OMIBillboard chart king, OMI, has received ample praise for his summertime hit, Cheerleader, which topped the American magazine’s Top 100 chart for several weeks. His much-anticipated album which features the song, however, has garnered a much cooler take from music critics.

Last Friday, OMI released his debut studio album, Me 4 U  via the Ultra Music label, a subsidiary of Sony Music. which also features his latest single, Hula Hoop and Color Of My Lips (featuring Busy Signal).

One high-profile critic in particular was not enthused by the effort. In reviewing the project, Rolling Stones music critic, Annie Licata branded OMI as ‘not being ready for primetime,’ suggesting the rest of songs on Me 4 U aren’t broad enough to crossover into the international mainstream community.

“OMI scored one of this year’s fizziest hits with Cheerleader, a pop-reggae trifle with a fun-loving dance beat and lyrics about his decision not to cheat on his woman,” Licata said. “But the 28-year-old Jamaican singer’s charm wears thin on his debut LP. Cheerleader was a year-old song that soared to Number One after German producer Felix Jaehn remixed it. The rest of the songs here (on the album) show an artiste who isn’t quite ready for prime time. The best tracks on Me 4 U are built for good times and warm weather, complete with steel drum beats and odes to the singer’s island home.”

Though Licata praised the inclusion of Color of My Lips and particularly Busy Signal’s inclusion on the track, she also said listeners, “would have a better time making a playlist with Cheerleader 14 times in a row.”

Music lovers across various avenues, including iTunes and social media have expressed mixed feelings on the album, with some rating the island feel on the album while others have accused OMI of using too much autotune on the record.

Meanwhile, Hula Hoop has been receiving heavy rotation on foreign radio stations while Cheerleader recently helped OMI land a pair of wins at the International Reggae and World Music Awards.
