Tiana nominated for Female artiste of the Year in Kenya

TianaFast-rising Dancehall artiste and the self-professed Dancehall Duchess, Tiana has once again proven her strong outreach in the continent of Africa as she’s been nominated for a major accolade in the mother continent.

Tiana was recently nominated for Female Artiste of the Year at the 2012 Kingston 10 Reggae Awards in Kenya. Based in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, Kingston 10 hails as a prominent Dancehall/Reggae show that highlights many of Jamaica’s top entertainers on a daily basis; promoting the island’s key genres across the country.

Known for her strong fan base in the West African country, Tiana was nominated for Female Artiste of The Year alongside the Queen of Dancehall, Lady Saw, prominent Dancehall divas, Tifa and Ce’Cile as well as Reggae warrior, Ikaya.

Tiana had a commendable follow-up year to her breakout campaign in 2011. After scoring with hits like Bruk Out and Wine, Highest Grade and many others last year, Tiana made waves with hits like Only Girl Him Want (remix of Popcaan’s Only Man She Want), Dem a Bawl, Don’t Stop and One Stuck Whine. Dem a Bawl landed Tiana a top 10 spot on the MTV Base Africa Dancehall/Reggae charts while holding down top spot on the Kenyan charts four consecutive weeks.

The Dancehall Duchess is no stranger to award nominations this year as she not only copped a pair of nominations at the International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA) this past July, but she was named Jamaica’s top new artiste at the 2012 3B Entertainment Industry Awards in October.

Tiana is seeking your support as she contends for the Kingston 10 Reggae Award for Best Female Artiste. To participate in the process, head over to the official Kingston 10 Facebook page to cast your vote for this emerging star.

The Kingston 10 Reggae Awards is now in its fifth year and will take place in January 2013.

STING promoter threatens Black Ryno with lawsuit following brawl with Popcaan

Popcaan-Black-Ryno-FightThe infamous brawl at STING 2012 between revered ‘Gaza’ deejays, Popcaan and Black Ryno may have garnered a few laughs from Dancehall fans, but the show’s promoter isn’t smiling about the matter and plans to take legal action against one of the combatants.

Supreme Promotions head and STING 2012 lead promoter, Isaiah Laing is reportedly considering a lawsuit against Black Ryno for instigating the much talked about incident with his ex-Portmore Empire teammate. This, after Ryno walked out on Popcaan’s set as he tried to start a clash between himself and the self-professed ‘Fry Yiy.’ However, Popcaan was in no mood for lyrical confrontation, shoving Ryno off the stage before a near minute-long brawl ensued involving the artistes and their entourages.

Sizzla, Busy Signal shine at drama-filled STING 2012

Spice prop at STINGIn the New Living Translation version of the Bible, John 1:5 reads, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.” Perhaps this enlightening quote from scripture sums up STING 2012 in a nutshell: A night filled with few stellar performances standing out above the drama and sub-standard efforts that dominated Dancehall’s biggest stage show.

STING 2012 was hyped in recent weeks as a revamped stage show focusing on strong performances, unearthing more young talent and an adjusted clash format. Though the show left a somewhat disappointing taste in the minds of hardcore Dancehall fans, some noteworthy acts and less recognizable names added flavor to an event that has lost some taste in recent years.

After a number of unknown acts and a clash of the bands dominated the first few hours of STING, it took a couple of veterans to finally put life into the show; primarily Wickaman, who delivered a spirited performance while honoring his long-time friend and fellow deejay, Captain Barkey, delving into their catalogue of hits from the 90s and 2000s.

Fellow veteran, Lady G proved she still has gas left in the tank while comedic entertainer Food Kartel also engaged the crowd by ‘cooking’ some of this year’s biggest hits like Uncle Demon (Shook) and many others.

However, it was a newcomer that really ignited the crowd inside Jamworld in Portmore early Thursday morning as emerging Reggae star, Chronixx elevated his worth, delivering a wholesome set capped off by his smash hit, Warrior while proving himself as a must-see attraction for 2013 and beyond. From there, things heated up as ‘The Strong One,’ Etana gave a rousing set while Iba Mahr and I-Wayne also delivered strong sets.

