Sophia Brown Pushes Back ‘Catch Me If You Can’ Release

Sophia Brown has pushed back the release of her album tentatively titled Catch Me If You Can to sometime next year. In the meantime, the shapely singer plans to continue promoting her singles already in the market, and perhaps release a couple more before the end of the year.

Brown spent the latter part of 2010 and most of the early months of this year working tirelessly, recording and producing the songs that were to comprise the album because, under her deal with Universal Records, her album was due this year. She said she decided to delay the release because she wasn’t satisfied with some of the songs.

“The album itself has been completed but I am not satisfied. I’m pulling four tracks and putting them aside and coming back with another four banging songs that I think will help set some flames in what I want to bring for this album,” she said. “I want to satisfy myself and my fan base, that has been growing rapidly.”

Possible name change

She explains that since the year is almost done she is looking at 2012 for a new release date for the “Grammy-worthy” album that might also have a name change. The album was to be named after the recently released single Catch Me If You Can, but she is toying with the idea of changing it.

“It’s kind of iffy now because we have stronger singles on the album,” she said.

The single, meanwhile, was released internationally on iTunes on August 16 to all corners of the earth, courtesy of her relationship with Zojak Worldwide, an online distribution service for reggae artistes and bands. Zojak will be securing placement of the song on other popular online stores and websites, including MP3 Waxx, a promotional service used by international hip hop stars like Kanye West and Jay-Z.

Zojak president Aaron Mahfeldt describes Brown as the hardest-working female artiste in reggae, and said her partnership with his company will help her realise her dreams.

Catch Me If You Can has great crossover potential so we will be targeting those markets and help her get the rewards for her hard work,” he told The Gleaner during a telephone interview, noting that the song will also be marketed via banner placement on his company’s website and social networks.

Brown, who signed the deal with Zojak earlier this year, said she has been enjoying the relationship.

“The partnership with Zojak means so much to me because I’ve finally found a company that truly believes in my career and in my hard work,” she said.

“I feel comfortable working with them because they see my drive and what I want to accomplish, and I really want that kind of partnership to take me to the next level.”

As to the benefits derived from the partnership? “The single has been getting rave reviews overseas and now I am getting it out to everywhere music can reach,” Brown said, very proud of how well her fans have responded to the song.

Brown has plans of releasing yet another single before year-end. The song is called My Time To Rise, a title that could prove to be prophetic for the Jamaican songstress.

Beenie & D’Angel’s marital issues stem from last year, says source

Countless Dancehall fans & industry players remain surprised regarding the news that prominent Dancehall couple, Moses “Beenie Man” Davis & Michelle “D’Angel” Downer is getting a divorce after just over 5 years of marriage.  Now, details are slowly emerging as to why they’re separating for good this time.

D’Angel admitted on Monday that she did send Beenie Man divorce papers & issued a statement explaining the reasoning behind her decision. The statement read, “After careful consideration, patience, and virtue Michelle Downer aka D’Angel single mother and served Moses Davis aka Beenie Man papers for divorce, recently. This is a very difficult time for Ms. Downer and she is requesting that the fans, the music fraternity, and the media give her some personal time to deal with this emotional situation. The most important thing in her life right now is the well-being of her son, her family, and her career. D’Angel will continue to maintain a cordial parental relationship with Beenie Man for the sake of a positive and nurturing environment for their son, Marco-Dean Davis. Ms. Downer wishes Mr. Davis happiness and all the best in his future endeavors.”

Beenie Man is reportedly considering whether or not to sign the divorce papers as he tries to recover during this difficult time for both parties. Meanwhile, a source close to the “King of The Dancehall,” broke his silence; explaining that Beenie & D’Angel’s marital issues started shortly after reconciling last year & that many of their arguments centered around accusations of infidelity.  “Both of them are like oil and water, but they love each other a lot,” the source told Urban Islandz. The source continued,  “They are always arguing and accusing each other of infidelity, it’s never smooth sailing from late last year things started deteriorating again, family and friends suggest counseling but that never happen.”

Despite the current, the source offered hope that Beenie & D’Angel could indeed get back together again. “Although divorce papers file, these two people love each other so don’t be surprise if you see them back together,” the source claimed. Similar accusations of infidelity were made by both parties in 2007 but the couple worked on their problems & for the next 4 years tried to work things out.

The couple’s problems were magnified when Beenie Man called into Walshy Fire’s radio show in Miami; suggesting the duo could no longer co-exist as a couple. Divorce rumors intensified when D’Angel was a no show to Beenie Man’s birthday party last Thursday; angering Beenie. “Imagine mi de a mi birthday party and ah cut mi cake and mi wife no de ya wid mi,” Beenie said whilst adding, “She nuh come a my party but she go a Bounty Killer birthday party. F**k her.”

