Vybz Kartel and Elephant Man have trials postponed

Two of Dancehall’s most coveted entertainers will have to wait a while to have their days in court to answer serious charges they stand accused of.

One of the highly anticipated murder trials involving Dancehall superstar, Adidja ‘Vybz Kartel’ Palmer has been postponed until December 3 of this year.

Kartel was due to answer charges pertaining the July 2011 killing of St. Catherine businessman, Barrington ‘Bossie’ Burton on Monday. However, the matter was put off when the self-professed ‘Worl’ Boss’ appeared inside the Corporate Area Resident Magistrates Court in Kingston yesterday after one of his defense attorneys, Cristian Tavares-Finson revealed that prosecutors in the murder case indicated that they weren’t ready.

Kartel faces charges of murder, conspiracy to murder and illegal possession of a firearm in the Barrington ‘Bossie’ Burton and was granted JA$3 million bail in the matter earlier this year. However, the former Portmore Empire leader cannot post that bail as he remains in custody for murder and obstruction of justice related charges pertaining to the killing of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams in August 2011.

Vybz Kartel will stand trial alongside four other men on November 5 with regards to the murder case. Seven days later, ‘Di Teacha’ will return to court to begin his conspiracy trial in which he, Vanessa ‘Gaza Slim’ Saddler and Andre ‘Pim Pim’ Henry are accused of attempting to pervert the course of justice in the Williams case.

Meanwhile, fellow Dancehall superstar, Oneil ‘Elephant Man’ Bryan has been issued a new court date in his ongoing rape case as the prominent deejay is scheduled for a February 11, 2013 appearance.

Like Kartel, Elephant Man appeared inside the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on Monday where he was due to answer to charges of rape and sexual assault stemming from an alleged incident this past January involving a 31-year-old woman at his St. Andrew home. However, the Pon Di River singer’s case was reportedly put off due to an outstanding forensic report, amongst other things.

Elephant Man will remain on JA$400,000 bail until the February date. The embattled deejay originally posted said bail in February.

Buju Banton’s sentencing postponed, entertainer issues message to fans

Embattled Dancehall superstar, Mark Myrie, more popularly known as Buju Banton will have to wait a while longer to know his fate regarding sentencing on a gun charge.

The sentencing on said gun charge in Buju Banton’s ongoing drug trial was postponed when the Grammy-winning entertainer appeared in Sam M Gibbons Federal Court in Tampa, Florida on Tuesday morning. The hearing was put off on the request of Buju’s lawyer, Chokwe Lumumba, amidst an application for an investigation he filed earlier this month, alleging juror misconduct during the singjay’s drug trial in February 2011. No new date has been set for Buju’s sentencing.

Terri Wright, a juror in Buju drug trial last year, revealed in an interview with the New Times Broward that she researched aspects of the entertainer’s case to gauge a greater understanding of the matter before deliberation. Though Wright insisted that it had no bearing on her final decision, reports surfaced that her research could constitute as a violation of court orders, thus, possibly sparking a mistrial in Buju’s case.

ETANA UNLEASHES REGGAE

Etana, the Jamaican-born, Miami-raised songstress, returns with her brand new digital-only EP Reggae on November 13th with VP Records. The 3-song preview off her upcoming studio album Better Tomorrow will give fans a taste of what is to come in February 2013. The entire set is produced by Shane Brown with Stanley “Rellee” Hayden co-creating the title track.

The charismatic singer, songwriter and performer incorporates elements of reggae, soul and pop into her captivating postmodern sound that tackles real life experiences. Etana’s unabashed romanticism shines on the soulful sway of “Reggae” and the r&b tinged “4 Play 2 Love (Start Over)” about her torn feelings of two lovers. The spine-chilling single “Better Tomorrow” addresses the atrocities of children in poverty-stricken communities, while instilling optimism for brighter days. Etana’s lyrical depth and revolutionary thought continue to impress and inspire her audience.

