Beres Hammond and Sizzla Receive 2014 Grammy Nominations for Best Reggae Album

The 2014 Grammy nominees were revealed on Friday, December 6th, 2013. Two titles released on VP Records, Beres Hammond’s One Love, One Life and Sizzla’s The Messiah, are in the running for the Best Reggae Album category.

Known to many as the “Otis Redding of Reggae,” Beres Hammond has been producing and pouring out his smoky-sweet vocals over every kind of riddim track for almost 40 years. VP Records released his latest Grammy-nominated, double-disc studio album One Love, One Life in November 2012. The release peaked at #1 on Billboard’s Top 10 Reggae Album chart and was hailed by Rolling Stone as “one of the best albums of a four-decade-long career.” The first disc One Love includes his signature classic lover’s rock sound, while the second disc One Life contains more of his socially-conscious, spiritually empowering tunes. Beres Hammond produced 19 of the 20 songs with co-producers Donovan Germain on “No Candle Light,” Collin “Bulby” York on “In My Arms” and Michael Fletcher on “More Time.”  This is Beres Hammond’s second Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album. The icon was considered in 2002 for his 2001 studio album Music Is Life.

This is Sizzla’s first Grammy nomination. Mostly written and executive produced by himself, Sizzla’s full scope of talents are displayed on his 70th effort The Messiah, which was released this May. As one of reggae’s most prolific artists, he showcases his musical depth, passion and precision on this 15-track collection inspiring positive change worldwide.  His social commentary on songs like “Chant Dem Down,” “No Wicked Man” and “Psalms 121″ reveal his daring bravado and righteous lyrics, while the melodic anthem “Good Love” unveils his softer side. The Messiah peaked at #1 on the South Florida Reggae Chart and New York Reggae Chart. With his fresh perspective, it is evident that Sizzla remains the reigning king of roots.

“We are very proud of Sizzla and Beres for this outstanding achievement. Each artist, who are both legends in their own right, created inspiring and groundbreaking material on their latest collections. They not only released some of their best work to date, but raised the bar for the genre,” he adds.

As one of music’s highly acclaimed artist with two multi-platinum albums, eight number one hits, twelve top ten singles worldwide, a diamond selling album and a Grammy for best reggae album, Shaggy is at it again.Out of Many, One Music puts Shaggy in a class of his own and shows the authenticity and creativity Shaggy is so well known for. The vibe of the album was inspired by deep grooves of pioneering roots Reggae band, Black Uhuru, to which Shaggy added his own flavor.

“Those hard Black Uhuru drum and bass tracks with my pop style of writing and melodies added a nice twist. I feel this album is really something solid and authentic”says Shaggy.

The lead single, Fight this Feeling is a duet with lover’s rock icon, Beres Hammond, set to a timeless Sly & Robbie rhythm, which has changed the Dancehall scene this summer, forcing DJs to play lovers rock during their set. Fight this Feeling is a modern day love song with excellent production from Sly & RobbieSting International and Lenky.

The second single released off, Out of Many, One Music, titled You Girl features R&B pop star, Ne-Yoand is currently number one on the Reggae iTunes charts. You Girl is a body roll- inducing love song that finds the fellas serenading a lucky young lady about how wonderful she is.

The remaining tracks on this 13-track album are all new and have not been released. Shaggy collaborated with many of the industry’s legends and upcoming Reggae and Dancehall sensations. This album gives you the opportunity to enjoy good reggae, great musical production and take a journey with Shaggy and some of his friends as they pay tribute to the culture and one of the many gifts given to the world from the island of Jamaica, Reggae.

Out of Many, One Music is not a new Shaggy album but a collaboration as he explains, between him and legendary Jamaican rhythm duo, Sly & Robbie.

“I’ve been criticized for years for not being authentic because of my pop success…People say I’m not this…I’m not that…Now I’m doing a Reggae album with the masters and people are saying it’s a game changer. The first 2 singles have already proven that to some extent! You be the judge on September 24th! says Shaggy.”

