A SPLASH BEYOND THE CARIBBEAN AND GAIN NATIONAL ATTENTION IN U.S.

The Song Wins NYC’s HOT 97 FM’s Battle of the Beats Last Week,
Earns Nomination for 2013 Soul Train Awards and
Unleashes New Video for Major Lazer Remix

Trinidadian Soca Star will Drop Album on VP Records in 2014 and Completes New Photo Shoot with Star Photographer Jonathan Mannion
Soca sensation Bunji Garlin, who is slated to release his new studio albumDifferentology on VP Records early next year, has already established the title track as the biggest hit of the 2013 Caribbean Carnival season. The single, which has garnered an accumulation of over a million YouTube views since its February 2013 release, continues to make major moves in the United States.

Last week, the Trinidadian vocalist was declared the reigning champion on NYC’s HOT 97 FM’s Battle of The Beats competition. Determined by fan’s votes, “Differentology” knocked out a new contender each day during this week long face off on hip hop’s premiere radio station.

“Differentology” lands Bunji Garlin a 2013 Soul Train Awards nomination for Best International Performance. The winner will be announced at this year’s prestigious award’s ceremony, which will be held in Las Vegas, NV on November 8th and airs nationwide on December 1st.  Other nominees in this category include Machel Montano, Emeli Sande, P-Square and Iyanya.

The genre-bending song also caught the attention of DJ supergroup Major Lazer, who immediately jumped on the remix.  In addition to the song’s colorful eye-popping music video directed by Nigel Thompson, a brand new video for this remix has emerged and helped fuel the buzz to a crossover audience.

No ATI in 2013, says promoter

nt072512Appleton Temptation Isle (ATI), the popular beach party series that has taken place since August 2001, will not be staged this year, according to reports.

Speculation regarding ATI’s status was rampant in recent months after the series’ main sponsor, Appleton became the main sponsor of SPF Weekend, a newly-introduced party series that will take place from August 2-5 in Ocho Rios.

On Tuesday, ATI’s lead promoter and Absolute Entertainment head, Alex Chin confirmed to the Jamaica STAR that the event will not take place this year, but could not offer details as to why it has been cancelled.

ATI, which has annually been staged in Negril, is known for offering parties such as Stages, Daydreams and many others, with the series growing from 6,000 patrons in its initial stages to 20,000. Last year, the series featured parties such as Colours, The Original Water Party and Officially Diagnosed.

However, ATI has faced strong competition in recent years from Smirnoff Dream Weekend, which is run by former ATI promoters and also takes place in Negril.

This year, Smirnoff Dream Weekend will be staged along with two other beach party series: Rum-Bar Flex Week, which also takes place from August 1-6 in Kingston and Portmore as well as Rumfire Temptation Isle (RTI) in Negril.

Junior Kelly Back In Jamaica After Successful Fall European Tour.

Reggae singer Junior Kelly is back home in Jamaica after a very successful fall European tour, which kicked off last October in Amiens, France. Even hurricane Sandy hitting Jamaica, weather conditions grounding flights and closing the Island airports couldn’t put a damper on him. He remained in high spirit and great energy.

Kelly departed as soon as the country airport in Montego Bay reopened on the Thursday, October 25 late evening right before his Friday, October 26 performance. With no time to spare as he landed, Junior Kelly was up for his meet and greet, press and straight to his scheduled performance.

Full of energy, good form and positively great vibes, Junior delivered his hits to the delight of eager fans. Taking the crowd on a melodic musical journey with classic songs such as “Love So Nice” to his latest hit “Been There” video. The tour took Kelly and his band through the Netherlands, France, Austria, Switzerland and Italy.