Beres Hammond reaches number one on Billboard chart

One Love, One Life coverReggae legend, Beres Hammond has been enjoying lots of international exposure in recent weeks and with good reason as his latest album has topped Billboard.

Hammond’s new album, One Love, One Life, peaked at number one on the Billboard Reggae Album chart in this, its fourth week on the chart. One Love, One Life, which debuted on November 13, has been in the top 5 of Billboard’s Reggae chart ever since its release and, according to SoundScan, has sold just under 2,200 copies to date.

Hammond’s creativity dominated on the double disc, as he produced or wrote 19 of its 20 tracks. The album contains several conscious and lover’s rock songs, the type of music that has made Hammond one of Reggae music’s greatest products.

This is the latest in a strong run in the United States for Hammond, who appeared on the Jimmy Fallon show over a week ago, where he promoted One Life, One Live and performed alongside Grammy-winning hip-hop/soul band, The Roots.

He followed that up by performing at the ground-breaking Sounds of Reggae concert inside Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on December 12 where he shared the stage with fellow, highly-acclaimed musicians such as Shaggy, UB40 and Maxi Priest. Two days later, Hammond performed at the Hard Rock Café in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

One Love, One Life is also available for purchase on iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/ca/album/one-love-one-life/id570381729 and is being distributed by VP Records, in collaboration with Hammond’s Harmony House label.

2012 Year in Review: The Top 10 stories in Jamaican Pop Culture

busy-signal-arrest-2012-09-22-300x300This being Jamaica’s 50th year of independence, many of us expected lots of fireworks, chaos and the celebratory hoopla that comes along with such a significant anniversary. In the entertainment world, we got that and then some throughout 2012.

From triumph to tragedy, and the stuff in between, here are the 10 stories that gripped the Jamaican entertainment scene in 2012.

10. Deanna Robins reaches Miss World final: I won’t lie. In June, while watching the Miss Jamaica World pageant, I was home shouting my objection to the final results, thinking that Trishauna Clarke and not the eventual winner, Deanna Robins should have won the crown, mainly because of my bias towards Clarke given she’s a an old prep school classmate of mine. At the time I doubted Robins could deliver the goods on the Miss World stage. After her performance in China, it re-affirmed why I shouldn’t be allowed near a pageant judging panel.

Robins was the epitome of brains and beauty as not only did her beautiful skin tone ad angelic face win her plaudits, her dancing and sporting skills proved her all-round qualities. Not only did she represent ‘The Rock’ well, she excelled on the Miss World stage, earning a spot in the Top 7. Reminding me of a young Lisa Hanna, Robins was undeterred by the pressure and pulled off our best performance at a major pageant since Yendi Phillipps’ second-place finish at the 2010 Miss Universe pageant.

Her excellence made us proud and for that, I salute her.

9. Yendi and Chino have child together: Speaking of Yendi, she garnered attention for her belly more than the rest of her body in 2012. Phillipps received much praise and scrutiny when she announced her first pregnancy.

News of her first child with boyfriend and prominent Dancehall/Reggae star, Daniel ‘Chino’ McGregor brought lots of joy and congratulation to her life. However, Phillipps also faced tongue lashings from several detractors, including fans of her ex-boyfriend and former world-record holding runner, Asafa Powell.

Despite the trolling cartoons and the hateful messages, Phillipps was unmoved by the criticism. In late September, the Smile Jamaica co-host gave birth to a bouncing baby girl in late September. Reports of a possible engagement soon followed, but it’s clear that Yendi and Chino are now one of Jamaica’s power couples.

8. Deaths of Mighty Mike/Ewan McRae/Captain Barkey: With the joy of life comes the inevitable fate of death, and that sadly was realized in the case of three Jamaican entertainment veterans.

Busy Signal to tour Europe next year, maintain presence in the U.S.

busy_signalRecently freed Dancehall/Reggae superstar, Busy Signal will return to arguably his most accommodating overseas market as he’s set to tour Europe early next year.

