Vybz Kartel to stand trial in November regarding conspiracy case

Embattled Dancehall superstar, Vybz Kartel faces a third trial date within a two week span as the prominent deejay faces a mid-November court appearance regarding obstruction of justice related charges.

With his murder trials set to begin on October 29 and November 5 respectively, Kartel was ordered to appear in court in November 12 where he faces a charge of perverting the course of justice. The trial was initially set to begin on Wednesday inside the Corporate Area Resident Magistrates Court in Kingston, but got pushed back due to the absence of the presiding judge as well as the non-disclosure of statements to the defense.

Kartel’s long-time protégé, Vanessa ‘Gaza Slim’ Saddler and studio engineer, Andre ‘Pim Pim’ Henry are co-accused of perverting the court of justice in the matter. Both Saddler and Henry were granted bail extensions while Kartel was remanded into police custody.

Law enforcement officials slapped the charge on Kartel and his associates two months after Gaza Slim filed a police report at the Constant Spring Police Station, claiming that she had been robbed and gun-butted by Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams in Havendale, St. Andrew. Gaza Slim filed the report on October 29, five days after Vybz Kartel copped a murder charge as he and three other men are accused of murdering Williams at a Havendale residence last summer.

Kartel is slated to stand trial in the Clive Williams murder case on November 5.

Dynamic Duo RDX Tours Europe And Represents For Jamaica!

Get the Flash Player to see the wordTube Media Player.

While the world was tuned to London for the 2012 Olympic Games, Dancehall Reggae Duo RDX was busy touring Europe and representing Jamaica as it celebrated 50 years of Independence.

The dynamic duo held back nothing as they gave their European fans an unforgettable performance making them Jamaicans not by nationality but by the cultural vibe that has resonated across the world over the years.

RDX documented their journey which will be done in a series to give their fans video clips, pictures and personal thoughts of the whole experience as they toured Europe and made Jamaica & themselves proud.

The following is an excerpt from the continuing story documenting the journey of Dancehall/Reggae duo RDX as they invite us on the adventure of their 2012 European Summer Tour.

Pt. 1 THE ITALIAN JOB!

“RDX kicked off their much heralded Summer Tour in Europe at Termoli in Italy with a typical RDX-charged performance in front of a bumber hard core Dancehall crowd. They were joined on stage by local dancers who felt a sense of honor to be sharing the stage with the artiste who have brought so many dancers to the forefront.
After driving for three hours to catch a plane in Napoli to their next destination, the infamous Sicily island, RDX got a glance of the various vineyards with outstretched arms across the Italian countryside with a dormant volcano in the back drop.
On arrival in Sicily, home of the Italian mafia, RDX were shown sights of Mt. Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano, enjoyed wines and of course… wood oven baked pizza!

The show in the night in Rossolini erupted with excitement as RDX ran out to rock the full house of eager Dancehall fans. They couldn’t get enough of the energetic duo who bounced across the small platform in there sleek summer wear, that typified the season.
And it was from the venue to the airport for the flight to the next engagement in Calemera, near Lecce in Italy.

One of Lecce’s famous landmark is the “Arena”, a former place that housed the Gladiators of old, and RDX were reminiscent of that era wielding hit after hit, cutting thru the warm Italian night as the blade of a gladiators’ sword!

It was a huge surprise when RDX arrived in Lisbon, Portugal at 19:00 (7pm) only to be told they were to drive approximately three hours to the venue in Sudoeste and go straight on stage, little did they know an even bigger surprise awaited.

Delomar: “The experience of touring Europe is always a special occasion especially for RDX who are Dancehall artiste. Dancehall is growing in this region and us here giving a positive representation can only be a good thing for the music & RDX.”

Renigade“We dida few festivals this time around so that is an eye-opening experience for us. And us performing on festivals in relatively new markets like Poland and Czec Republic makes us proud of the reach of our music”.

Vybz Kartel questions loyalty of top ‘Gaza’ artistes

As if there wasn’t enough drama resulting from the recent dissolution of the Portmore Empire, now the group’s former leader has thrown more gasoline on the proverbial fire with a stern rebuking of his ex-protégés.

According to several reports, incarcerated Dancehall superstar and former Empire founder, Vybz Kartel released a damning statement against his former group mates on Thursday, insinuating that prominent protégés, Popcaan and Tommy Lee are no longer committed to the ‘Gaza’ cause, labeling both artistes as ‘opportunists.’