Reflecting on his tour Junior stated, “The energy and vibe i received from the fans during this tour was truly amazing and humbling and it was heart warming to see that people out there are still crying out for conscious music, my music, Reggae music”

“Its really beautiful to see three generations of people coming out to my concerts and enjoying and loving Reggae music, so i know it will live on”

“I really appreciate the fact that i am able to perform every day of the week and the fans came out in their numbers every night to listen to Reggae music, even in these harsh economic times when buying a concert ticket is so hard. These die-hearted fans in Europe are mainly from the poorer class of society and they have so many other choices in terms of artistes or food or paying a bill, but they come out because they see me as one of the young roots artistes whose messages make them feel good and one that is going to stand the test of time. It is truly a blessing and an honor.”

Junior Kelly scores # 1 with the hit single “Been There”

After 15 weeks on the Jamaica Music Countdown Top 25 Reggae Singles Chart, singer Junior Kelly has convincingly captured the number one slot with the gripping, reality-laced  single, “Been There“.
Chart-watchers had early predicted  that “Been There” would have enjoyed exciting chart success, noting that there was a strong possibility of it taking over the pole position. Well, it’s ‘Mission Accomplished’. They are now eyeing the song’s progress on the long-running New York Reggae Singles Chart, where it now sits in the number 6 spot and is steadily making upward movements. Kellyhas also dominated the popular Stampede Street Chart, where he has been singled out as ‘Artiste of the Week‘.
On the Broadleaf riddim, produced by Big Bomb Entertainment, “Been There” adds to Junior Kelly’s list of songs which have impacted in a huge way. Among them are the  “Sunshine,” “Boom Draw“, “Hungry Days,” Missing You (with Bar-bee)”, “Receive” and the blockbuster, breakout single, “Love So Nice“, which spent a record 15 weeks at number one.
The single, which was driven by the music video, is currently getting good rotation across the globe and Kelly himself has been busy on the promotional trail, ensuring that “Been There”  forms part of his  live set.
He explained that the initial response to the song was so overwhelming that he did the music video ahead of schedule. The video, which has a simple and effective storyboard, sees Kelly playing the role of a taximan, as he belts out the lyrics to the song.
“I give thanks to all those who worked assiduously to make this single number one. Naturally, it’s a good feeling when fans endorse your music and it gives me the encouragement to continue along this path,” the conscious Rastafarian commented.
Junior Kelly, who has been enjoying a strong season of success, both in Jamaica and overseas, has easily reclaimed his space in the US market after an hiatus. His performance in Brooklyn at the Rose Garden on July 8 was so powerful that he was immediately booked for a second show to be held at the VillageNY on July 22.  Kelly gave a masterful performance at the Bayfront Reggae Festival,Minnesota, last Saturday, alongside Jamaican artistes Ce’cileAnthony B and Gramps Morgan.
Fans will be treated to another side of Junior Kelly on SundayJuly 29, at Weaver High School, Hartford Connecticut. He will be participating in the annual Celebrity Soccer Games, an event which he is quite enthusiastic about.
Junior Kelly has been in the business of making uplifting and empowering reggae music for more than 25 years. Beginning his career during Dancehall’s ‘rude boy’ era in the late ’80s, Kelly’s inspiring messages have always made him a standout artist within Jamaica’s heavily populated entertainment scene.
His breakthrough single “Love So Nice” established him as a bonafide star in 2000. His commanding juxtaposition of precisely timed, deejayed rhymes and melodic singing, coupled with his vivid storytelling abilities, took the song to #1 on the Jamaican charts. The album “Love So Nice“, released in 2001, also spawned the well-received singles which brought him recognition throughout the Caribbean, North America, and Europe.

Video : Yohan Blake pulls a stunner, beats Usain Bolt in 100m

Get the Flash Player to see the wordTube Media Player.