The popular singjay, who recently served a six month sentence for absconding bail in the United States, will embark on a promotional tour next month to highlight his highly successful album, Reggae Music Again. According to Busy’s manager, Shane Brown, the album has thrived despite the singjay’s legal issues and still has a strong shelf life in terms of popularity and appeal.

This is big news for Busy, whose album was recently named as one of BBC Music’s top 10 albums of 2012. Not only was Reggae Music Again the only Reggae project on the list, it was lauded as some plaudits as an authentic representation of the Reggae genre, fitting for the island’s 50th anniversary.

Busy Signal was humbled by this development, stating in a press release, “When I heard, I just went speechless. This is really a great honor and I just want to big up everyone who supports this album and who will continue to support this album.”

Busy’s European tour will make between 15 and 18 stops in 10 countries, according to Brown. Additionally, Busy Signal will perform a number of Reggae festivals scheduled for next July and August.

Meanwhile, despite being unable to travel to the United States due to his legal issues, Busy Signal maintains a strong presence in the North American country. According to Brown, the highly-revered entertainer will continue to promote himself to his American fans through social media and radio interviews.

Busy Signal recently revealed in a TV interview that while he may not be able to travel to the United States for the next two years, he can apply for a visa at the earliest possible convenience.

The artiste has been very busy on the local scene since returning last month, releasing several Dancehall singles and will continue to do so in the immediate future, according to Brown. Busy will also perform his first stage show in Jamaica for four years when he headlines STING 2012 on December 26 at Jamworld in Portmore, St. Catherine.

Gays create new version of Bible, may be introduced to Jamaican market

queen-james-gay-bibleA group of homosexuals are allegedly introducing a new version of God’s word in a way that is more favourable to the gay and lesbian community.

According to several reports, a new version of the King James Bible has been re-interpreted by gay editors overseas in a new adaptation of the holy book, called the Queen James Bible. The main source of this book is unknown. However, the book is currently available on Amazon.com for a retail price of US$35 and, according to their website, seeks to clarify a “long-standing interpretive ambiguity in key Bible passages regarding homosexuality.”

One of the amended verses was Genesis 19:5, which reads, “And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? Bring them out unto us that we may know them”. In its amended form, it now reads “And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? Bring them out unto us, that we may rape and humiliate them.”

Bounty Killer overcomes boos, sand-throwing incident at beach event

Bounty KillerThough iconic Dancehall superstar, Bounty Killer has long indicated his desire not to clash ‘Gaza’ deejay Tommy Lee Sparta anytime soon, some of Tommy Lee’s fans apparently tried to answer some of the Grung Gaad’s taunts on his behalf.

Two weeks ago, the internet world went abuzz following video showing Tommy Lee Sparta being booed while performing at the CHUG IT beach party in Portmore, St. Catherine. Despite being well-received by the crowd for a majority of his set, Lee got an ear full from patrons when making disparaging remarks about Bounty Killer after singing his hit track, P**** Mechanic. Then Tommy Lee Sparta, who later denied the incident even took place, received another chorus of boos while performing at Rum Punch later that weekend for once again speaking about Bounty, alleging that the Alliance leader orchestrated a plot to have fans turn against him at the show.

This past weekend, Bounty Killer took the stage at Chug It alongside fellow Alliance deejays Bling Dawg, Iyara and a host of others. Just moments after taking to the stage and performing Badman Kill Fi Fun, Bounty was forced to defend himself after some fans threw sand at the deejay, hurling boos in his direction in an apparent reprisal for the Tommy Lee Sparta incident two weekends prior.

Konshens set for STING 2012

Dancehall’s biggest stage show has decided to add the industry’s hottest property to its lineup as Konshens will be one of the headliners on STING 2012 later this month.

After initially suggesting he would not do STING, Konshens has decided to perform at the 29th edition of the controversial event. The announcement was made on Sunday night by the show’s organizers, Supreme Promotions following talks with the Stop Sign singer.

