10-bed ICU cardiac catheter lab, both of which will cater to the needs of children of Jamaica and surrounding islands.  Currently two Jamaican doctors are being trained in the UK- one as a peadiatric cardiac anaesthetist and the other as a peadiatric cardiologist courtesy of Chain of Hope. The organization is also sponsoring a nurse from the UK who is teaching the nurses at Bustamante how to treat cardiac patients recovering from surgery.

Chain of Hope is a UK-based not-for-profit organization that performs critical cardiac surgery free of charge on children in countries such as Egypt, Mozambique and Kenya. The only country in the region that Chain of Hope visits, Jamaica has been benefitting from their presence sine 1995. To date, the group has done approximately 190 surgeries.  This year the Chain of Hope team expects to treat 25 children, including patients from Dominica and Grenada, one of whom needs the expertise of Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub, the  organization’s founder and an expert in the repair of valves.

Professor Yacoub has been visiting and helping Jamaican patients since the 1970s.  He operated on the former Mayor of Kingston and National Security Minsiter  Eli Matalon, OJ in the 1980s.  In 1997, the late Diana, Princess of Wales was to accompany him to Jamaica, but it was not meant to be as she passed a month before the scheduled trip.

The team headed by Professor Yacoub is made up entirely of volunteers.  It includes eminent surgeons from Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children and The Royal Brompton Hospital in the UK as well as Skerjby Hospital in Denmark.

Every year 400 children in Jamaica are born with a heart defect and many suffer from rheumatic heart disease which affects their valves. According to Emma Scanlan, Executive Director of Chain of Hope, a permanent staffed facility is “critical to their care.”

In addition to Ms. Scanlan and the medical staff, attendees at Saturday’s soiree will include Chain of Hope Jamaica staff including Peadiatric Cardiologist Dr. Charmaine Scott, Cardiac Anaesthetist, Dr. Lambert Innis, and Cardiothoracic Surgeons, Drs. Roger Irvine and Sherard Little. Invitees include representatives of local business like Restaurants of Jamaica, Flow, KPMG, Scotia Bank and the Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel.  Key Sponsors include Red Stripe, Air Jamaica and Guardsman Group of Companies.  The night’s honorees are Professor Yacoub and Her Excellency, the Most Honourable Lady Allen, wife of the Governor General of Jamaica.  Persons wishing to make financial contributions can contact Lisa D’Oyen at 876-968-5336 or email [email protected].

Gyptian takes Soul Train Award 2010

VP Records recording artist Gyptian is honored with the 2010 Soul Train Award for ‘Best Reggae Artist’,picking up the iconic trophy following his featured performance during the show, held at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia on Wednesday, November 10. The Soul Train Awards was hosted by Oscar-nominated actors Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard and airs on both BET and Centric on Sunday, November 28 at 9pm EST.

The reggae category presentation followed Gyptian’s performance that lit up the house with Jamaica flags on the big screens and green, yellow and black splashed across the stage, silhouetting backup dancers under the guidance of famed celeb choreographer Fatima Robinson. Gyptian first teased the crowd with his new single “Nah Let Go” before breaking into his smash breakout hit, “Hold You,” much to the crowd’s delight.

“I came all the way from the beautiful island of Jamaica to win this prestigious award,” stated an elated Gyptian during his acceptance speech. “Thank you to BETCentric and Soul Train for this tremendous recognition.” Gyptian also thanked the entire VP Records team and all hisfans worldwide for supporting him from day one.

Gyptian was also a featured speaker at a forum for The Grammy Foundation in collaboration with Centric prior to the show, along with comedian Chris Spencer and VP Records’ Vice President/Marketing and Promotions Cristy Barber, where they addressed Atlanta-based students pursuing careers in the arts and entertainment. He later mingled with fellow entertainment personalities, including singers NeYo and Erykah Badu, actress and show host Taraji P. Henson, actor Lamman Rucker, BET’sA. J. Calloway and even CNN’s Wolf Blizter, just to name a few of the hundreds of celebs who turned out for the legendary musical event.

This is the second major award for Gyptian this year. He nabbed the 2010 MOBO Award for ‘Best Reggae Artist’ in October in Liverpool, England. Gyptian broke from his sold-out European tour to perform at the Soul Train Awards, and just finished opening for Mary J. Blige at the O2 Arenaduring her UK tour before flying to Atlanta.

Gyptian’s album  Hold You is now available in stores and online. Both singles, “Nah Let Go” and “Hold You” are also available on iTunes, and“Hold You” was released on iTunes UK just last week. The smash single has already sold nearly 300,000 digital units thus far.
