Nas and Damian Marley, “Strong Will Continue” MP3

That’s either a Rihanna imitator or a crew of prepubescent boys on the chorus. Nas and Damian Marley’s new track from their upcoming album as a duo, Distant Relatives, (a Best of Both Worlds for our times?), is definitely on a searing Lenny Kravitz guitar tip. The intro also sounds strongly of Christmas music. We’re a long way from Queensbridge. Not too far from Jamaica. Maybe we’re just off the coast of Florida. That’s about right. Rumor is they are changing the name of the album to Sanibel Island.

Nas, Damian Marley bring debate to Washington

Although an album has yet to be dropped, the Distant Relatives known as Nas and Damian Marley are still trying to leave their impact outside of the music. Teaming with National Geographic and V-Tech, the duo will have a panel debate next month in Washington D.C. Paying homage to the art of Hip Hop, the discussion will explore the origins of the genre and reveal what type of impact it has had across the globe. The event is set to take place at National Geographic’s Grosvenor Auditorium on December 12.

Of course a history lesson wouldn’t be as effective without relevant teachers, as the two will be accompanied by legends in the game such as Rakim, DJ Kool Herc, DJ Red Alert, Jeff Chang and more. Clearly a momentous occasion, MTVs own Sway Calloway will serve as the moderator for the event, which will also be filmed for a future documentary.

Fans will be in store for a surprise following the event as there will be an after party, as well as, an open-mic show at the nightclub Zanzibar. Tickets for the panel discussion are quite limited and will run for about $25, but the fee will also serve as a ticket into the party following.

Those that are unable to dig deep into their pockets shouldn’t be worried about missing the actual debate as it will be streamed live and broadcasted through National Geographic’s Web site.

In terms of the album, Distant Relatives is set to drop sometime in 2010.  Serving as a social commentary with content heavily revolving around Africa, features so far are rumored to include Young Jeezy, Joss Stone, Stevie Wonder, Stephen Marley, Snoop Dogg and K’naan.

Distant Relatives Rumored Track Listing. Is the Album On the Way?

Queensbridge native Nas has recently been in the news as of late, but unfortunately it has had nothing to do with his music. Dealing with Kelis and her money grubbing ways has taken the rapper out of the musical realm and his album with Damian Marley seemed to have been put on hold.

A rumored tracklist recently hit the net which would suggest that the album is actually still on the way, although no release date has been announced as of yet. The project was originally slated to hit shelves in August, but it’s clearly September now. As it stands, 2009 should be the year to expect the final project.

It was reported that a portion of the profits that come from the purchase of the album Distant Relatives will go towards building a school in Africa. See, Oprah isn’t the only person that cares.

Nas has stated that he is already in the process of beginning to work on his tenth studio album and should go into grind mode after the release of the collab album. After the release of Untitled it might be time to place heavy priority on this joint effort coming out quickly so Nas can continue the reign of lyricism in Hip-Hop that has emerged in 2009.

Referring to the tracks, it is evident that they were serious when they said the album was meant to put focus on Africa and bring it into the light for everyone to be aware of and acknowledge. The continent has been raped and gone through countless trials that it is still forced to endure, but it seems as though its problems don’t hit the radar in terms of significance to the overall picture of the world. Clearly an album will not change everything, but hopefully the two have compiled a body of work that will shake the foundation and open a few eyes to the motherland.

Rumored Tracklist for Distant Relatives:

1. Intro (Something New) (prod. Damian Marley)
2. As We Enter (prod. Damian Marley)
3. Revolutionary (prod. Damian Marley)
4. Count Your Blessings (prod. Damian & Stephen Marley)
5. Belief is Key (prod. Damian Marley)
6. Africa Must Wake Up f. K’naan (prod. Nas, Damian & Stephen Marley)
7. Black Horizon f. K’naan (prod. Damian Marley)
8. Only the Strong (prod. Damian & Stephen Marley)
9. Our Generation f. Joss Stone & Stevie Wonder (prod. Damian Marley)
10. Empowerment (prod. Stephen Marley)
11. AID (prod. K’naan & Nas)
12. Let’s End It (Poverty) f. K’naan (prod. 9th Wonder & Damian Marley)
13. The Earth f. Bob Marley (prod. Salaam Remix, Damian & Stephen Marley)
14. Black Man’s Paper f. Erykah Badu (prod. Afry) [UK Bonus]
15. Weed On f. Snoop Dogg (prod. Damian Marley) [iTunes Bonus]

Nas and Damian Marley Give Update On Distant Relatives

Nas & Damian Marley

Nas & Damian Marley

When Nas and Damian Marley hit the studio to work on a record inspired by Africa, they only planned on putting out an EP. But as the artists continued to invest themselves in the creative collaboration, the album that was supposed to contain only a few tracks, grew into something bigger, and eventually evolved into  a full length LP titled Distant Relatives.

