Bunny Wailer unhappy with Marley film, blames family for carpet controversy

Marley, the first official documentary on the life and work of Reggae icon, Bob Marley has been lauded with compliments and praise regarding their portrayal of Jamaica’s most prominent musician. However, one of Marley’s closest friends believes the film failed to highlight an important aspect of his career.

Neville ‘Bunny Wailer’ Livingston, the lone surviving member of the legendary Reggae group, The Wailers features prominently in Marley as he intellectually offers vast insights and anecdotes regarding Bob Marley’s personal and professional life. He initially agreed to become a part of this project given that Bob’s eldest son, Ziggy Marley was the executive producer; perhaps painting a more vivid picture of the Reggae icon on and off stage.

However, Wailer insists that when he saw the final cut, there was a major part of Bob Marley’s life that was inadequately portrayed: His Rastafarian beliefs.

Camille Kaye performing the Marvin’s Room Remix “You Could Do Better”

At first glance you may well see a harmless, innocent young Artiste. Very soon you are forced to stop, look qand listen as this choreographer, dancer, songwriter, and singer disarms you with her immense and varied talent. Camille Kaye, the enviable quadruple threat, possesses a velvet vocal instrument enhanced by training she received at the Wolmer’s Dance Troupe and Xaymaca Dance Company in Kingston, Jamaica, as well as Florida International University where she was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Dance with Honors.

Camille Kaye’s career in dance boasts a diversity and range beyond others her age performing all over the globe to audiences as diverse as her experience. Across the Atlantic to the East for an international dance conference (DaCi) in Holland and all over the West at countless events in Jamaica, as well as in her current base Miami, FL. She has worked with renowned choreographers Tanisha Scott and Kameica Reid, been featured in numerous music videos and danced for Brick and Lace, To-Isis, Onaje, Carlene Davis, Bling Dawg and Alaine.Camille’s enviable writing talent, with a sense of maturity and depth beyond her years becomes evident through her lyrical content complemented by her musical choices including working with several of Jamaica’s and Florida’s young and fast rising producers. As a singer/songwriter she has already performed at major concerts such as Atlanta Jerk fest and Miami-Broward Carnival.

Born Camille Tiffany-Kaye Fletcher in Kingston, JA. on October 15th 1989, she not only has the Jamaican colors: black, green, and gold running through her veins, but an undeniable host of talents also passed through her bloodline from her parents who were both amazing singers. Robert and Marcia Fletcher, who were no strangers to the difficulties of the music business, only wished their beloved daughter to have a love for music. However, they were oblivious to the level of talent she had been blessed with and paid no attention to her growing catalog of cassettes and CDs.

As a young girl Camille was always set center stage entertaining family and friends with her energy-infused movement. Little did they know there was a great singer being hidden deep beneath the confident dancer too shy to reveal her vocal talent. Nevertheless, behind closed doors Camille would sing along with her favorite artists such as Lauryn Hill and Mariah Carey, hoping, though having no idea how, to one day fill their shoes. She became well known in Kingston for her choreography and dancing, winning numerous competitions, dancing at different events, back-up dancing for various reggae artists on stage and in music videos, but still kept her singing to herself. One night Ms. Kaye found the courage to sing for a friend who immediately introduced her to Dancehall producer Supahype of 007 Music. With absolutely no experience in songwriting or the recording process she wrote and nervously recorded her first song, leaving the crowded studio in awe. From that point on she continued working with Supahype along with other local producers until leaving for Florida to attend Florida International University in 2007.

While attending FIU, Camille made contact with Dancehall producer Nynex of Calibur Entertainment. She recorded with Nynex what would later become one of her first releases, “Ring Di Alarm”. Even though college was her main priority Camille was determined to balance her love of music with her intense workload as she changed her major from Aviation to Journalism to Music and finally, to Dance. In addition to recording and being a full-time college student, she also began teaching dance, and arranging choreography for various groups when she met Duane “Midilord” Summers, a producer/engineer and former production manager and engineer for Dancehall/Reggae superstars Sean Paul and Shaggy. Midilord produced her other release “Not Like This” and is now closely working with Camille to further build her career.