Beres Hammond reaches number one on Billboard chart

One Love, One Life coverReggae legend, Beres Hammond has been enjoying lots of international exposure in recent weeks and with good reason as his latest album has topped Billboard.

Hammond’s new album, One Love, One Life, peaked at number one on the Billboard Reggae Album chart in this, its fourth week on the chart. One Love, One Life, which debuted on November 13, has been in the top 5 of Billboard’s Reggae chart ever since its release and, according to SoundScan, has sold just under 2,200 copies to date.

Hammond’s creativity dominated on the double disc, as he produced or wrote 19 of its 20 tracks. The album contains several conscious and lover’s rock songs, the type of music that has made Hammond one of Reggae music’s greatest products.

This is the latest in a strong run in the United States for Hammond, who appeared on the Jimmy Fallon show over a week ago, where he promoted One Life, One Live and performed alongside Grammy-winning hip-hop/soul band, The Roots.

He followed that up by performing at the ground-breaking Sounds of Reggae concert inside Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on December 12 where he shared the stage with fellow, highly-acclaimed musicians such as Shaggy, UB40 and Maxi Priest. Two days later, Hammond performed at the Hard Rock Café in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

One Love, One Life is also available for purchase on iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/ca/album/one-love-one-life/id570381729 and is being distributed by VP Records, in collaboration with Hammond’s Harmony House label.

BERES HAMMOND SCORES LATE NIGHT TV DEBUT WITH JIMMY FALLON

Beres Hammond is scheduled to make his late night television debut on NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon show on Tuesday, December 11th, 2012.  The Grammy-nominated reggae icon will be greeted by Jimmy Fallon and sit in with The Roots to perform his hits in and out of the commercial breaks. The following day on December 12th, Beres Hammond will take over the new Brooklyn Barclays Center at the Sounds of Reggae Concert along with UB40, Maxi Priest and Shaggy. Beres Hammond will make the crowd melt performing his iconic songs as well as new material off his anticipated album One Love, One Life.

His new double-disc studio collection will be available November 13 on VP Records. Beres Hammond had a hand in producing 19 of the 20 songs. The first disc One Love includes his signature classic lover’s rock sound on new singles like “No Candle Light” and “Keep Me Warm,” while the second disc One Life contains more of his socially-conscious, spiritually-empowering tunes including “You Stand Alone,” “Truth Will Live On” and “Prime Time.”
Fans and critics alike have been eagerly awaiting this release. After the announcement, OKAYPLAYER raved “Beres Hammond is the Barry White of the Caribbean. He is also the Teddy Pendergrass of the Caribbean and the Frankie Beverly & Maze of the Caribbean. Which is to say he is the go-to babymaker, the best kept secret and the perennial crowd favorite who apparently does not know how to fall off–all rolled into one man.”

Whether Rihanna is quoting his lyrics on Twitter or Drake is retweeting that “Beres Hammond has to sing at my wedding,” Jamaica’s most prolific crooner has influenced some of the biggest stars today. Known to many as the “Otis Redding of Reggae,” Beres Hammond has been producing and pouring out his smoky-sweet voice over every kind of riddim track for over three decades.

From his early days as the lead singer of the ‘70s funk-reggae infused band Zap Pow,Beres has consistently produced number one hits and iconic reggae anthems still played today. While newcomers are searching for a breakthrough hit and old timers are plotting their comeback, Beres is a study in longevity.  He released his first studio album, Soul Reggae in 1976 spawning the number one hit “One Step Ahead” and in 1985 the dancehall breakthrough “What One Dance Can Do” off his self entitled album. He has collaborated with reggae’s elite—Marcia Griffiths andBuju Banton are virtually staples on any Beres tour—and has worked with legendary producers like Willie Lindo, Steely and Clevie, and Philip “Fattis” Burrell. In 1990, his album A Love Affair from Donovan Germaine’s Penthouse label raised his popularity to new heights. Cuts like “Tempted To Touch” and “Who Say” with Buju Banton are still huge in the dancehall today. During the ‘90s, Beres blazed a trail of modern classics for a variety of producers, from the strugglers’ anthem “Putting Up Resistance” (Tappa) to lovers’ laments like “Come Back Home” (Star Trail). In 2001, Beres brought us major hits like “They Gonna Talk” and “Rock Away” from his Grammy-nominated album Music Is Life. VP Records then released The Ultimate Collection: Can’t Stop A Man in 2003 to commemorate Hammond’s career, and in 2004 Love Has No Boundaries, which features his familiar romantic ballads and mid-tempo dancehall grooves. His last studio album A Moment In Time was released in 2008 and features his most recent smash hit “I Feel Good.” Beres Hammond’s track record of hits is unprecedented in reggae.