Marley told Billboard.com, “Once we started working on the music, it was Nas who said to me, ‘Yo, we should just make this a full album.’ He really liked the energy, I guess.”

Nas added, “I just think it was me and Damian finding our way. When you have two different artists working on a record when they’re used to doing their own thing their own way, it’s not as easy as people may think. We just flowed, and the next thing we looked up and there were so many songs done or so many songs started and worked on…we just decided to keep it going. It’s not reggae. It’s not rap. It’s different shit for each of us.

The two recently previewed the album ,  shared some of their music with Rock The Bells crowds, and treated fans to records like “As We Enter,”  “Strong Will Continue,” and “Africa Must Wake Up,” all of which have garnered positive fan reactions.

I like to come out and tell the people live in person, ‘Yo, the album is coming’ and give them a little bit of music to start to get excited about it,” said Marley. “I think it also will help with the finishing of the album because we’re seeing how things work.

Nas said that the Rock The Bells Tour has allowed fans to get acclimated to the idea of him doing a full album with a prominent Reggae artist.

I know people are kind of like, ‘What’s happening? What’s Nas doing? What’s Damian doing? Is this really happening? So just being out here on the road we get a good feel from people about this whole thing.”

According to Nas, the album is 90% complete. He expressed plans to continue touring with Marley once the album is released. Originally set for a June release, Distant Relatives is scheduled to hit shelves in August.

Wayne Marshall Inks Deal With The Marley clan

By Basil Walters

marshall

MARSHAL... we've been working with the Marleys for like over a year and a half, and we just recently, very recently, inked a deal for the first album

Artiste Wayne Marshall, now in an alliance of sorts with the Marley clan, is poised to take his music to the next level. This perspective is born out of the recently signed album deal with the Marley’s Ghetto Youth outfit, with which he has been working for over a year and half.

We’ve been working with the Marleys for like over a year and a half, and we just recently, very recently, inked a deal for the first album which is still in the early stages,” the dancehall deejay with the signature sound “tru tru tru” revealed.

A household name in dancehall since the mid-90s, Marshall promised that by next year the album, which will be produced by Damian and Steven Marley on their Ghetto Youths’ imprint, will be ready.

“So I’m really looking forward to that which is really going to take my music to the next level with the expertise of Steve and Damian (Marley) at the controls,” he told the Observer.

The Jamaican artiste, born Wayne Mitchell, who shares stage name with the distinguished classical musican Wayne Marshall (British born pianist, organist, conductor), recently dropped his latest album called Good Love. Produced by Yaad Vibes Entertainment, Good Love is all about bringing back that authentic lovers rock groove.

Of the video for the lead single, he says, “I’ve made a conscious effort to try and bring a concept that has never been presented on a video format. It’s a one-drop song, it’s a lovers rock vibes. The song is Good Love, produced by Yaad Vibes Entertainment. And the concept is about me in a relationship and keeping the relationship alive by doing creative stuff,” Wayne Marshall explained.

“It’s kind of my way of expressing what I would do if I’m involved in a long term relationship and what other people out there can experiment with. It’s just a nice sexy vibes,” he added.

Asked to give his take on the Broadcasting Commission’s restrictions on certain types of dancehall music, Marshall who was a panelist discussing the issue at the Caribbean Studies Association conference, gave a measured response.

“My view on the bans and the restrictions is very intricate . because some stuff I agree with, some stuff I don’t. But generally, the restrictions and the new standard that has been set, I think is a very definite positive for the music,” he said, while stating that it can also stifle creativity.

“Because there must be some sort of creative expression where we can toe the line of what is to be edited and what can pass to play. Like a creative play on words. The way how you say something or add humour to it.”

He also called for a direct line of communication between the Broadcasting Commission and the artistes whereby a song can be sent to the commission for approval.