With a baby on the way, new EP and album in the works, Etana is in a place in her life where she looks forward to a promising future. She expands upon her 2010 sophomore album Free Expressions, which won praise for the being “a rarity: music that sermonizes, yet still sweetly serenades,” according to NPR. The anticipated album Better Tomorrow and EP Reggaeexpress a similar sentiment, while offering new-found wisdom and clarity. These releases also follow her 2008 critical acclaimed debut The Strong One, which featured massive hits “Warrior Love,” “Roots” “I’m Not Afraid,” “Blessings” and “Wrong Address” that topped reggae charts in The Caribbean, England and United States. During this period, Etana was nominated for Best New Reggae Artist at MOBO Awards and awarded Best Female Vocalist at both the Excellence in Music & Entertainment (EME) Awards and IRIE FM Radio Awards as well as the Best Solo Female Reggae Vocalist at the 1st annual Reggae Academy Awards. Vibe Magazine claimed she had already “established herself as a formidable performer and songwriter whose music and reputation precedes her.”

Reggae Track Listing:

  1. Reggae
  2. Better Tomorrow
  3. 4 Play 2 Love (Start Over)

To make matters worse, the woman, who reportedly lives down the road from Lady Saw, was impregnated by John John.

Lady Saw initially took the news hard, concerning fans by tweeting messages earlier this month such as “Looking out from my balcony thinking to myself NO NOT AGAIN,” as well as “I knew it but was only waiting to confirm now it now it is confirm so where do I go from here.” However, after some time to think, Lady Saw decided to stick by her producer boyfriend despite yet another case of infidelity, telling IRIE FM in a radio interview late last week that she won’t allow anyone to break up her relationship with John John.

Chris Gayle to record debut single

Following in the footsteps of teammate, Dwayne Bravo, fellow West Indies cricketer, Chris Gayle will step into the recording booth as he plans his first single.

Just weeks after shocking the cricket world by leading the West Indies to the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 title in Sri Lanka, Gayle will add musician to his list of titles as he will record his debut single to promote a new dance named after him, called the Chris Gayle Cover Drive. The dance was crafted by Jamaican dancer, Zinga after Chris Gayle continuously did the overwhelmingly popular, Gangnam Style dance during many of the West Indies’ matches throughout the tournament.

This comes over a year after Bravo recorded a single alongside Dancehall legend, Beenie Man and Guyanese singer entitled Badman Soca. That was accompanied by a track that Bravo and Beenie Man did alongside Guyanese singer, Timeka Marshall dubbed Beenie Man & Bravo.

Dancehall star, QQ will feature on Gayle’s track, which will be unveiled in November. Gayle will reportedly record his part of the song before heading with his West Indies teammates for an upcoming series of matches in Bangladesh. Additionally, fans can expect accompanying visuals for the single once Gayle returns to Jamaica as the video will feature many of Gayle’s teammates, including Marlon Samuels, Daren Powell, Wavell Hinds and the aforementioned Dwayne Bravo.

Zinga revealed that he’s currently creating dance moves in honor of Gayle’s teammates as he’s looking to craft a move dubbed Wave Dem for Wavell Hinds as well as Nah Laugh Wid Dem for Marlon Samuels.

Gayle’s exuberant renditions of Gangnam Style made him a YouTube sensation while in Sri Lanka as he paid homage to the dance move that has dominated the world scene since its unveiling last month. Gangnam Style, a song and move created by South Korean rapper, Psy has become one of this year’s biggest crazes, with the accompanying video accumulating a record-shattering 500 million views on YouTube.

Several Dancehall artistes have hitched on to this trendy dance as veteran deejay, Mega Banton went viral last month with his own rendition of Gangnam Style with Gangnam Badman Style. Elephant Man followed that up two weeks ago with his remix of the track, dubbed Badman Style.

Mojo Morgan’s Personal Life Takes A Toll On His Physical Health

Mojo Morgan’s Personal Life Takes A Toll On His Physical Health

Florida, USA (Mpr Consulting/Shuzzr PR) - Morgan’s Heritage youngest band member Mojo Morgan has given his family and fans quite a scare after he fell critically ill and consequently was admitted at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center in Aventura, Florida.

Statement from Mojo Morgan:

They say when your on your last, you will have all the time in the world to reflect. With the grace and mercy of the most high and all the support from family and friends, it has never become more clearer that “New Dawn” symbolizes a rebirth not only for it’s listeners but also for me personally.

