Top 10 – Jamaica’s hottest female media personalities

Over the last few years, Jamaican television has become more appealing to watch; not just because of quality of shows that are starting to come out but the people (particularly women) who are hosting these programs.

As a young journalist myself, it’s been great to see the influx of young people involved in media. Even more pleasing to the eye are the borage of beautiful and talented women who’ve sparkled TV sets across the island and, quite frankly, it makes you want to pay more attention to the show, even if it’s not your cup of tea.

10: Lauren Dunn – Mainstream Jamaica has only known Lauren Dunn for a short while but she’s already making big strides within local media. Her show, the Lauren O Lauren (LOL) show has garnered her praise for her unique and somewhat outrageous takes on topics within Jamaican pop culture; drawing her comparisons to American gossip queen, Wendy Williams.

However, Dunn’s attractive attributes, both figure and personality-wise present an aura that can easily draw in fans. Dating back to her days as a host on RETV as well as BETJ’s Wicked Style, her potential has always been there and now a co-host on CVM TV’s The Vibe, that potential’s set to be showcased even more.

9: Amelia ‘Milk’ Sewell – Despite controversies that drastically affected her media career, Amelia ‘Milk’ Sewell seems to have overcome all the drama and returned to the spotlight with some vengeance. Everyone remembers her as the eye-catching host of CVM’s E-Strip (Hit List) which made her a glowing phenomenon.

After fighting to reclaim her top-flight status since her sex tape scandal in 2008, Milk has slowly but surely re-emerged as a force in media, working with now incarcerated Dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel on his reality show, Teacha’s Pet as well as being a judge on Tastee’s Talent Trail. Her model-like looks have always made her hard to resist and regardless of past issues, there’s no denying she’s good at her craft.

8. Shemille Blake – The name might still be unfamiliar for some but the host of Guinness Sounds of Greatness sure seems to be a looker whose face and shape will stay etched in your mind for a while.

Former runner-up in the Miss Jamaica World 2005 pageant, Blake was selected to host the sound clashing program just last year. She adds a blend to the show which has been a hit with Dancehall and Reggae fans alike and with the show growing in popularity, more fans will be familiarized with this young beauty.

Diana King comes out: Prominent Jamaican singer admits to being a lesbian

Internationally acclaimed Jamaican singer, Diana King has taken an unprecedented step within the local music industry as she dropped a bombshell on Thursday, admitting that she is a lesbian.

The highly regarded Reggae singer, known for classics such as Shy Guy, I Say A Little Prayer and L-L-Lies made the confession through a note which she issued on her official Facebook page. It’s a historic moment within the local music industry as she’s the first artiste of note to come out as a homosexual.

In her note, King wrote, “My name is DIANA EUGENA KING, known to most as DIANA KING my fans call me KingSinga.”

“I AM … WOMAN … MOTHER … AUNT … JAMAICAN … AMERICAN … INTERNATIONAL ARTIST … SINGER … SONGWRITER … BAND LEADER … FRIEND … LOVER … ENTREPRENEUR … GODDESS! among other things AND YES!!!…I AM A LESBIAN … the answer to my most asked INDIRECT question. I welcome the “WHO CARES” right now. LOL.”

“I answer now, not because it’s anyone’s business BUT because IT FEELS RIGHT WITH my SOUL and I believe by not answering or hiding it all these years somehow makes it appear as if I AM ASHAMED OF IT or THAT I BELIEVE IT IS WRONG. I FEEL NEITHER OF THOSE THINGS … or I would have grown my hair. But all kidding aside, I AM a private person, but sometimes, one has to step outside of their comfort zone to GROW. This here, that I’m doing, is my road. Not everyone will OR is required to travel this way. Some people will carry this fact about themselves to the grave and that’s their prerogative but, a “GOOD” reputation can be a GIGANTIC LOAD in a girls backpack. I KNOW now that it’s time I fully practice the meaning of my face tattoo, which is LOVE YOURSELF LIVE YOURSELF. I JUST WANT TO KEEP IT REAL.”

