Junior Kelly Back In Jamaica After Successful Fall European Tour.

Reggae singer Junior Kelly is back home in Jamaica after a very successful fall European tour, which kicked off last October in Amiens, France. Even hurricane Sandy hitting Jamaica, weather conditions grounding flights and closing the Island airports couldn’t put a damper on him. He remained in high spirit and great energy.

Kelly departed as soon as the country airport in Montego Bay reopened on the Thursday, October 25 late evening right before his Friday, October 26 performance. With no time to spare as he landed, Junior Kelly was up for his meet and greet, press and straight to his scheduled performance.

Full of energy, good form and positively great vibes, Junior delivered his hits to the delight of eager fans. Taking the crowd on a melodic musical journey with classic songs such as “Love So Nice” to his latest hit “Been There” video. The tour took Kelly and his band through the Netherlands, France, Austria, Switzerland and Italy.

Reflecting on his tour Junior stated, “The energy and vibe i received from the fans during this tour was truly amazing and humbling and it was heart warming to see that people out there are still crying out for conscious music, my music, Reggae music”

“Its really beautiful to see three generations of people coming out to my concerts and enjoying and loving Reggae music, so i know it will live on”

“I really appreciate the fact that i am able to perform every day of the week and the fans came out in their numbers every night to listen to Reggae music, even in these harsh economic times when buying a concert ticket is so hard. These die-hearted fans in Europe are mainly from the poorer class of society and they have so many other choices in terms of artistes or food or paying a bill, but they come out because they see me as one of the young roots artistes whose messages make them feel good and one that is going to stand the test of time. It is truly a blessing and an honor.”

Bounty Killer says no to STING

Any hope that Dancehall superstar, Bounty Killer will perform at STING 2012 seems all but dashed after the ‘War Lord’ confirmed his intention to skip the popular stage show.

The Alliance leader, who initially was on the STING lineup, declared that he would not perform at STING following ‘disrespectful’ comments made by the show’s lead promoter, Isaiah Laing in an interview, implying that ‘Gaza’ deejay and current rival,Tommy Lee Sparta had a good chance of defeating him in a clash.

Though speculation within Dancehall circles was rife that Bounty Killer was bluffing, the ‘Grung Gaad’ confirmed during a radio interview on Wednesday that he was serious. The iconic entertainer stated that his STING deposit was returned a week and half ago and the contract originally signed to do the show is now null and void.

The concert, hosted annually by Grammy-winning Jamaican entertainer, Shaggy and his Make a Difference foundation was due to stage its fourth edition late this year, featuring an all-Jamaican lineup in honor of Jamaica’s 50th independence anniversary. However, Shaggy and Friends has will now be held every other year after a decision was made to revamp the event’s setup.

Shaggy’s manager and Solid Agency head,Sharon Burke confirmed the singer’s decision to hold his charitable initiative bi-annually, but did not divulge additional details.

Usain Bolt cops World Athlete of the Year award

Two-time defending Olympic champion, Usain Bolt can add more gold to his already rich collection as the Jamaican sprinting legend has been named World Male Athlete of the Year.

Bolt received the award on Saturday morning during a special awards ceremony by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) this morning. The world athletics governing body celebrated their 100th year of existence during that ceremony, which took place in Barcelona, Spain.

Bolt beat out Olympic 110m hurdles champion, Aries Merritt and Kenyan middle-distance runner, David Rudisha, who won the 800m title at London 2012.

Bolt’s World Male Athlete of the Year award caps off a highly successful 2012 for Bolt, who retained his 100m and 200m titles in London while anchoring Jamaica to a second straight 4 by 100m men’s relay medal, in which they broke their own record by 21 seconds. He became the second man to win back to back 100m titles (Carl Lewis) and the first to repeat as the 200m champion.

Meanwhile, the World Female Athlete of the Year award went to prominent American sprinter, Allyson Felix, who scored gold in the 200m for women. Felix also helped the United States’ 4 by 100m women’s relay team to record-shattering success during the summer games in London.