After just coming out of a bitter breakup over the last 1 1/2 years – of which I take full responsibility for with the mother of all of my children except my last – it has finally taken it’s toll on my physical health. Starting a new family, promoting my new single “New Dawn” and the recently released “The Return” EP from Morgan Heritage (MH) and currently in the studio finishing both the new MH studio album and my solo debut full length album, they have all added their share of mental stress.

My spiritual strength is for sure intact. The father above has shown me that when he is for us, no one can be against us. If we put all our trust in him, all will be well with us. I’m grateful because he has provided me with a strong woman to support me during this transitional phase of my life. The love of all my children along with my entire group and father has been my most vigilant reinforcement.

To the world I send my never ending thanks and love for all the prayer, love and support that has been pouring in from all directions. It’s a new dawn; It’s a new day; It’s a new life for me. And i’m on my way once again to being able to say I’m 100% feeling good.

Rasta Love, Rasta Rock

Doctors have concluded that Mojo contracted a viral infection. They were unable to narrow it down due to the severity of his condition when admitted, but his symptoms were likened to that of Viral Meningitis. He was therefore treated rigorously for this infection. Though his blood pressure surged due to this infection, all his vitals have since been normalized. A few minor results are still pending but they expect Mojo to be released any day now.

Mojo Morgan will be joining his siblings as Morgan Heritage hits the stage on November 2nd at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. Thereafter Mojo will be back on the promotional trail spreading the spirit and essence of Nina Simone with the “New dawn” single featuring his brother Peetah Morgan. He admits that he chose the song wanting to introduce the legendary R&B Jazz vocalist Nina Simone to a new generation to echo the sentiments that no matter life’s tribulations, each new day brings hope, a renewed faith and a chance to try again..

The single blends Reggae, Jazz, Pop and R&B to satisfy all music lovers. New Dawn” feat Peetah Morgan is available for free download for a limited time at www.Facebook.com/GotMojoMorgan

Man accused of killing Captain Barkey commits suicide

More drama has unfolded in the aftermath following the murder of Dancehall star,Wayne ‘Captain Barkey’ Hamilton as his alleged killer is now dead.

Joseph Kernizan, the man accused of killing Hamilton and his female companion, Tracy Bennett outside a New York motel on Saturday committed suicide on Tuesday inside a Florida-based apartment, according to New York law enforcement officials. According to several New York based publication, the 42-year-old Kernizan shot himself in the head as police tried to enter the apartment in an effort to arrest him.

New York Police Department (NYPD) officials tracked down Kernizan with the help of federal marshals and the Miami police, according to law enforcement officials, as they found him at a two-story, four-family house in Miami where the alleged killer had stayed since the killing.

After police ordered residents of the apartment to evacuate, Kernizan tried to escape, but after seeing police inside, he retreated and shot himself before a Bronx Felony Squad discovered and identified the body.

Kernizan hailed as Tracy Bennett’s ex-boyfriend as the former couple had two children. However, Bennett had reportedly been dating Captain Barkey for the last five years, despite the fact that the veteran deejay had a wife.

Captain Barkey reportedly received death threats from Kernizan prior to his murder and had been warned by long-time friend and musical partner, Wickerman to disassociate himself from Bennett considering the possible risks and ramifications.

Captain Barkey was renowned within the Jamaican music community for singles like Go Go Wine and Bun Fi Bun. His body will reportedly be flown to Jamaica in a few weeks and will be buried in Portmore, St. Catherine.

With so many versions of the Bible available for all to read, God’s word will now be relayed to the masses in a new form, Jamaican patois.

Di Jamiekan Nyuu Testiment, a version of the Bible’s New Testament versed in Jamaican dialect, was recently launched at the Jamaican High Commission in the United Kingdom on October 9. Di Jamiekan Nyuu Testiment features many of the New Testament’s most captivating stories, detailing Jesus’ life and the Lord’s Prayer in Jamaican patois, with English translations available beside each verse.

The launch garnered exciting and humorous reactions from Jamaicans living the United Kingdom and has reportedly received a positive reception in the United Kingdom as well as back home.