Camille has her sights set on international stardom, inspired by the successes of acts like Sean Paul, Rihanna and Beyonce. She is eager for an opportunity to do collaborations with or to create choreography for the likes of Usher, Keri Hilson, Missy Elliot and Bruno Mars, Reggae superstars Damian and Stephen Marley and Reggae/Dancehall phenomena Tanya Stephens and Assassin, among others. Here is a multi-talented Artiste, who is bent on touring the world and being a role model for young women. Here is a young Artiste who is ready for the international scene and comes “fully loaded” and ready for the World.

LIGUANEA ART FESTIVAL RETURNS THIS SUNDAY

In its ninth staging, The Liguanea Art Festival (LAF) returns on Sunday April 29, 2012, featuring over 80 artists—the island’s largest outdoor art festival of this kind. This year the Festival proudly celebrate Jamaica’s 50th, “A Nation on a Mission”, thus culminating with the largest festival ever planned, with a diverse and exciting line-ups of artists.
The exhibitors will represent the very best in drawing, painting, photography, ceramics, sculpture and jewellery. Established favourites like Gene Pearson, Franz Marzouca, David and Allison Sinclair, and Owen Beckford, will be joined this year by award-winning sculptor Laura Facey. Facey, is most well known for Redemption Song—the monument at the entrance to Emancipation Park—and will be appearing with pieces from her recent RADIANT COMBS show, as well as other work.

The Festival, the brainchild of June and Tony Wong, owners of Liguanea Drug & Garden Centre, was created to give the opportunity to both experienced and up-and-coming artists, (whether amateurs or professionals), to create an outlet where they could show their work to the public. “The Festival has grown from a small exhibition to a calendar event, giving the over 80 artists invaluable exposure, and the patrons first-hand access to numerous art forms from our Jamaican artists,” says June. “From 500 patrons attending, we are now proud to attract over 2,500 people each year. We look forward to welcoming our biggest crowd this year.”

As always, the LAF committee will also be producing a publication to accompany the event. While the format of the magazine evolved over the years, it is now an established book that is a wonderful companion for the Festival. “The art festival book is an essential part of the Festival experience,” says creative designer of the magazine, Mark Weinberger. “Not only does it incorporate editorial featuring upcoming artists, and stories about the art scene in the Caribbean, but is also a wonderful resource for members of the art community after the Festival.” Magazines can be purchased at the event, and after the event at Liguanea Drug & Garden Centre.

This year’s sponsors include: Jamaica National Building Society, Liguanea Drug & Garden Centre, General Food Supermarket, Victoria Mutual Building Society, Cari-Med, CVM-TV, RJR Communications Group, The Jamaica Observer, First Global Bank, Kirk Distributors, The Best Dressed Chicken, Dewlands Juices, Grace Foods, Hopwood, National Bakery, Olay Skin Care, Scotiabank, The Solid Agency, Wisynco, ZIP & Irie FM.

Presented to the public free of cost, the event will be held in the parking lot of Liguanea Plaza from 10:00AM to 8:00PM. Ample additional parking and shuttle services will be provided at the Sts. Peter & Paul Church grounds and Mailpac Services on Old Hope Road.

2011 saw a slew of new aspiring dancehall reggae artists clamoring to voice (record) on the same repetitive riddims.  Multiple artists with songs on one riddim (instrumental) are a trademark of Dancehall music.  Call it ‘supreme wisdom’ but watching all this from a distance in his adopted home of Toronto, Canada, was Supreme, the golden-voiced Trelawny, Jamaica-born deejay.  Arguably one of the hottest new dancehall artists to come out in a while, Supreme approached his rise in the ranks in a completely new and ground-breaking way.