In the release, Konshens expressed his satisfaction with the new direction STING appears to be heading towards.

“Initially, STING was a show I looked forward to watching, not so much to be a part of, though the hardcore dancehall is healthy for the culture,” he said. “This new turn weh dem a try to mek to give the show a facelift, I’m happy to be a part of it. Sting a Jamaica show fi di grass-roots people dem, so I am happy to be able to perform fi dem,”

This will be Konshens’ first appearance on the STING bill since 208, when he burst onto the scene with his classic track, Winner. However, the favorite for 2012 deejay of the year seemed like a lost cause in the eyes of the typically harsh crowd that filled Jamworld.

“I was at Sting 2008 only as a young artiste, coming off a European tour the day of the show, and di band say dem nah rehearse wid mi team if I’m not present. Mix that with the biggest and roughest dancehall crowd in the world and see wah yuh get. Mi escape the boos still,” he joked.

Four years later, Konshens has enjoyed a stellar year, racking up multiple hits such as Gyal a Bubble, Money Up, Destiny (featuring Tifa) and So Mi Tan. His debut album, Mental Maintenance, topped digital charts across Europe, Japan and New Zealand.

Additionally, the popular deejay headlined Reggae Sumfest 2012 and even featured on this season of Tyra Banks’ hit show, America’s Next Top Model, which shot episodes in Kingston earlier this year.

Year in Review: The Best of Dancehall and Reggae in 2012

It seems like just yesterday the year started, but 2012 is already coming to a close; marking a year within Dancehall and Reggae music that showcased its share of pacesetters during Jamaica’s 50th year of Independence.

Fitting that in a year where Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Frazer-Pryce re-defined the realms of speed in London, there were a number of fast-rising stars who proved consistently that no finish line is in sight regarding their promising careers. This year proved that there may be a future for our core genres after despite two of their proverbial kings, Buju Banton and Vybz Kartel serving different forms of penance behind bars. With that said, here are my picks for the Best of 2012 in Dancehall & Reggae music.

Best Reggae Artiste – Romain Virgo: Firstly, let me say it’s quite pleasing to know the presence of Reggae, the musical art form that made Jamaica a household name, has finally re-stamped its authority on the local scene. A borage of all-Reggae projects like Busy Signal’s Reggae Music Again and Delly Ranx’s The Next Chapter help Jamaica to regain some of its true identity during our most crucial year as an independent island. However, one artiste and album conquered all.

Virgo became an instant sensation when he conquered Digicel Rising Stars in 2007. Five years later, his star has shone amongst the brightest in the industry, primarily through his latest compilation, The System. Giving us hits like I Know Better, Rich in Love and The System, the album embodied the true essence of Reggae. His performance savvy and range have vastly improved year by year, proving why he is Reggae music’s next international superstar.

Comeback Artiste(s) of the Year – Cham/Da’Ville: After scoring a major hit with Stronger (feat. Bounty Killer and Mykal Rose), Cham seemingly disappeared into the abyss for a little while. However, 2012 proved that Cham has not only refused to desert from the scene, he has an oasis of hits left in the tank.

Wine, Back Way and Tun Up were just three of the hits Cham scored in a remarkable year for the highly acclaimed superstar. His lyrical ingenuity reached new levels and while ascending up the musical stratosphere, he brought his wife and upcoming singer, Ophelia ‘O’ Beckett along for the ride.

Da’Ville endured a rollercoaster ride off-stage as he attempted to re-charge his batteries musically. Those batteries were fully charged as the Reggae fusion singer returned with a bang this year through his critically-endorsed album, Krazy Love. Hits like Woman, This Love and You Got Di Ting once again made Da’Ville a force to be reckoned within the industry and offered a more savvy side to this wise veteran of the industry.

Prosecution to call key witness in Kartel murder trial

Embattled Dancehall superstar, Adidja ‘Vybz Kartel’ Palmer faces a very tense return to court next month when the Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams trial is expected to commence.

According to several reports, the prosecution in the Williams murder case will call on a ‘star witness’ who could cause big problems for Kartel and his defense team.