Yohan Blake vs. Usain Bolt in Jamaica

Get the Flash Player to see the wordTube Media Player.

Over the last several months, Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake have spent dozens of hours practicing at the same time on the same track under the watchful eye of the same coach.

When it comes to racing — really racing — the Jamaican sprinters have been crisscrossing the globe avoiding each other.

The head-to-head clash can’t be put off any longer.

Bolt, the world-record holder, and Blake, the reigning world champion, will square off this week at the meet called, simply, the Jamaican National Senior Championships — or, what most other countries would call the Olympic trials.

Heats in the 100 meters start Thursday, with the final for that event set for Friday night at National Stadium in Kingston. The 200 starts Saturday and wraps up Sunday.

Bolt will be racing for the first time since being involved in what his publicist said was a “minor” car accident, while returning home from a party in the wee hours of June 10.

Both Bolt and Blake are expected to easily earn spots on the Jamaican Olympic team — widely regarded as the fastest collection of track talent in the world. That would presumably set them up for more significant showdowns in London, where the 100 final is Aug. 5 and the 200 is Aug. 9.

But this will be the first meeting since their 100-meter “race” last year at the world championships, won by Blake after Bolt was disqualified for a false start, and it could set the tone for the upcoming month.

Payday Music Presents Dancehall Legends Vol 1

If the term legend, is defined “as a non-historical story handed down by tradition from earlier times and popularly accepted” and Dancehall as “a genre of Jamaican popular music, a style of dance-oriented Reggae” than the art form that is known as Dancehall, which lives through Reggae, spins the livelihood tales of Jamaican culture is most definitely a legend.

Then infusing with the DJs and Singjays of present, names like Bounty Killer, Buju Banton, Mavado, Vybz Kartel and Sizzla, we create storytellers. Who embed in generations old, new, and yet to come cultural sagas to be enjoyed for years to come creating dancehall legends.

On July 10th, Payday Music Group presents “Dancehall Legends Vol 1” a compilation of work by Grammy award winning producer, Austin “Payday” Green spanning over the last 8 yrs.  This audio collection is a showcase of some of dancehall’s greatest artist that Austin has the opportunity to produce for.

Austin (better known as “Payday” or “Kevin”) Green started his career in music over 14 years ago. With beginnings at Gargamel Studios, work at England’s Jet Star, as well as all the years in between producing, engineering, crafting and creating, Austin Green has contributed greatly to Reggae music. Most recently Austin and the Payday team release “Play Your Part” the official theme song for HelpJA Children initiative.

As “Dancehall Legends” prepares to release, Austin remarks that it was “exciting” going through years of music, choosing selections for the 1st volume, stating, “I’ve produced a lot of good music over the years, I realize my catalogue is growing. I just want to showcase some of the work”. The compilation will have eleven tracks, nine previously released with two exciting new exclusives. Some of the singles featured will be “Informa” Mavado, “Run Dem Mouth” Sizzla, “When Yuh Hold Dem” Vybz Kartel, and “Tek It To The Heights” Capleton.

The exclusives tracks; however, come from Bounty Killer and Buju Banton. The two new songs “Dem A Trace” from Bounty Killer and “Pressure Dem” from Buju Banton, are currently un-released and will be available only on “Dancehall Legends”.  As curiosity might strike to why Payday waited to release these singles, Austin offers this response, I don’t like to rush music. When he (Buju) was incarcerated, people tried to rush and put out what music they had, I don’t do music like that, no bandwagon thing.  It just felt like the time is right to release it. As for the Bounty single, it’s a track we revisited during the “Play Your Part” recording. It’s included on the compilation versus a regular release as to not bring “hype” and “questioning” to the song title “Dem A Trace”.

With that said, let the stories be told and the legends unfold, as Payday Music presents “Dancehall Legends Vol 1” on July 10. The compilation will be available on all digital outlets.