The statement was reportedly issued through ex-Empire singer, Vanessa ‘Gaza Slim’ Saddler, who sent said statement to Anthony Miller of TVJ’s Entertainment Report.

The alleged statement reads, “I just want u to let the people know that all a dem runnin’ aroun’ sayin’ ‘Gaza, Gaza’ are not real. Before I came here we were ‘good.’ No animosity, but within a week of my arrest, they started giving other people managerial and booking positions. But where were these people when I was building their careers? When I was investing time and money to transform them from nobody to somebody? They are opportunists and fake. I’m not surprised because this is Dancehall and I have no problem with them making their money. But I jus’ don’t want them to be all over the place exploiting a movement that I built with blood sweat and tears when they and I know they aren’t real. I want them to stop. The only two loyal people are Slim and Sheba (the girls) and maybe it’s because they haven’t fully realized their potential.”

This news comes several weeks after back and forth exchanges between Popcaan and former Empire singjay, Gaza Slim following a statement made by the former deejay address his status within the ‘Gaza’ as well as relationship with Vybz Kartel.

Furthermore, reports suggest that Vybz Kartel wanted a sizeable portion of Tommy Lee’s booking and publishing rights in an effort to exert more control over the Some Bwoy singer’s career while also implying that Popcaan owes ‘Di Teacha’ money in relation to bookings fees.

Kartel has publicly lashed out against former protégés before, doing so after ex-members like Black Ryno and Lisa Hyper left the Portmore Empire. The once dominant super group has also lost members such as Jahvinci, Kym Hamilton, co-founder, Deva Bratt and former Empire producer, Ainsley ‘Notnice’ Morris.

In a swift response to Kartel’s statement, Lisa Hyper disputed claims made by the self-professed ‘Worl’ Boss,’ intimating during an interview with one876entertainment.com that ‘Di Teacha’ should never take full credit for the growing ‘Gaza’ movement.

“Who is him fi talk bout loyalty? Him not even loyal to him (expletive) self. Him right fi say ah only dem two de, Sheba and Slim ah the most loyal to him because dem ah de two foolest people pon the Gaza, dem not even know what a split sheet is, dem nuh know nothing bout the business. Kartel caan stop nobody from say Gaza, Gaza belong to everybody now, this is a movement, Gaza mean fight for what you believe in and Kartel caan tek Gaza from nobody, Popcaan and Tommy Lee caan siddown and wait pon him fi come out, and further, Gaza belong to everybody, it bigger than Adidja Palmer, it bigga than me, it bigga than everybody who help start it. Mi breathe Gaza, mi bleed Gaza, Gaza for life,” she said.

More details of this ongoing saga will emerge on TVJ’s Entertainment Report this Friday night featuring Kartel’s statement as well as reaction from the aforementioned Tommy Lee, who reportedly expresses his loyalty to the ‘Gaza’ in his interview with ER, despite his mentor’s comments.

Street Vybz Rum back on shelves

After months off local shelves, the Street Vybz Rum brand has been officially re-introduced to the Jamaican market following a truce struck between the product’s high profile creators.

Prominent American businessman, Corey Todd and embattled Dancehall superstar, Vybz Kartel recently announced the restoration of their business partnership after a very public falling out that took place in May of last year. With their resolution came the announcement that Kartel and Todd would bring back to popular Street Vybz Rum brand that initially debuted in 2009.

According to Todd, the overwhelming demand for Street Vybz Rum became too difficult to ignore, thus prompting he and Kartel to once again supply the liquor brand. Despite Street Vybz being off the market for several months, Todd believes that the product will once again find favor with customers given that it revolutionized the local rum market for music lovers while intimating that new flavors will be added to diversify the brand as he promotes it on an international scale.

However, a stumbling block does exist regarding the marketing of Street Vybz Rum as Vybz Kartel remains incarcerated while awaiting trial in a pair of murder cases later this year. But, according to Todd, some of Kartel’s esteemed protégés, most notably Tommy Lee, will help to promote Street Vybz until its focal point cops freedom.

While Street Vybz Rum was shelved, Todd had been promoting Yaad Swag, a rum brand that he created while using artistes such as Beenie Man, Khago and Aidonia to market the product.

However, with Street Vybz returning, Todd stated that his Yaad Swag project has been discontinued.

Bogle inspires a generation: A look at Jamaica’s most influential dancers

48 years ago yesterday, one of Dancehall’s patriarchs was born as Gerald ‘Bogle’ Levy began his journey towards becoming Jamaica’s most decorated dancer.