When the talented 24 year old migrated to Canada in 2009 he knew that he was drastically cutting his chances of ‘blowing’ up in Jamaica as a Dancehall artist. However, being the confident natural star that he is, Supreme embraced that challenge.  What Supreme did next is what sets him apart today from the rest of this field.  Knowing that he would not easily be considered to voice on new riddims by the top music producers in Jamaica, Supreme sought out his own path in Canada.

First he successfully signed with the hottest independent record label in Toronto – Spreez Music Group/J-Nice Records.  Now with 24/7 access to a studio he pulled together a team of producers to turn their experiences in producing different genres of music into making him hot original Dancehall Riddims.  In the hugely multicultural megacity of Toronto, Supreme’s producers include a Persian, an African, an Asian and of course Jamaican-Canadians.  What that unique mix of international talent has brought to his sound is absolutely amazing! *see – his debut album*

Always a professional, Supreme’s versatility as an artist is always on display on every song he is on. His vocal arrangements, unique flow and clever lyrics are complemented successfully by the out-of-the-box dancehall riddims his producers create.  With Supreme always delivering a hot lead song  for them, some of the successful Riddims include the standout Anthem Riddim (featuring Alliance artist, Calado), the DTF Riddim (featuring Natalie Storm – Ward 21) and the Chiffon Riddim (featuring Jah Vinci, Charly Black and more).

Supreme is considered a unique force in Canadian dancehall for his hot crossover collaborations with some of the best hip hop and RnB talent out.  His tracks Hardcore featuring singer TROY BLACK, I Know How featuring the sulty-voiced R&B singer, Akua, Tdot Anthem 2012 featuring the hottest up-and-coming Toronto rapper, Fame, as well as Stab Her featuring Gyssa, are all making their way to Top 40 radio stations worldwide.

All the above-mentioned tracks and a whole lot more will be featured on the highly anticipated Solid & Simple: The Album due out May 2012.  Follow the journey Supreme took to make the album on the official blog: http://www.supremedancehall.blogspot.com

Demarco denies seeking attention from Popcaan feud

Prominent Dancehall singjay, Demarco has garnered mass attention across Jamaican music circles after recently calling out breakthrough Portmore Empire deejay, Popcaan. However, the True Friends singer isn’t doing it to raise his profile.

Last week, Demarco claimed in a Jamaica STAR articlethat Popcaan had stolen his style while intimating that the ‘Gaza Prefect’ is overrated and doesn’t have any lyrics. Over the last month, both artistes have traded lyrical jibes; from Demarco’s Kingston City on Rick Ross’ Stay Schemin’ beat to Popcaan’s Fry Yiy.

On Friday’s episode of TVJ’s Entertainment Report, Demarco continued his attack on Popcaan during an interview with Anthony Miller, implying that the Portmore Empire deejay sparks too much controversy with his lyrics while insisting that he’s prepared to return Dancehall music to its heights when Vybz Kartel and Mavado dominated the scene.

Bob Marley’s family unhappy with MOJO Magazine snub of Reggae legend

The family of legendary Reggae singer, Bob Marley remains surprised by a stunning exclusion of their prominent patriarch from a recent list by an established British magazine. However, they won’t let it negatively affect the aura of his music.

Last week, British based music magazine, MOJO Magazine unveiled their Top 50 Reggae albums of all time in honor of Jamaica’s 50th anniversary of Independence in 2012. The list was filled with many surprises, most notably the declaration that Roots Reggae and melodica legend, Augustus Pablo possessed the greatest two albums of all time with East of the River Nile topping the list followed by his collaborative album with iconic engineer, Osbourne ‘King Tubby’ Ruddock entitled. King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown.

However, the glaring omission for MOJO Magazine’s list was that no album from Reggae’s most accomplished superstar, Bob Marley made the cut; particularly Exodus which was named TIME Magazine’s best album of the 20th century while making the top 50 of Rolling Stone Magazine’s Top 500 albums all-time. It also comes as a surprise given that most of Marley’s chart success came in the United Kingdom.