For the premieres of “Dem A Trace” and “Pressure Dem” and more information follow@PaydayMusic. Visit PaydayMusicGroup.com for a complete musical catalog

Busy Signal pleads not guilty in U.S. court case

Embattled Dancehall/Reggae entertainer, Glendale Gordon, more popularly known as Busy Signal, has pleaded not guilty to a charge of absconding bail in his ongoing case in the United States.

The internationally acclaimed singjay answered to the charge of failing to appear in court during a hearing on Monday in Minnesota before the presiding judge ordered him detained, pending trial. Said charge stems from an accusation that Busy Signal fled the United States in 2002 so he could avoid an upcoming drug trial.

According to assistant U.S. attorney, Andrew Dunn, Busy Signal fled before his trial was set to begin in Minnesota, making him a fugitive for the past decade. The prominent artiste had been slapped with a pair of charges related to cocaine trafficking in February 2002.

Should Busy Signal be convicted on the count of absconding bail, he could face up to five years in prison.

This news comes a month after Busy was detained by members of the Fugitive Apprehension Team at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston after being deported from the United Kingdom, where he was initially arrested after being suspected of using false documentation.

Two days after his arrest in Jamaica, the Kingston Town singer waived his rights to challenge his extradition to the U.S. in order to fight the charge of failing to appear in court.

Though the cocaine charges remain active, the extradition request for Busy Signal only pertained to the accusation of absconding bail. Should American law enforcement officials want to prosecute Busy Signal on the drug-related charges, the U.S. and Jamaican governments would have to work out those terms as a result of treaties in place between both countries.

Jamaica to showcase first ever boxing party with Rocky876

With the growing, overwhelming success of Jamaica’s Contender series, the producers of this entertaining boxing show seek to capitalize off this success by holding the island’s first ever boxing party.

On Saturday July 7, boxing fans will get their first taste of such an unprecedented event as producers of The Contender will stage Rocky 876, which will take place at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston. Patrons will get a delectable combination of live ringside action while dancing to music provided by the likes of ZJ Chrome, Foota Hype and Miami-based disc jock, PalmerStylz while enjoying various mixes of Wray & Nephew rum, the main sponsors of Contender.

Fans will get an in-ring treat as Jamaica’s 2011 Middleweight Contender winner, Ricardo ‘Surgeon’ Smith takes on Derrick ‘Guts’ Spencer, a fighter from this season’s series who participated in a memorable match against Contender runner-up, Ramel ‘Sub Zero’ Lewis.

According to Contender producer, Sanjay Ramanand, this concept came about given that there was a strong social aspect developing as a result of the popular boxing series that needs to be capitalized on.

“When we looked at how the Contender was being received, we realized that there was a whole social component that was not being tapped into. People wanted to watch the boxing, but they also wanted to drink and dance and just enjoy themselves; so we thought why not mix the two concepts to create something that has never been done in Jamaica before,” he said.

Gates will open for the event at 8 p.m. as Rocky 876 provides a comforting environment for party-goers and sports fans alike as the party promises lots of fun and excitement for all involved.

Rocky 876 is sponsored by Wray and Nephew White Overproof Rum, Boom Energy Drink, Wata and ElectroTech Productions Ltd. Tickets for the event at JA$1,000 pre-sold, JA$1,500 at the gate and are available at LG Service Station (Dunrobin) as well as Just Call Couriers (876-355-7390).

Dancehall acts upset with genre’s exclusion from Jamaica 50 concert

There’s a growing uproar within the Dancehall community following confirmation that no artiste representing the popular Jamaican genre will be represented at an upcoming Jamaica 50 concert in England.

One of the major events to take place in honor of Jamaica’s 50th anniversary of events will be the Respect Jamaica 50th concert series, scheduled to take place concurrently with the 2012 Olympics in London. The series, conceptualized via AEG Live, runs from July 25-August 6 at the O2 Arena in London and features 50 Jamaica artistes, dub poets and bands.

