Cliff-Twang faces new lawsuit for allegedly issuing bounced cheques

Clifton BrownLegal problems continue to mount for Jamaican YouTube sensation, Clifton ‘Cliff-Twang’ Brown as the one-time deejay now faces a lawsuit claiming he bounced several cheques at a gas station last year.

The allegations stem from instances where Brown allegedly issued three bounced cheques to a Corporate Area gas station for gas, amongst other items. The St. Thomas native was told he had insufficient funds in his account after sending said cheques. The lawsuit was reportedly filed in the Sutton Street Resident Magistrates Court after Brown failed to pay the money owed once notified of the issue and now is being sued for JA$56,000.

He faces a Valentine’s Day (February 14) court hearing in the matter.

This is the second time in just over a week a legal issue involving Cliff-Twang has been publicized. Last week Tuesday it was reported that he was jailed in December for failing to pay child maintenance after turning down a bail offer of JA$80,000.

Brown repeatedly appeared in Kingston’s Family Court after his baby’s mother accused him of being behind in child support payments. He finally received bail this past Thursday and will re-appear in the Family Court next month in that case.

After a remix of a Prime Time News video appeared on YouTube in the summer of 2011, Brown rose to prominence for his ‘twanging’ and popular catch phrase, ‘Nobody Canna Cross It,’ when describing flooding at the Mavis Bank Bridge in his native parish. The DJ Powa produced video copped millions of views and made several television appearances and scored an endorsement deal with local telecommunications giant, LIME for his efforts.

Romain Virgo shines, international stars dazzle at Jazz and Blues

Chronixx at Jazz and BluesFor three nights in January, the 2013 edition of the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival offered performances and moments leaving little doubt as to why it is one of the island’s premiere events.

On Thursday, crowds lined up in anticipation of a jam-packed opening night lineup at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium as Jazz and Blues kicked off its 17th staging of the event. A decent turnout accompanied a bill headlined by legendary Reggae band, Third World, who were celebrating their 40th anniversary as a group.

Third World closed out an all-Jamaican opening night roster with a rousing set including hits such as Now That We Found Love, Forbidden Love, amongst a host of others. They were also honored for their vast contributions to the Jamaican music industry along with fellow Reggae legend, Ken Boothe, who celebrated his 50th year as a recording artiste. Rastas denounce Snoop Lion’s use of their culture

Snoop-Dogg-TransformationSnoop Lion’s recent transformation from hardcore rap to Reggae has surprised and even amused many music fans locally and overseas. However, some prominent Rastafarians are far from enthused about the entertainer’s new persona.

Legendary Reggae singer, Bunny Wailer has called out the artiste formerly known as Snoop Dogg, claiming he has been using his ‘Lion’ moniker to profit off Rastafarian culture. Wailer and the Ethio-Africa Diaspora Union Millenium Council issued a seven page letter to Snoop Lion on Wednesday outlining their grievances with the artiste.

Wailer told TMZ of his belief that Snoop Lion is only using the Rastafarian moniker to sell records and his Reincarnated movie while insisting the converted Reggae crooner has failed to meet the “contractual, moral and verbal commitments” of being a Rasta.

According to Wailer, Snoop has engaged in ‘outright fraudulent use of Rastafari Community’s personalities and symbolism” — and has failed to meet “contractual, moral and verbal commitments.’

The Council also questioned Snoop’s motives for making the switch, demanding he drop the ‘Lion’ off his name immediately. “Smoking weed and loving Bob Marley and Reggae music is not what defines the Rastafari indigenous Culture!” they said in their statement.

Snoop Lion, who has traveled to Jamaica on several occasions over the last year, has yet to respond to these accusations. In a recent television interview, Snoop explained he was given the ‘Lion’ name by a group of Rastafarians he visited during his trip to Jamaica last February, signaling his maturity as a man.

The California-born entertainer returned to the island earlier this month as he shot the official video for his single, Lighters Up, featuring prominent Dancehall artistes, Popcaan and Mavado. He is also promoting the new web series, Noisey Jamaica, a 10-part web series exploring the nuances of Dancehall music and culture which debuted on Tuesday.