Though controversy surrounded his life, Bogle graced the world with his slick moves, undeterred ego as well as an ability to wow a crowd at every turn with his feet. The works of Bogle as well as the original Dancehall Queen, Carlene (who deserves a very honorable mention for this list) works are instrumental in creating a clear avenue for Dancehall to travel through as their knack for entertaining audiences sparked a movement that has gradually grown since they rose to stardom in the early 90s.

With several dance crews including Shady Squad, Ravers Clavers, Dance Xpressionz and Sample Six infiltrating sessions and events worldwide, Bogle also paved the way for many individual talents to continue carrying out his work, even after his untimely death in 2005.

Taking that fact into consideration here are nine other individual dancers who’ve shaped the foundation of Dancehall music and who are deserving of credit for sparking interest within the genre in their own ways.

10. Kim Versatile: Known for her appearances in videos such as Hot Like We (Ce’Cile) and Gallis (Mr. Vegas), Kimiko ‘Kim Versatile’ Miller hasn’t looked back since earning a runner-up spot on the popular Dancing Dynamites show in 2007. Hailing as an Edna Manley College and Ardenne High School alumnus, Kim Versatile has been leading the new wave of dancers in recent years and living up to her moniker through a borage of intriguing costumes as well as her undeniable flexibility.

A popular choreographer in her own right, Kim Versatile boasts a very accomplished resume’, working with several other Dancehall/Reggae superstars such as Vybz Kartel, Voicemail, Cherine Anderson, Beres Hammond and rap superstar, Sean Kingston to name a few. With so many accomplishments at such a young age, Kim Versatile’s potential continues to skyrocket.

9. Keiva The Diva: Perhaps the first female dancer to gain mainstream recognition within Dancehall circles was Keiva ‘The Diva’ Hibbert; popping on several television screens when she appeared in Elephant Man’s classic video for Log On. Keiva became a fixture in Elephant Man’s videos and, despite boasting a very slim figure, her range in motion made her a must-see dancer in the early 2000s, culminating in winning the title of Dancehall Queen in 2003

Keiva has seemingly shied away from the spotlight ever since word broke in 2009 that she was pregnant. However, motherhood hasn’t stopped Keiva from performing and has even tested recording waters.

8. Ice – Though branded as a troublemaker throughout his career, no one could question Ice as a vaunted dancer.

Ice created several dance moves while a member of the Black Roses Crew, where Bogle also featured. Despite a somewhat marked reputation, Ice became famous for inventing the Gully Creepa dance in 2008, a move that Usain Bolt also popularized during his exploits in Beijing.

As a result, big things seemed in store for Ice’s career. However, like Bogle and Black Roses founder, Willie Haggart before him, Ice was gunned down as he hung out on Boxing Day at a bar in Kingston, preventing him from reaching his full potential as an elite dancer.

‘Havana Sunset’ shines light on Canadian Dancehall-Reggae campaign

Emerging public relations firm, YuhSeeYou Entertainment and Publicity has decided to shed light on a brand new campaign they have created that’s sure to shed light on the Canadian Dancehall/Reggae market.

YuhSeeYou recently announced the impending launch of their new Dancehall and Reggae for Canada campaign, created to successfully promote the talent pool that exists within Canada as it pertains to Jamaica’s most prominent genres, Reggae and Dancehall. The Dancehall and Reggae for Canada campaign involves some of music’s most influential figures as highly regarded music distributor, Johnny Wonder and award-winning radio disc jock, Carrie Mullings as they seek to provide Canadian-based Dancehall/Reggae artistes greater outlets to promote their music.

According to YuhSeeYou founder, Reeva Proctor, the campaign came about as her PR firm worked with several of Canada’s promising Dancehall/Reggae artistes and noticed the appeal that these entertainers garnered as a result of their growing success.

For Proctor, the Dancehall and Reggae for Canada campaign hails as an ideal opportunity for Dancehall and Reggae who’re based in the North American country to earn mainstream success worldwide despite not residing in the country where these genres were originated.

“Both Reggae and Dancehall have opportunities here in Canada. It’s proven every year at events such as Jamaica Day Celebrations across our country and the two successful International Reggae Festivals that are held every year in Calgary and Montreal,” Proctor says.

“I don’t believe the saying that an artist must “Buss” in Jamaica before they can reach the international market. Europe and the U.K prove this to us time and time again. There is a Market for Reggae and Dancehall outside of Jamaica. Labels such as Push a Yute and Born Free Records have shown us that with proper P.R and Marketing that Jamaican music can make an impact no matter where you are from. Europe’s Industry Professionals excel in all areas of the industry such as promotion, public relations, production and media.”