However, one notable absence from the lineup is that of Dancehall as no artistes representing the prominent genre will feature on the Respect Jamaica 50th bill. This was confirmed during a recent interview on TVJ’s Entertainment Report by AEG Live president, Rob Hailett, who insisted that Dancehall music doesn’t necessarily work in every environment.

“I’m very pleased to see Reggae coming back with the reaffirmation of Morgan Heritage, young bands like Raging Fyah. I think it’s a good thing for the music globally because Dancehall doesn’t really work everywhere. I, personally, love it, but it’s not the kind of music that is consumer-friendly as a Raging Fyah who, to me, follow in the footsteps of Bob Marley,” Hailett said.

Could Buju Banton’s assets be seized?

Four days following the latest legal setback for embattled Dancehall/Reggae superstar, Buju Banton, speculation once again arises regarding whether or not the prominent entertainer’s assets will be seized.

On Thursday, an appeal made on behalf of Buju Banton was dismissed in a United States Court of Appeals in Georgia, thus upholding the artiste’s conviction on drug-related charges as well as his subsequent 10 year prison sentence regarding said charges. The Atlanta-based Circuit Court not only upheld Buju’s convictions on conspiracy to distribute cocaine and aiding and abetting a person’s use of a telephone to facilitate a drug crime but also agreed with the jury regarding his initial conviction on a gun-related charge which was thrown out by the presiding judge in Buju’s trial during February of last year.

Over the last four days since the appeal decision was handed down, many have speculated whether or not the United States Government will attempt to seize the Grammy-winning singjay’s assets.

Buju Banton to file for a new trial

Incarcerated Dancehall/Reggae megastar, Buju Banton will continue to battle for his freedom in spite of an appeal on his behalf to overturn his drug conviction being dismissed.

The Grammy-winning singjay will file for a new trial, which if successful, would mark his third since his initial arrest in Florida in December 2009. The announcement of this decision comes nearly two days after a United States appeals court in Atlanta, GA upheld Buju Banton’s conviction on drug-related charges in February of last year and subsequent 10 year sentence four months later.

Buju’s lead attorney, David Oscar Markus intimated that his client came to this decision after a meeting they had at a Miami-based federal prison, where the internationally acclaimed singer currently resides.

Vybz Kartel freed of drug charges

Internationally acclaimed Dancehall superstar, Adidja Palmer, more popularly known as Vybz Kartel can now call himself a free man, at least in one case as all drug-related charges against the deejay have been dropped.

The embattled entertainer was freed of ganja charges when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrates Court in Kingston this morning. The charges were dropped after it was deemed that there was no evidence offered by the prosecution in this case.

Presiding Resident Magistrate, Maxine Ellis reportedly stopped short of calling the prosecution’s case against Vybz Kartel malicious given that someone else had pleaded guilty to possessing a small quantity of marijuana that was found in a New Kingston hotel room where the highly regarded deejay and a group of people were arrested at last September.

Buju Banton’s appeal dismissed

Any lingering hopes that embattled Dancehall/Reggae superstar, Buju Banton would cop an early release from federal prison have been dashed as it’s been announced that an appeal to overturn the Grammy-winning singer’s conviction has been dismissed.

According to reports, the United States Court of Appeal for the 11th Circuit made the ruling during a hearing that took place on Thursday. In its ruling, the appeals court insisted that it agreed with the jury’s decision to convict Buju Banton of federal drug charges in February 2011 as he was found guilty of three charges including conspiracy to distribute cocaine and aiding and abetting a person’s use of a telephone to facilitate a drug crime.

The Circuit Court also agreed with the jury that Buju was guilty of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug crime. That charge had been dismissed by the trial judge after the verdict was read.

Buju’s legal team issued its appeal in the artiste’s case last December, citing entrapment as well as the possible violation of a constitutional right, dubbed the Speedy Trial Act.