Vybz Kartel murder trial put off until May

KartelIt may be a new year, but the same problems are rearing their ugly heads in the ongoing murder trial of internationally-acclaimed deejay, Vybz Kartel.

Kartel’s trial in the murder case of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams was scheduled to get underway at the Home Circuit Court in Kingston on Monday. However, the matter was postponed yet again after lawmakers determined there were insufficient jurors.

The prosecution and defense teams in Kartel’s case expressed their disappointment with the development as they were ready to proceed.

Nevertheless, they will all reconvene on May 27, when the trial is expected to commence.

This is the second postponement of the matter since it was originally set to begin last November. However, the case was delayed until Jan. 21 as Kartel’s lawyer, Valerie Neita-Robertson was working on a separate case.

Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, faces one count of murder in the case along with Shawn Campbell aka Shawn Storm, Kahira Jones, Andre St. John and Calvin ‘Moonie’ Haye. The latter of the accused is currently on bail.

Each of the men are accused of killing Williams during an incident at a Havendale residence in St. Andrew in August 2011.

Law enforcement officials later claimed they captured video and audio evidence linking each of the accused to the murder. Williams’ body has not been found.

Tiana teams with X Factor host for new single, ‘Back To Me’

Tiana and Jesse GiddingsInternationally recognized Dancehall starlet, Tiana seeks to conquer yet another market in the world of music as she’s teamed up with an artiste quite familiar with having the ‘X Factor.’

The ‘Dancehall Duchess’ recently joined forces with Universal Music recording artiste Jesse Giddings, co-host of the pre-show for the popular American talent series, X Factor. Giddings, a popular Canadian singer and ex-VJ of Much Music flew to Jamaica last week to shoot the video for his collaborative effort alongside Tiana entitled, Back To Me.

The visuals for Back To Me were shot in several locations across eastern Jamaica, including Downtown Kingston, Bull Bay, St. Thomas and the Old Harbour train station in St. Catherine. Giddings and Tiana also threw an after party to celebrate the success of the video, which will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

This signals a possible elevation for Tiana as she seeks to secure the faith and support of fans in Canada and across North America as she crosses over into the pop world with the sultry voice making her a household name within Dancehall. In addition to the video, Back To Me will appear on Gidding’s album, set for release this Spring.

While aiming to dominate the charts in one continent, Tiana has proven her worth in another as she recently secured Female Dancehall Artiste of the Year at the Kingston 10 Awards in Nairobi, Kenya. The Dancehall Duchess ran away with the crown, consolidating her strong reputation in the West African country as she eclipsed Tifa, Lady Saw, Ikaya and Ce’Cile for the accolade.

These achievements mark a strong start to 2013 for Tiana, who aims to be more than a prominent singjay, but a universally renowned superstar for years to come.

RDX Responds to “Steal Song Accusations”

In light of recent accusations made by a recording artiste and its label which led to an article being published in the Jamaica Star on Monday, January 15th, 2013. I Shuzzr, publicist for the duo RDX felt if necessary to comment on the issue formally on behalf of the duo.

Since the release of the single “Kotch’ produced by Cashflow Records which has received over 7500 views on Youtube, neither the recording artiste and its label by extension have expressed their concerns through the various formal channels at their disposal. Whilst the concept may seem to bare some far-fetched similarities, its development and conception had nothing to bare on materials sent or produced by any other artiste or label. RDX versatility speaks volume, as we’ve seen the constant successes and accomplishment being attained.
The duo is well known for their creativity within the industry, as they have produced successful rhythms (riddims) and written materials (lyrics) for other artiste. With hit singles such as ‘JUMP’, ‘BROAD OUT’ BEND OVA’ amongst many other, the duo have represented for Jamaica on several fronts, touring Europe and other parts of the world constantly, staying on top of the charts, recording, producing and keeping fans entertained and enemies confused.
RDX and its team have been busy enjoying the benefits of their successes, whilst planning and strategizing as to how we can achieve even more. We’ve held ourselves to high standards in this music industry and even encouraged our peers, those who aspire to become artiste themselves or otherwise – the single ‘Shining Star’ speaks volume to that.
We find the accusations baseless and would like to make it clear that we will not fuel these underhanded cheap tactics by an unknown artiste and/or label to gain some form popularity.