The Fastest Man in the World wasn’t the fastest man in Jamaica.
That honour goes to Yohan Blake, who got out of the blocks fast and finished the 100-meter final in 9.75 seconds to upset world-record holder Usain Bolt by 0.11 seconds in the Jamaican Olympic trials.
A shocker? Well, that’s for the world to decide. One thing for sure, however, is that the calculus for the London Olympics has changed dramatically.
Blake is the reigning world champion but that victory, last year in South Korea, came with an asterisk because Bolt didn’t run that night after being disqualified for a false start. This was their first rematch, their first real race since then. Bolt was considered the favourite, not only because of his world record – 9.58 seconds – but because Blake, his training partner had never run below 9.84 in his life.

Well, now, he has.
The 9.75 seconds goes down as the best time this year and also breaks the four-year-old National Stadium record; both marks were 9.76 – both held by Bolt.
As much as the numbers, though, it was all that daylight between Blake and Bolt at the finish line that told this story. Blake, the man known as “The Beast,” let out a primal scream when he crossed. Bolt just sort of pulled up – no “To the World” pose or anything else to celebrate.
Asafa Powell will join them at the Olympics, after finishing in 9.88. In the women’s 100, defending Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won in a Jamaican record 10.70 seconds, with Veronica Campbell-Brown in second and Kerron Stewart in third.

Blake beats Bolt.. the fastest man in the world.. by 0.11.

REGGAE SUPERSTAR KY-MANI MARLEY TAKES COSTA RICA BY STORM

The 2012 installment of “Carnival Puntarenas,” the third of the three “major” festivals of the season in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, proved to be another spectacular affair for the more than 40,000 music lovers who converged for the beach side concert in the capital city to see Jamaican reggae star Ky-mani Marley set the day to music.

When the young Marley, son of reggae icon Bob Marley, hit the stage backed the band Konfrontation, excitement and pandemonium broke out in anticipation of the tasty musical treat that was to follow. Marley blazed the stage for well over 120 minutes, delivering a dynamic litany of songs, from his father’s repertoire as well as some from his own catalogue. The multi talented singer proved his relevance with favourites like ‘Iron Lion Zion,’ ‘Is This Love,’ ‘One Love,’ ‘Get up Stand Up,’ ‘No Woman No Cry,’ ‘I Shot the Sheriff’ and originals like ‘Who We Are,’ ‘Rasta Love,’ ‘Ska-Ba-Dar’ and ‘Dear Dad’ – a song that pulls at the heartstrings of anybody who has lost a loved one.

Ky-mani’s humble yet high-energy style of delivery demonstrated that it was really about the music and exceeding fans’ expectations. He was inundated with requests for autographs and how he managed to sign them while performing is baffling. Pocketbooks and shirts were only a few of the articles patrons threw on stage for signatures.

Two encore performances later, the band was all set for shutdown, Ky-mani however obliged fans with a third and final encore performance. When he segued into the reggae anthem “One Love” the sea of patrons, obviously beguiled, appeared to be in a musical trance.

“The picturesque view of thousands singing all the songs word for word, knowing they neither spoke nor understood English demonstrates one thing, that the universal language spoken today is the language of love” Ms. Lexy Brooks of VIP Connected Entertainment said moments after Ky-mani left the stage.

Marley, who is working on a new album, from which a single will be released this summer, is also making time for his latest project “Love Over All Foundation” (L.O.A.F.) an organization he is spearheading to assist his Alma Mata, Falmouth All Age School, along with a number of schools in Jamaica

“I am trying to assist kids in Jamaica who, though obviously eager to learn, don’t have many of the basic tools such as lunch money, school supplies, computers and desks. I have donated some of these items but would love to put a program in place where the efforts are ongoing” he said.

Ky-mani personifies the name “Marley” by continuing to maintain the highest professional standards through music and the love of his fellow man, something Bob would undoubtedly be proud of. The Marley legacy clearly, continues through his children.

Dream Weekend party series extended to six days

Coinciding with the fact that 2012 marks Jamaica’ 50th year of independence, the four-year old event will now showcase more parties and attraction during the holiday stretch.

Dream Weekend promoter, Kamaal Bankay intimated that his brand always thought of expanding as they continue to re-invent the brand.