Buju Banton was later sentenced to 10 years in federal prison last June. He initially spent his sentence at the Limestone County Detention Centre in Texas before being sent to a federal facility in Miami after several complaints of ill-treatment and concerns over Buju’s safety were raised.

His current release date is slated for February 1, 2019.

Nature’s Way Entertainment sends a message

Music is a part of our daily lives. We can’t imagine what life would be like without music, whether it is in the sounds of nature or commercial sounds, to some extent music influences our behavior, wherever we are and whatever we do.

Introducing Nature’s Way Entertainment Company, a new publishing, production and recording studio from out of St. Ann, Jamaica, who produces music that relates to real life situations that we find ourselves in, the kind of music that empowers the listener in a positive and uplifting manner.

Some of the hottest young artists of the moment along with established stars were selected to work on the newly released Hope Riddim compilation album featuring music from artists such as Alva, Zamunda, Mr. Melody, Whitney Wright, Thugsy Malone, Lutan Fyah, Spanner Banner, Richie Spice and the Hope Riddim that closes out the set of 10 tracks.

Producer, Garfield Cowan a/k/a Fada G, takes great pride in the lyrical contents of the songs chosen for the project, which all compliment the classical reggae vibes of the Hope Riddim that reflects Cowan’s deep rooted spirituality.

The genesis of Nature’s Way was the result of Fada G’s school mate/turned brother-in-law, Alva (Oliver Black), a burgeoning artiste with a number of singles released to his credit. He encouraged Fada G, whom he knew as a long time lover and collector of music, to record him and to start his own record label. Within a year, Nature’s Way was born and by the following year, Alva’s debut album, I’ve Got Life was released and is enjoying heavy rotation on radio in Jamaica, the U.S. and the U.K. Two videos have been produced for tracks from the album – St. Ann and a medley featuring Jah Keeps Me Safe And Sound and Jah We Pray To. They are currently airing on television and youtube. Meanwhile, Alva has been back in the studio recording new singles and performing on major shows in Jamaica such as the Kite Festival and GT Taylor Christmas Extravaganza.

Now, Nature’s Way’s sophomore project, the Hope Riddim, is moving forward; fulfilling the aspiration of the label’s objective with more quality roots, culture, reality and lovers’ music in traditional Reggae style. All releases are available physically as well as digitally on iTunes and other quality retailers, plus on their website at www.natureswayent.com the Hope Riddim is featured on the iTunes front page and getting remarkable response.

Check out this great music and more to come from Nature’s Way at your favorite store or online and you’ll naturally be doing fine.

Lady Saw distancing herself from fellow female deejays

Legendary Dancehall superstar, Lady Saw has put her female contemporaries on notice as the prominent deejay insists that she’s separating herself from other Dancehall divas following recent controversy.

Several weeks ago, Lady Saw gave an interview on TVJ’s Entertainment Report (ER) in which she allegedly stated that no current female Dancehall artiste could spend a day in her shoes. However, the artiste whose real name is Marion Hall vehemently denied that she said such a thing, insisting that producers of ER edited the interview in a way which made it seem like she was dissing her female compatriots, namely Spice and Tifa.

Following that interview, speculation arose regarding a possible beef between Lady Saw and Tifa which both denied. Spice later commented on the matter via TVJ’s Intense, saying that she was surprised by the alleged feud.

Now reflecting on recent events and surprised by the response by other female artistes regarding the interview, Lady Saw insists that she refuses to build personal relationships with fellow divas within the Dancehall industry.

Busy Signal extradited to the United States

Internationally acclaimed Dancehall/Reggae megastar, Busy Signal has officially been extradited to the United States as he prepares to face criminal charges in the state of Minnesota.

The prominent singjay, whose real name is Glendale Gordon was under heavy police custody on Tuesday as he was accompanied by a group of U.S. Marshals who had arrived in Jamaica a day prior. The highly acclaimed entertainer was shielded from the media before the official execution of his extradition shortly after 10 a.m. yesterday morning as he entered a private plane at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston which would carry him to Minnesota.

