New Artist Music: Vision – “We Jammin”

BUY NOW ON ITUNES

Music’s importance lies in the feelings it evokes in listeners, such is Vision’s aim with the hit bound reggae single “We Jammin”. Produced by Jon “fx” Crawford and Dubloise for Keynote Records, the feel good vibe of “We Jammin” brings nostalgic memories.

“We Jammin is a song that reflects the most memorable and happy  times of my life in Jamaica. Jammin means to kick back and relax, instead of saying Chillin or vibing, in Jamaica we just say Jam short for Jammin. The song tells you a lot about who I am and where I’m from. Living in America isn’t a bed of roses for most Jamaicans. Leaving our families behind and starting all over has its obstacles. So to past the time we jam reminisce on the good times back home in Jamaica. Thats what the song is about, its about we Jamaicans, even we immigrant. We all like Jammin in our own way.” stated Jamaican born singer/song writer Vision.

Proudly Jamaica has given reggae music to the world, iconic artists, legendary entertainers and music that stands the test of time. Vison’s “We Jammin” is sure to fall right into place with such distinctions as it boasts melodic hooks and authentic reggae vibe.

The single will be available for purchase on February 21st, 2014 on itunes.

For more information, and/or to request “We Jammin”, please e-mail [email protected]

Meet Jamaican born, singer-songwriter, Simon Mitchell, most infamously referred to by his stage name “Vision”. The name was inspired by Mitchell’s influential upbringing during his childhood stint as a member of his mother’s church choir. It was here that Vision decided that in all things life, he would be lead by faith and not by sight. Because of this mantra, following his musical transition to dance-hall, the international artist set out to create a promising new sound that he would later deem as “Roots Pop Reggae.”

But before there was Vision, there was Simon Alexander Mitchell. Born November 5 to a Jamaican mother and British-Jamaican father, Mitchell resided in England as a child while his father played professional soccer before later changing careers and moving Simon and his mother to Jamaica. It was here that the influence of the island’s strong musical culture would engulf Mitchell’s life and inspire him to become an artist. At the age of 12, the young boy was introduced to the piano, which he took to very well and would learn songs at a gifted pace. He’d soon realize his melodic knack for composing music. Fast-forward years later in which a football injury and a twist of fate would lead the former college athlete to a life of music. Read more..

Tessanne Chin – “I Just Want To Be A Wife”

Tessanne Chin The VoiceTessanne Chin has been pursuing music since she was in diapers in her native Jamaica, where her family even has a recording studio in their home. But the newly crowned winner of The Voice has more domestic aspirations on top of launching her musical career.

“There’s a music side of me and a dreamer, but really I just want to be a wife,” the gorgeous singer tells the New York Daily News.

The singer has talked a lot about her husband of two years, Michael Cuffe, throughout the season, and the affection she feels for him was easy to see. Michael was her biggest fan throughout the process, and Tessanne even joked about the fact that his reaction to her winning was bigger than hers.

“I think his reaction trumped mine,” she said about that fateful moment Carson Daly called her name. “He’s the best. He’s my rock.”

And, although she’s going to go gangbusters on her music career for now, she admits that domestic bliss is also a goal. In fact, she wants to own a farm back in Jamaica!

“Not a big farm, but I love animals and the thought of growing my own food,” she said.

“OMI” – New Artist Spotlight

One writer says, “Some men are born great, some achieve greatness, while others had greatness thrust upon them.” In the case of OMI (Omar Samuel Pasley) he was born a great singer! Hailing from Clarendon, Jamaica, OMI is last of the four children of Kenroy and Rachel Pasley. As a child growing up, he sang at every occasion that provided an audience – the church, school concerts or any other community gathering. Much to the delight of his onlookers, OMI would rise to the occasion once he got the opportunity.

OMI idolized his father and nurtured the desire to follow in his footsteps as a visual artist and musician. For him, this was no easy feat to accomplish, as his dad was not only outstanding at painting portraits, but also a great musician known in the industry as Jah Ken. However, before Jah Ken could pass-on all he knew about both vocations, he died of emphysema when OMI was nine years old. His dad’s passing left a vacuum in his world and as young as he was, OMI pledged to use his talents to keep his family anchored together.