He has garnered an international fan base from his ceaseless touring schedule around the globe. He performs non-stop and has repeatedly sold out some of the country’s largest and most prestigious venues including the Theatre at Madison Square Gardenand Radio City Music Hall. He is also a star favorite among Alicia Keys, Carl Thomas and Wyclef Jean.

Beenie Man retrieves United States work permit

Internationally acclaimed Dancehall superstar, Beenie Man will finally return to a U.S. stage after his work permit to the North American country has been officially reinstated.

Despite being issued a United States visa last summer, Beenie Man has yet to perform at an event in the country since his work permit was revoked by the Embassy of the United States in Kingston over two years ago. As a result, the self-professed King of the Dancehall was unable to perform on BET’s 106 and Park alongside Trinidadian-American hip-hop megastar, Nicki Minaj as originally scheduled this past April.

However, Beenie Man will perform at the first ever Groovin’ In The Park concert on July 1 at Roy Wilkins Park in the New York based borough of Queens. CEO of Groovin Inc. Christopher Roberts announced that Beenie Man will be a headliner at his company’s upcoming event while expressing glee regarding the prominent deejay’s retrieval of his American work permit.

“I am extremely excited to announce that our booking agent here in New York was able to secure a work permit for the Dancehall king, Beenie Man to be a headline performer at this year’s ‘Groovin In the Park’ concert on July 1,” Roberts said in a statement.

“Music fans in the tri-state area have been waiting for a very long time for the opportunity to see Beenie Man perform live here in the USA again. I am glad we were instrumental in making it happen for the fans. Beenie Man is an extremely talented entertainer and we are happy that he will be again able to showcase his talents on stage in New York.”

Groovin’ In The Park will also feature Reggae legends, Beres Hammond and Jimmy Cliff as the show honors three nations celebrating milestone independence anniversaries this year: United States (236) as well as Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago who will both be celebrating golden anniversaries this year (50).

Beres Hammond Gives Toronto ‘A Moment In Time!’

beres

Backed by his Harmony House Band, Beres delivered an incredible show to thousands and thousands of fans who weathered torrential rain to see his performance at the staging of the 19th Annual Jamaica Day celebration in Toronto, produced by iPEG and Kaya Entertainment. Performing hit songs such as “Rockaway,” and “Tempted to Touch,” Beres could hardly get the words out as the massive crowd delivered his every word! Also performing songs from his 2008 album ‘Moment In Time,’ Beres delivered songs “Feel Good” and “No Goodbye” which unified the collective ‘rock’ of the crowd as they danced to his incredible performance.

After the show, Beres shared that he felt good about the performance, and was happy to be able to see his Toronto fans despite the heavy rain. “I feel Blessed” he said, “I’m happy we were able to perform and the fans had a good time!”

In addition to Jamaica Day, Beres performed at the Big Sexy in Oshawa, Ontario the night before which saw hundreds of fans treated to an up close and personal performance. The song “Putting Up Resistance” was especially well received as Beres reminded fans that despite Life’s pressures, we have to ‘put up resistance.’ Beres’s speech and performance became a little too much for one female fan who jumped on the stage to get a personal dance with Beres. Beres’s Manager and Security had to pry the lady from Beres, but not before she kissed him, and waved to the other ladies, triumphant at her closeness and saying “that’s right!”