Busy Signal faces accusations of absconding bail in relation to a 2002 narcotics charge he faced in Minnesota. Though the singjay is reportedly wanted on several drug charges in the U.S., the nature of this extradition request regarded the charge of absconding bail only.

Late last month, Busy Signal waved his rights to fight extradition to the United States as he prepares to fight the aforementioned charge.

In the meantime, Busy Signal has kept to his promise of releasing new material while in custody as he recently unveiled a collaborative effort with Grammy-winning Reggae megastar, Damian ‘Junior Gong’ Marley entitled Kingston Town (Remix).  His most recent studio effort, Reggae Music Again continues to perform well on local and international charts as a track from the compilation dubbed Come Over currently hold the top spot on the New York Top 30 Reggae Chart.

Additionally, Busy Signal teamed with award-winning American rock band, No Doubt on the single, Push and Shove which will feature on the group’s upcoming studio album which will be unveiled this September.

Jamaican restaurants suddenly hot in Fort Myers

Jamaican restaurants suddenly hot in Fort Myers

For Joy Thompson, a plate of escovitch is home.

“You take the escovitch, the fish, and fry it real good,” said Thompson, a native of Jamaica’s Westmoreland Parish, her eyes searching the drab ceiling of her Jam-Rock Cafe as she remembered her family’s recipe.

“No cornmeal, nothing like that. Just really hot oil so it does not stick.”

She juliennes carrots and bell peppers and fiery scotch bonnets, soaking the vegetables in a mix of vinegar and sugar and then leaving them to marinate with the fried fish. Peas and rice come on the side. The peas — better known state-side as red kidney beans — are simmered with pig tails and various other salty bits of pork, low and slow until tender.

The dish captures island life on a plate, sending Thompson to her humble homeland with the dip of a fork.

Thompson and her husband opened Jam-Rock in a small corner store near the intersection of Cranford Avenue and Lafayette Street in Fort Myers in February 2011. It’s one of four Jamaican restaurants — along with Rudolph’s Place, the Caribbean Dutch Pot and C&J Double Delights — to open in Fort Myers in the last 18 months.

The restaurants are hardly fancy. Few offer seating. Where it is available it is simple and practical. Their real amenities are in the talented hands of their cooks and chefs. People who can ply flavor from humble, tough cuts of meat and basic vegetables.

When Thompson started Jam-Rock, she had been in the U.S. for just less than a year. Despite an extensive education in Jamaica, her job opportunities here were limited.

“I could have worked at Popeye’s or something like that, but this is what I know,” Thompson said. “Jamaicans can really cook. We can really t’row down!”

The number of Jamaicans living in the U.S. has been on a steady rise, from about 550,000 in 2000 to more than 650,000 today, according to data from migrationinformation.org. Jamaican immigrants are concentrated in New York and Florida, with many large Jamaican communities around Fort Lauderdale.

Busy Signal to be handed over to U.S officials today

Embattled Dancehall/Reggae superstar, Glendale Goshia Gordon, more popularly known as Busy Signal will be handed over to United States law enforcement officials today in his ongoing extradition case.

The prominent singjay, who faces criminal charges in the state of Minnesota, will be escorted there this afternoon by a team of U.S Marshals. According to the Jamaica Gleaner, a law enforcement official close to the situation revealed that a private plane landed on Monday afternoon at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, which Busy Signal will board en route to America.

Busy Signal was arrested by members of the Fugitive Apprehension Team on May 21 after the internationally acclaimed entertainer was deported from the United Kingdom. The singjay, known for classics such as These Are The Days and Step Out, faces extradition in relation to absconding bail after he allegedly failed to appear before the courts to answer a narcotics offence that he faced in 2002.

Busy Signal recently waived his rights to challenge said extradition and has been in police custody since the extradition warrant was initially executed.