He attended the May Pen Primary School, before moving to the Garvey Maceo High School where he started to shine as a true performer among his friends. OMI was captivated by the beats and ‘raw street poetry’ that coloured the hip-hop music genre, so much so, that during class breaks, his peers would take turns providing hip-hop beats while he rapped. His friends were fascinated with the cutting edge lyrics he spit and voiced their approval by drumming on the desks and chairs, while maintaining the rhythm to the lyrics he spun. It was at that moment OMI realized he could effortlessly create catchy melodies. As he grew older and his voice became more distinct, he found singing more to his liking. He enjoyed the latitude it gave him in putting more “soul” and creativity into his compositions.

OMI is the newest young discovery of international talent wizard, Clifton “Specialist” Dillon, who successfully produced and marketed such luminaries as Shabba Ranks, Patra and Italian reggae singer Alborosie. Discovered by Specialist three years ago, OMI is a prolific singer and songwriter inspired by music stars such as Nat King Cole, John Legend and Tanya Stephens. He enjoys reasoning on social, cultural and spiritual issues, from which he elicits material to incorporate into the body of his songs. The timbre of his voice is smooth, bright and compelling. OMI’s fluid vocal delivery and his contemporary songwriting skills will no doubt secure successive hits on both local and international charts. OMI is being groomed in all aspects of the music business under the direction of Kingston, Jamaica based Oufah Media & Production, spearheaded by Specialist, who is also producing his CD. He is currently in the studio laying tracks for his not-yet-titled debut album, of his self-penned songs, for which the intro singles “Standing On All Threes” and “Cheerleader” will be released shortly. Already on the scene is his “Firecracker” song, teasing music fans on YouTube. You are now officially forewarned: Prepare thyself to meet OMI!

Artist Spotlight : Etana

Etana  -  biography

It’s been five years since Jamaica’s reggae princess hit the music scene, and the genre has never looked back. Now, with two albums under her belt, Etana is a household name worldwide, with a voice and message that soothes and entertains.

Since Etana’s breakout hit Roots, the songbird has found herself as a staple on reggae charts across the globe. Following up with Wrong Address, the Strong One began to build a catalogue of conscious music… and a massive fan base.

Increasingly, her music connected with people through relatable messages of love, fighting injustice and prejudice, having pride and more.  “Overall, my music has to uplift. It can’t just be that I go in a studio and string words together. My music must have a message, it must have a purpose. It has to make people feel good and want to really listen to what I’m saying,” says Etana – who was born Shauna McKenzie.

In 2008 Etana released her debut album, The Strong One. It was a hit. The wildly successful debut album, recorded and released on the VP Records label, silenced critics who claimed Etana was a one-hit wonder. In fact, so popular and successful was The Strong One, that every one of the tracks on the album was released as a single – and also charted. The Strong One featured songs such as Warrior Love, Jah Chariot, Don’t Forget, I Am Not Afraid, Blessing, More & More, Caltariba System as well as her first two hits Roots and Wrong Address.

More than that, Etana had spread her wings and was filling clubs and stadiums in the Caribbean, North America and Europe – and it was a humbling experience.   “Travelling to another country to perform is perhaps one of the most exciting things for me. Especially if it is a country where English isn’t the first language. Being in Portugal or Spain, for example and hearing a crowd of 100,000 people sing every one of your songs word for word is just exhilarating”.

While touring, Etana also picked up a new hobby – collecting award trophies. Since her berth in the music world, she has copped one prestigious musical honour after another. Ranging from Best New Artiste, Female Vocalist of the Year and Reggae Singer of the Year to Most Admired Female Artiste, Cultural Artiste of the Year and several Album of Year trophies, Etana has a sizeable list of accolades behind her name.

Etana began to tease fans with what was to come on her next CD when she released Free, Happy Heart and August Town. Almost immediately, critics clamoured and fans anxiously awaited the release of her sophomore attempt at a full-length album. She continued to record, and in 2011 released Free Expressions. With this, Etana pulled off what many artistes are unable to – a successful second album. Free Expressions is lining up to be as successful as its predecessor with several of its featured tracks being released as singles.