In coordination with the Dancehall and Reggae for Canada campaign’s main objective, YuhSeeYou has signed off on the first official Riddim on behalf of this initiative, dubbed the Havana Sunset Riddim.

Havana Sunset features many of the aforementioned Dancehall/Reggae talents flourishing in Canada such as Alty-B, Chuxstar, Ebony Royal, Eyesus, Faze, Jah Cube, Tiffie and many others while also featuring emerging young stars based in Jamaica such as Richie Loop, Blak Diamon, Pretti Kitti and Gaza Maxwell.

Additionally, the Havana Sunset Riddim featured contributions from some of Dancehall and Reggae music’s emerging producers as the project was first built by Kimichi Records hit maker, Dane Sortie while being mixed by Canadian based label, Smoke Shop Productions while also featuring UIM Records producer, Anju Blaxx, who worked on Blak Diamon’s single for the compilation.

The Havana Sunset Riddim will be unofficially released on August 30 before being distributed in mid-September by Johnny Wonder and his 21st Hapilos outlet.

YuhSeeYou Entertainment and Publicity previously released the Wakefield Riddim, a compilation featuring many of Dancehall’s elite such as Spice, Voicemail and Richie Loops while also showcasing Blak Diamon and Toronto-based Dancehall artiste, Sampaloo.

Montreal International Reggae Festival Closes the 2012 Season with a Sold Out Audience!

The 2012 Montreal International Reggae Festival season comes to an end on a high note, seeing a sold out audience pack the Old Port for 3 days of sweet Reggae and Dancehall from the Caribbean’s best artists.

Fans were given a variety of talent and themes to enjoy.  Night one, deemed Dancehall night, featured Cham and his Wife O.  Canada’s #1 DJ, DJ Poirier, who also hails from Montreal, rocked the crowd with a combination of musical selections from Shabba Ranks, General Degree and Busy Signal.  Joining the veteran DJ on stage was Juno Nominee Face-T who slick Dancehall delivery had the audience chanting for more, as did the fiery presentation and performance of Fiya Lion who had patrons form the Usain Bolt pose during his performance.

The official after party was enjoyed by Sound Clash diehards who backed EB Lounge to witness Rootsman Sound from Toronto, Showtime from New York and hometown favorite Little Thunder battle each other for the favour of the crowd.  Toronto’s Rootsman Sound won the Clash taking all three rounds played.

Night two featured Konshens, whose chart topping singles “Gyal Ah Bubble,” “Ah So Mih Tan,” and “Good Girl Gone Bad” earned the screams and cheers from his adoring female fans, and fire salutes from the male fans in attendance.  Another crowd pleaser was Christopher Martin who had to wheel up his sizzling song “Cheaters Prayer” several times, and the newest Dancehall sensation, Popcaan worked the stage and the crowd into a frenzy.  Hotta Maestro also touched the crowd prior to Assassin who’s moving performance called for encore’s.

Night three, Reggae night, featured Romain Virgo and his soul moving song “Who Feels it Knows it” had the audience singing along with him.  Tarrus Riley, backed by Ruff Kut band gave fans so much of what they wanted to hear, tweets about Mr. Singy Singy were sent the moment he was announced to be at the venue to the end of his set.  Fans knew every word to every song, and acted as his backing choir when he performed “Stay With You” which was truly moving.

Froggy Madd Squad had the audience in festive spirits, opening for Jimmy Cliff!  His set include Reggae anthems that had lighters and flags in the air! Remembering the milestone of Jamaica’s 50th year of Independence from Great Britain, the Madd Squads leader included rare Festival music from his music library, impressing fans both mature and young!

Undoubtedly, Jimmy Cliff was the shining crescendo to an already perfect Festival.  Donned in his red green and gold scarf and leather suit, the legend and Order of Merit holder gave Montreal his heart and soul as he performed his hits that made him famous (“Many Rivers to Cross,” “Reggae Nights” and “Miss Jamaica”) as well as songs from his new album recently released.

Backed by his band, Jimmy reminded all of the years he’s put into the industry, and his undeniable role in shaping the path that others have followed.  He is truly a legend!

Look out for the Montreal International Reggae Festival 2013 where Eric Blagrove, the Festival’s producer, celebrates 10 years with surprises and feature presentations!
