Jamaican dancehall artiste, Spragga Benz, was featured in Billboard's Best One-Hit Wonders of the 2000s for his collaboration with Kevin Lyttle. | By Steven Jackson

Spragga Benz named among Billboard’s Best One-Hit Wonders of the Decade

Jamaican dancehall artiste, Spragga Benz, was featured in Billboard’s Best One-Hit Wonders of the 2000s for his collaboration with Kevin Lyttle.

Benz was the only Jamaican artiste listed as a one-hit wonder by Billboard, the US based music company described as the Koran of music. Benz is a successful dancehall artiste with many local and regional hits. The definition of a One Hit Wonder related to the US market, as an artiste that hit the top 10 of Billboard Hot 100 singles chart without cracking the top 25 with subsequent hits in the decade.

Billboard added: “The one-hitmakers on this list have been ranked by how high their big song climbed on the chart compared to how far down the tally their subsequent highest-charting effort peaked.”

The song Turn Me On was Lyttle’s international hit on his self-titled album. It peaked at number four in August 2004 with Benz deejaying for 30 seconds mid-song whilst toasting the intro/outro.

“The airwaves have since turned him off, and the Caribbean crooner has yet to return to the Hot 100,” stated Billboard in the commentary on the artistes.

The St Vincent born Lyttle recorded the original Turn Me On, without Spragga Benz in 2001, he needed only two takes and less than an hour to record the song which became a local hit. Bootleg versions spread to Europe where the song gained underground spins. Atlantic Records released the single where it quickly peaked in the top ten in the U.K and US in 2003 and 2004 respectively.