“This time around, I got really involved in the making of the album. For The Strong One there were a team of writers but it’s pretty much all me and my pen in the majority of the songs on Free Expressions. That was an experience I enjoyed, and I am definitely more into writing these days,” the now married artiste says.

Crowds around the world seem to enjoy Etana’s increased input in this album, evidenced by her performing consistently on the biggest reggae festivals and shows around the world. In fact, Etana made her debut in South America in 2011.   “I’ve been blessed with this talent, and I don’t plan on slowing down for now,” she smiles. Etana has two more albums to be released by VP Records, and she promises that she’ll try and make it her best work yet each time.

Junior Kelly Back In Jamaica After Successful Fall European Tour.

Reggae singer Junior Kelly is back home in Jamaica after a very successful fall European tour, which kicked off last October in Amiens, France. Even hurricane Sandy hitting Jamaica, weather conditions grounding flights and closing the Island airports couldn’t put a damper on him. He remained in high spirit and great energy.

Kelly departed as soon as the country airport in Montego Bay reopened on the Thursday, October 25 late evening right before his Friday, October 26 performance. With no time to spare as he landed, Junior Kelly was up for his meet and greet, press and straight to his scheduled performance.

Full of energy, good form and positively great vibes, Junior delivered his hits to the delight of eager fans. Taking the crowd on a melodic musical journey with classic songs such as “Love So Nice” to his latest hit “Been There” video. The tour took Kelly and his band through the Netherlands, France, Austria, Switzerland and Italy.

Reflecting on his tour Junior stated, “The energy and vibe i received from the fans during this tour was truly amazing and humbling and it was heart warming to see that people out there are still crying out for conscious music, my music, Reggae music”

“Its really beautiful to see three generations of people coming out to my concerts and enjoying and loving Reggae music, so i know it will live on”

“I really appreciate the fact that i am able to perform every day of the week and the fans came out in their numbers every night to listen to Reggae music, even in these harsh economic times when buying a concert ticket is so hard. These die-hearted fans in Europe are mainly from the poorer class of society and they have so many other choices in terms of artistes or food or paying a bill, but they come out because they see me as one of the young roots artistes whose messages make them feel good and one that is going to stand the test of time. It is truly a blessing and an honor.”

ETANA UNLEASHES REGGAE

Etana, the Jamaican-born, Miami-raised songstress, returns with her brand new digital-only EP Reggae on November 13th with VP Records. The 3-song preview off her upcoming studio album Better Tomorrow will give fans a taste of what is to come in February 2013. The entire set is produced by Shane Brown with Stanley “Rellee” Hayden co-creating the title track.

The charismatic singer, songwriter and performer incorporates elements of reggae, soul and pop into her captivating postmodern sound that tackles real life experiences. Etana’s unabashed romanticism shines on the soulful sway of “Reggae” and the r&b tinged “4 Play 2 Love (Start Over)” about her torn feelings of two lovers. The spine-chilling single “Better Tomorrow” addresses the atrocities of children in poverty-stricken communities, while instilling optimism for brighter days. Etana’s lyrical depth and revolutionary thought continue to impress and inspire her audience.

With a baby on the way, new EP and album in the works, Etana is in a place in her life where she looks forward to a promising future. She expands upon her 2010 sophomore album Free Expressions, which won praise for the being “a rarity: music that sermonizes, yet still sweetly serenades,” according to NPR. The anticipated album Better Tomorrow and EP Reggaeexpress a similar sentiment, while offering new-found wisdom and clarity. These releases also follow her 2008 critical acclaimed debut The Strong One, which featured massive hits “Warrior Love,” “Roots” “I’m Not Afraid,” “Blessings” and “Wrong Address” that topped reggae charts in The Caribbean, England and United States. During this period, Etana was nominated for Best New Reggae Artist at MOBO Awards and awarded Best Female Vocalist at both the Excellence in Music & Entertainment (EME) Awards and IRIE FM Radio Awards as well as the Best Solo Female Reggae Vocalist at the 1st annual Reggae Academy Awards. Vibe Magazine claimed she had already “established herself as a formidable performer and songwriter whose music and reputation precedes her.”