Felix eclipsed Olympic heptathlon champion, Jessica Ennis of Great Britain, as well as Olympic shot-put champion, Valerie Adams of New Zealand.

Tiana being over priced by booking agencies – especially for shows in Africa

With the Dancehall Duchess asserting herself as one of the genre’s emerging acts, it seems that a few promoters are trying to capitalize on her royal status within the industry.

Dancehall star, Tiana has allegedly been the subject of attempted scamming by promoters, locally and internationally. One source, who recently travelled from Africa, told Tiana’s manager, Carlington ‘OutAroad’ Wilmot that unscrupulous persons are over charging the artiste for upcoming shows.

Additionally, one promoter also told Tiana’s manager of a specific case, when a booking agency charged US$20,000 for her services in Africa. However, after a price of US$15,000 was seemingly agreed to, the booking agent relayed that Tiana will be not available for the date anymore, but they could offer three other artistes affiliated with their company for a similar price.

This isn’t just happening to Tiana with overseas agencies, but such excessive pricing has also occurred locally for the Dancehall Duchess. Not only have some local promoters been overcharging her, they have been doing so in an effort to book persons who are signed with their agencies.

Meanwhile, many persons have been booking dub plate sessions for Tiana without her consent as producers have inquired her on social media about these sessions that they paid for. Industry players are being urged not to pay money to these unscrupulous persons.

Nevertheless, these apparent politics won’t deter Tiana from closing out 2012 with a bang as she recently released singles such as Mine Di Dog Bite Yuh (Dog Bite Riddim) – Produced by Washroom Entertainment).

Additionally, Tiana features on the soon-to-be released, OutARoad produced, Hot Pursuit Riddim, which also features acts such as deejay of the year contender, Konshens and his rising protégés, Darrio as well as Delus, amongst many others.

All Booking Inquires should be directed to Tiana’s Manager [email protected] or [email protected] – Tell: (876) 3813874. NEW YORK: [email protected]

UWI students start campaign promoting tolerance

Students at the University of the West Indies (UWI) are taking a stand regarding one of Jamaica’s hot button issues in the wake of a controversial beating at another local tertiary institution.

Weeks after video emerged of a male student at the University of Technology (UTECH) being beaten by security guards after allegedly engaging in a sexual act with another man, UWI students have organized a pro-tolerance movement dubbed Every Face Counts. The initiative, which features on the One People: Jamaica Facebook page, mirrors an American pro-gay marriage campaign started in 2008 called NOH8 (No Hate).

Maya Wilkinson, the publications committee chairperson for the UWI Guild of Students is the lead organizer of Every Face Counts. In a statement posted on the movement’s official YouTube page, Wilkinson advocates for the tolerance of people who are ‘different.’

Evidentiary hearing set in Buju’s drug case

There’s better news today for embattled Jamaican entertainer, Buju Banton as an evidentiary hearing has been set to explore allegations that a juror violated protocol in his drug trial last year.

According to reports, the hearing has been secured by Buju’s lawyer, Chokwe Lumumba in conjunction with his defense support committee. The evidentiary hearing will take place on December 20 at the Sam M. Gibbons Federal Courthouse in Tampa, FL on December 20 at 9:30 a.m.

The court has reportedly summoned four jurors to this hearing, one of whom admitted to reporters last month that she researched aspects of Buju Banton’s drug case prior to deliberation. Should that juror, Terri Wright, be proven to have done so, a mistrial could be ruled in Buju’s drug case as researching facts for federal trials constitutes a violation of court orders.

In her defense, Wright claims that despite doing such research, it had no influence on her thinking through the trial in which Buju was convicted of three drug charges and subsequently sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Buju Banton still faces an additional five years in prison on a gun charge that was reinstated during the summer after an appeal to overturn his conviction fell through. However, a re-sentencing hearing on said gun charge was postponed after Lumumba’s application for an investigation into the alleged juror misconduct was approved.