Beenie then appeared on TVJ’s Entertainment Report program; confirming that divorce papers were in the works & that the two had not spoken in two weeks.

Flexx wants no part of Gully-Alliance feud

Veteran Dancehall artiste & Gully Squad member, Flexx has distanced himself from the ongoing Gully-Alliance feud; insisting he will not enter into a lyrical feud with Bounty Killer nor members of the Alliance Next Generation (ANG).

Over the last few weeks, Gully Squad member, Chase Cross has traded lyrical jabs with Bounty Killer after Chase alleged that Bounty & other Alliance members were disrespectful towards him & Mavado after the shooting death of their friend, Conroy “Connie” Edwards outside of Bounty’s birthday party earlier this summer. Now, after ANG member, Iyara allegedly called out Cross & Flexx with his new single, “Sen Dem Home,” Flexx insists he wants nothing to do with the Gulliance conflict; implying he doesn’t want to involve in negativity & is looking to build his Dancehall career.

“I say Alliance and Gullyside, but a lot of things need to be addressed, Mi naah diss Bounty Killer, I don’t see the need to do that,” Flexx told the Jamaica STAR. The “Steppin’ Razor” deejay also called upon Mavado & Bounty to settle their differences for the good of the group; suggesting that too much blame is being passed back & forth between their respective camps.

WAYNE WONDER TEAMS UP WITH MYA ON NEW HIT SINGLE, “IF I EVER” REMIX

Grammy Award-nominated reggae starWayne Wonder adds heat to his new single that’s already blazing the charts by teaming up with Grammy Award-winning songstress Mya on the sizzling “If I Ever” Remix. The mastermind of Sean Roy Strachan, producer at Miami-based Jewmaican Records“If I Ever” Remix puts the tune into extended play for Wonder, who hit reggae charts across the U.S., Canada, U.K. and the Caribbean with the original track, earlier this summer.

The original mix was produced by Mark “Bronco” Marsh and co-produced and mixed by Grammy Award-winning music producer Anthony “CD”Kellyfor Wonder’s very own SingSo Records. Once it started hitting ears and airwaves around the world, it caught the attention of Sean Roy, who got Myainto the studio to listen to the track and eventually fuse her vocals with Wonder’s for the monster single. The duo performed it live at Reggae Sumfest following Nicki Minaj’s set, on July 23 in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

“Working with Wayne Wonder was such a delight,” says Mya. “I’ve been a fan of his work for quite some time.  We linked through a mutual producer, Sean Roy, who also produced our remix to ‘If I Ever.’  While working in the studio and rehearsals, Wayne possesses a very focused, but kind, humble spirit.  I also got to see another side of him when he ripped up the stage at Sumfest 2011! What a treat!”

Wonder, who is currently on a North American tour with reggae icon Beres Hammond, is equally as excited about the collaboration. “It’s great to have the single on the charts and collaborate with Mya on the remix,” reveals Wonder. “We took it to the core when Mya joined me for the Sumfest performance and it was well received. Up next is the video so I’m looking forward to getting that out to the fans.” Plans for the video will go into motion once the tour with Beres ends; it will be directed by the internationally-acclaimed director Gil Green.

Miami-based producer Sean Roy Strachan has produced tracks for artists such as Tanto Metro & Devonte and Kevin Lyttle, to name a few, and is also one of the producers in Sean Kingston’s Time Is Money Entertainmentcamp. “Initially, I presented the remix project to good friend, Sean Paul, who really liked it and had agreed to do a feature on the record,” discloses Strachan. “But while in a listening session in Miami with Mya regarding tracks I produced for her upcoming albums, we somehow came across the ‘If I Ever’ track. Before then, I had never thought about it, but instantly I knew it would be a song better-suited for a male and female artist combination. We got into the studio a few weeks later and the rest is history.”

The remix also saw co-production from Christopher Garvey and Joshua Rechani, and was mixed at Interscope Records by multi-Grammy Award-winning engineer, Niko Marzouka. The sizzling single is now available on  iTunes.

Beenie Man claims marriage with D’Angel is over, divorce papers sent

Prominent Dancehall couple, Moses “Beenie Man” Davis & Michelle “D’Angel” Downer is apparently preparing for a permanent separation after Beenie confirmed on TVJ’s Entertainment Report this past weekend that divorce papers are indeed in the works & that the two are separating.