According to Rev. Courtney Stewart, who is responsible for the English translation of this patois-theme bible stated that given the strong ties between Jamaica and the U.K. as well as the island’s 50th year of independence this year, it was ideal way to celebrate Jamaica’s dialect on an wider scale.

The patois version of the New Testament was approved in a partnership between The Bible Society of the West Indies and the United Kingdom’s Bible Society. Additionally, it results from a 20-year collaboration between translators from the Bible Society of the West Indies, the Department of Linguistics at the University of the West Indies (UWI) and highly acclaimed theological institutions in the island

According to her publicist Karl Durrant “things look great for Keda right now as her first single is already buzzing on radio and in the streets not to mention the fact she has one of the hottest artistes in dancehall in her corner and she is stunning, so overall I see big things for her in the very near future” Karl Durrant stated.

Born Rickeda Charda Taylor, this gem of an artiste graced the earth with her alluring presence for the first time in Brooklyn New York City in the process becoming the eighth child of her Jamaican parents. Her family later relocated to Orlando Florida where she completed high school after which she went on to study the business of music at Seminole College of Florida. Growing up in such a large family made Keda into a family oriented person as growing up she could always count on her close knit family for support in all her endeavors so it came as no surprise to her that her family gave her their unconditional support to pursue her passion (music) as a career after college.

In her own words Keda says, her family recognized from an early age that music fueled her existence and as such they always volunteered to be her first audience and provided honest and insightful feedback which aided her development as an artiste. Despite growing up in the United States, Reggae/Dancehall music was always a part of her life and as such her early musical influences were a melting pot of sounds which included Lady Saw, Bob Marley, and Mary J Blige while her present influences are Vybz Kartel, Jahvinci and Tommy Lee Sparta who is also her good friend and mentor.

Currently Keda Sparta is working closely with Heavy D Promotions while the video for the single will be shot in a few days in various locations across Kingston.

Singing Melody’s Reggae’s Influence on the 2012 US Presidential Election

Politics has always influenced Reggae music.  As the genre emerged over the years, artists used their voices as a vehicle in support of, or to speak out against issues originating from the political arena.

Singing Melody, arguably one of the most celebrated Reggae artists, lends his voice to the upcoming US Presidential election, and in support of the political campaign of Barack Obama.

Participating in political discussions, canvassing, and being a poll station volunteer in South Florida, Singing Melody is actively in support of the Obama administration.  “If we don’t take a stand and become active in the upcoming election, decisions will be made for us, and I don’t think we’ll like what those decisions are” said Melody from Jamaica ahead of his departure for South Florida where he’ll work from a campaign office and drive elderly voters to the polls.  “What is encouraging is to see how many people from the Caribbean, now living in the US, are involved in this process.  We will make the difference.”

As a resident of Jamaica and South Florida, Singing Melody sees the impact of the political process on his neighbours, and Floridians in general.  “This election doesn’t just affect Americans, it affects all countries around the world.  I haven’t heard Romney mention anything about relations with Jamaica and the Caribbean, yet the Caribbean has been a focus to the Obama administration.”

In a document entitled ‘Latin America and the Caribbean:  U.S. Policy and Key Issues for Congress in 2012,’ the Obama administration lays out its focus for the Latin and Caribbean region by stating:  “Current U.S. policy toward the region is focused on four priorities: promoting economic and social opportunity; ensuring citizen security; strengthening effective democratic institutions; and securing a clean energy future. There has been substantial continuity in U.S. policy toward the region under the Obama Administration, which has pursued some of the same basic policy approaches as the Bush Administration. Nevertheless, the Obama Administration has made several significant policy changes, including an overall emphasis on partnership and shared responsibility.”

Americans take to the polls on Tuesday November 6th, 2012 where they have the option to vote for Republican candidate Mitt Romney or re-elect President Barack Obama who is a Democrat.

Upcoming for Singing Melody includes a Mini U.S. Tour including performances with Beenie Man in November, Christmas in Jamaica and New Years Eve in New York.  In early 2013, Melody hits Europe and Japan.  More details on those and other events coming soon!