Reggae Track Listing:

  1. Reggae
  2. Better Tomorrow
  3. 4 Play 2 Love (Start Over)

Sotho (one of the tribes found in South Africa). He was musically incline and
dominantly played the bass guitar within his teenage years; and contributed

Junior Kelly scores # 1 with the hit single “Been There”

After 15 weeks on the Jamaica Music Countdown Top 25 Reggae Singles Chart, singer Junior Kelly has convincingly captured the number one slot with the gripping, reality-laced  single, “Been There“.
Chart-watchers had early predicted  that “Been There” would have enjoyed exciting chart success, noting that there was a strong possibility of it taking over the pole position. Well, it’s ‘Mission Accomplished’. They are now eyeing the song’s progress on the long-running New York Reggae Singles Chart, where it now sits in the number 6 spot and is steadily making upward movements. Kellyhas also dominated the popular Stampede Street Chart, where he has been singled out as ‘Artiste of the Week‘.
On the Broadleaf riddim, produced by Big Bomb Entertainment, “Been There” adds to Junior Kelly’s list of songs which have impacted in a huge way. Among them are the  “Sunshine,” “Boom Draw“, “Hungry Days,” Missing You (with Bar-bee)”, “Receive” and the blockbuster, breakout single, “Love So Nice“, which spent a record 15 weeks at number one.
The single, which was driven by the music video, is currently getting good rotation across the globe and Kelly himself has been busy on the promotional trail, ensuring that “Been There”  forms part of his  live set.
He explained that the initial response to the song was so overwhelming that he did the music video ahead of schedule. The video, which has a simple and effective storyboard, sees Kelly playing the role of a taximan, as he belts out the lyrics to the song.
“I give thanks to all those who worked assiduously to make this single number one. Naturally, it’s a good feeling when fans endorse your music and it gives me the encouragement to continue along this path,” the conscious Rastafarian commented.
Junior Kelly, who has been enjoying a strong season of success, both in Jamaica and overseas, has easily reclaimed his space in the US market after an hiatus. His performance in Brooklyn at the Rose Garden on July 8 was so powerful that he was immediately booked for a second show to be held at the VillageNY on July 22.  Kelly gave a masterful performance at the Bayfront Reggae Festival,Minnesota, last Saturday, alongside Jamaican artistes Ce’cileAnthony B and Gramps Morgan.
Fans will be treated to another side of Junior Kelly on SundayJuly 29, at Weaver High School, Hartford Connecticut. He will be participating in the annual Celebrity Soccer Games, an event which he is quite enthusiastic about.
Junior Kelly has been in the business of making uplifting and empowering reggae music for more than 25 years. Beginning his career during Dancehall’s ‘rude boy’ era in the late ’80s, Kelly’s inspiring messages have always made him a standout artist within Jamaica’s heavily populated entertainment scene.
His breakthrough single “Love So Nice” established him as a bonafide star in 2000. His commanding juxtaposition of precisely timed, deejayed rhymes and melodic singing, coupled with his vivid storytelling abilities, took the song to #1 on the Jamaican charts. The album “Love So Nice“, released in 2001, also spawned the well-received singles which brought him recognition throughout the Caribbean, North America, and Europe.

Reggae artist Jiimmy Cliff to play free Brooklyn concert

Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff will perform a free concert in Prospect Park to kick off this year’s Celebrate Brooklyn! concert series, organizers said Tuesday.

The 63-year-old Jamaican star is known for hits like “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” “Many Rivers to Cross,” and “The Harder They Come,” which helped make reggae mainstream.

“He’s been on our wish list for a long time,” said Jack Walsh, director of performing arts for BRIC Arts Media Brooklyn, which puts on the series. “I think in particular he really resonates in Brooklyn across all tupes of audiences. Obviously in Brooklyn we have a large Jamaican community that he’ll be instantly recognizable to.

“In his later years he’s become a fastastic crossover artist, and we think that really resonates well for all of Brooklyn,” he said.

Cliff will perform on June 5 at 8 p.m. at the Prospect Park Bandshell. The rest of the Celebrate Brooklyn! line up will be rolled out in the coming weeks.