The couple’s marriage has endured many trials & tribulations, including countless speculation regarding possible infidelity amongst other rumors. Beenie & D’Angel previously separated in 2007 but worked out their problems shortly thereafter & all seemed normal within the Davis household. However, the “King of the Dancehall” now insists that their most recent break-up could be permanent; telling ER, “Yeah, divorce papers send, mi nuh kno if it sign.” Additionally, he claimed that D’Angel told Beenie to disappear from her life & intimated that the two haven’t spoken within the last two weeks. “Divorce a divorce man, that how it goes man, you move on. In life, you have to adapt & adjust, when yuh adjust in life, yuh haffi jus move on, yuh a big man,” he intimated.

He didn’t elaborate in further detail regarding the separation but confirmed that their reconciliation in 2007 was in no way a publicity stunt. “Getting back together with my wife is always getting back together with my wife, yuh know. Wi a parent & we have a son coming up in life. I never wan’ dis to kinda be a part of his life; to know that his mother & father are actually getting a divorce, but time a times & tings change. Yuh can tek but so much as a person,” Beenie said whilst seemingly holding back tears.

Beenie claimed that he may never marry again given his feelings for D’Angel & believes that custody of their son, Marco Dean will likely reside with her given his busy schedule but insisted he’ll remain a very active part of his life.

Rumors of a pending divorce sparked last week when Beenie Man called in to Walshy Fire’s radio show in Miami; implying that they could no longer co-exist. “There will always be a Beenie Man & there will always be an Angel, but not together,” Beenie said. Speculation grew even more on Thursday night when D’Angel was a no-show at Beenie Man’s birthday party; deeply upsetting Beenie Man. “Imagine mi de a mi birthday party and ah cut mi cake and mi wife no de ya wid mi,” Beenie said whilst adding, “She nuh come a my party but she go a Bounty Killer birthday party. F**k her.”

D’Angel a no show for Beenie’s birthday party, rumors of marital issues sparked

Prominent Dancehall power couple, Moses “Beenie Man” Davis & Michelle “D’Angel” Downer are reportedly experiencing turbulence within their marriage once again after D’Angel failed to turn up at Beenie’s birthday party last night.

Anonymous sources close to the situation told Urban Islandz that D’Angel did not fly back down to Jamaica to personally wish her husband a happy birthday at the party which was attended by several industry players. That left a very bitter taste in Beenie’s mouth; prompting him to voice his displeasure to the crowd, according to the sources. “Imagine mi de a mi birthday party and ah cut mi cake and mi wife no de ya wid mi,” Beenie told the crowd.

A seemingly irate Beenie also told the crowd as he cut the cake by himself, “She nuh come a my party but she go a Bounty Killer birthday party. F**k her,” relating to Bounty’s birthday party at the QUAD nightclub earlier this summer.

Beenie Man talks U.S visa, Gully-Alliance feud & Vybz Kartel

Internationally acclaimed Dancehall artiste, Moses Davis, more popularly known as Beenie Man shared his thought regarding a myriad of industry talking points including Vybz Kartel, regaining his United States visa & the ongoing issues between the Gully & Alliance camps.

In a recent interview with Black Chiney disc jock, Walshy Fire, Beenie Man expressed delight regarding the retrieval of his United States visa & being able to celebrate his 38th birthday there. “America gi mi a birthday present,” Beenie stated before adding, “Am a Jamaican am not an American, I don’t have an American passport, but dem seh a group a name come down and den the police of Jamaica give dem information about me because my name never de pon di list.”

Beenie Man then called out fellow established Dancehall deejay, Mavado who was re-issued a U.S visa last month. The “King of the Dancehall,” suggested that Mavado’s recent brushes with the law are not setting examples for younger musicians to follow. “We need fi be entertainers and support the youths dem, we no need fi a go a jail and a create problems,” Beenie intimated.

Additonally, Beenie gave his two cents regarding the recent drama evolving within the “Gulliance” involving Mavado’s Gully crew & Bounty Killer’s Alliance crew. Beenie Man hinted that Bounty Killer might be the problem that’s causing the situation to escalate; citing Kartel’s exit from the Alliance in 2006 as the basis for that theory. “Father need fi know wha him a do wid him son dem, cuz member inno Kartel was him son and Kartel gone, now Mavado out fi cut, so di father muss a do something wrong,” Beenie insisted. The “Go Go Club” went on to say, “It no sound good when a father and son a fight and is the father fault. We as artist its difficult fi get involve because if you know where it’s coming from you woulda vex to, if you was Mavado you would be vex to.”

Beenie Man also implied that he harbors no ill will towards Vybz Kartel, who he had a falling out with late last year. Beenie implied that he’s focused on his business partnership with Kartel’s former business associate, Corey Todd as they promote the Yaad Swag rum brand. However, the “King of the Dancehall” did say that it would be hard for him to hail Kartel in the streets because of “the brown thing,” (Bleaching).

Beenie Man celebrated his birthday this past weekend at an all-white party at the Madhouse Opium Hardrock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Beenie’s official birthday was on Monday (August 22).

Aidonia condemns altercation, claims ZJ Wah Wa started incident

Well renowned Dancehall deejay, Sheldon “Aidonia” Lawrence has vehemently denied any involvement in an altercation that took place on Friday night between ZIP FM disc jock, ZJ Wah Wa & members of Aidonia’s entourage.

The incident took place in the VIP parking lot at the popular QUAD nightclub in New Kingston following ZJ Wah Wa’s set inside the club. Reportedly, an argument ensued between Wah Wa and the entourage members that later spilled into the parking lot. The men then, allegedly blocked off the disc jock’s car as he attempted to leave the parking that escalated the argument ; leading to two of the men emerging from their cars & assaulting Wah Wa; busting his head open with a bottle. OnStage TV – Reggae’s Gone Country Premiere

Get the Flash Player to see the wordTube Media Player.

As disparate as Jamaican reggae and American country music seem, they actually share many commonalities. Both genres were created by marginalized peoples, be it Jamaicans who flocked from rural locales seeking jobs in the bustling capital Kingston then settled in overcrowded tenement yards often lacking in basic amenities or Americans in the southern Appalachia region residing in economically depressed communities, in near isolation from the rest of the country. As a vital means of expression, each populace fashioned a sonic identity culled from various influences. Jazz, Cuban music, calypso and especially early R&B heard on U.S. radio signals reaching Jamaica were essential components in the creation of the island’s first home-grown popular music, ska, in the early 1960s; the frenetic ska beat was slowed down into rocksteady then morphed into reggae by the late 1960s. Bluegrass, the direct forerunner to country music is derived from the English and Scottish ballad tradition and Irish and Scottish fiddle music. African-American blues musicians also played preeminent roles in crafting bluegrass and country’s signature instrumentation, most notably through their introduction of the banjo, now regarded as an emblematic representation of the region, into the music.

The reggae and country genres are rife with love-gone-wrong songs, romanticized gritty outlaw tales and expressions of unwavering spiritual devotion providing guidance through daily struggles, each delivered in their distinctive regional voices, the molasses thick Jamaican patois heard on many reggae tracks and country’s indelible southern twang…

Tracklisting for Reggae’s Gone Country:

1. California – Romain Virgo & Larry Gatlin

Corey Todd facing assault charge, to make court appearance Tuesday

Successful American businessman Corey Todd is due in court tomorrow to answer to a charge of assault relating to an incident earlier this month with a Stone Love selector. Todd reportedly received a summons last week to appear in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court in Kingston, Jamaica; facing an assault charge stemming from an altercation with Stone Love’s Bill Cosby inside Club Riddim.

The incident took place during Cosby’s set at the weekly event, Swag Tuesdays inside the New Kingston based club. While Cosby was juggling, he played a series of Vybz Kartel songs; notably, a song by the self-proclaimed “World Boss” that takes lyrical jabs at Corey Todd. In an attempt to deter Cosby from playing the song, Todd allegedly dropped a cup on Cosby, followed by dropping a banner on the Stone Love disc jock’s head to gain his attention. After ignoring Todd’s attempts, Cosby intimated that Kartel’s former business associate approached him with a box full of CDs; throwing them at Cosby who knocked away the box. However, Cosby suggested that he was in pain from the altercation.

Todd later confirmed that an altercation taking place & that he did indeed drop a banner on Cosby’s head but implied that the altercation was nowhere near physical. Nevertheless, Todd said that the Kartel diss song towards him sparked the incident & insisted that no Kartel diss songs or any diss songs in general should be played at any Club Riddim event as he attempts to change the atmosphere of the New Kingston based club.

Todd is the former, long-time business partner of Vybz Kartel, who he severed ties with after alleging the “Dancehall Hero” made threats on his life. He’s since teamed with Beenie Man to promote the new Yaad Swag rum brand & most recently signed Aidonia to a management contract. Aidonia will be the focal point of a marketing campaign for Todd’s latest drink, Yaad Stout which hits Jamaican shelves this week.
