Vybz Kartel and Elephant Man have trials postponed

Two of Dancehall’s most coveted entertainers will have to wait a while to have their days in court to answer serious charges they stand accused of.

One of the highly anticipated murder trials involving Dancehall superstar, Adidja ‘Vybz Kartel’ Palmer has been postponed until December 3 of this year.

Kartel was due to answer charges pertaining the July 2011 killing of St. Catherine businessman, Barrington ‘Bossie’ Burton on Monday. However, the matter was put off when the self-professed ‘Worl’ Boss’ appeared inside the Corporate Area Resident Magistrates Court in Kingston yesterday after one of his defense attorneys, Cristian Tavares-Finson revealed that prosecutors in the murder case indicated that they weren’t ready.

Kartel faces charges of murder, conspiracy to murder and illegal possession of a firearm in the Barrington ‘Bossie’ Burton and was granted JA$3 million bail in the matter earlier this year. However, the former Portmore Empire leader cannot post that bail as he remains in custody for murder and obstruction of justice related charges pertaining to the killing of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams in August 2011.

Vybz Kartel will stand trial alongside four other men on November 5 with regards to the murder case. Seven days later, ‘Di Teacha’ will return to court to begin his conspiracy trial in which he, Vanessa ‘Gaza Slim’ Saddler and Andre ‘Pim Pim’ Henry are accused of attempting to pervert the course of justice in the Williams case.

Meanwhile, fellow Dancehall superstar, Oneil ‘Elephant Man’ Bryan has been issued a new court date in his ongoing rape case as the prominent deejay is scheduled for a February 11, 2013 appearance.

Like Kartel, Elephant Man appeared inside the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on Monday where he was due to answer to charges of rape and sexual assault stemming from an alleged incident this past January involving a 31-year-old woman at his St. Andrew home. However, the Pon Di River singer’s case was reportedly put off due to an outstanding forensic report, amongst other things.

Elephant Man will remain on JA$400,000 bail until the February date. The embattled deejay originally posted said bail in February.

Busy Signal’s manager speaks out on the deejay’s prison stay, future in music

With embattled Dancehall/Reggae superstar, Busy Signal just under two months away from regaining his freedom, the entertainer’s esteemed manager has illustrated a very thought-provoking picture of his client’s prison experience.

Busy Signal was slapped a six month sentence last week Friday for absconding bail in relation to a 2002 drug case in the American state of Minnesota. However, given that the Reggae Music Again singer had already served time in Jamaica and the United States in relation to the matter, presiding judge, Donovan W. Frank ruled that Busy Signal would be released on November 21 and will subsequently be given 45 days to leave the North American country.

But before Busy can one again return to his musical exploits, the internationally acclaimed singjay will be focused on regaining full health after a rigorous stay at the Sherbourne County Jail in Minnesota. In an interview with Irish and Chin Inc. radio outlet, Sound Chat Radio, Busy’s manager, Shane Brown painted a grim picture of his client’s life behind bars, revealing that the entertainer would only be fed fish once a week, would never see sunlight and has lost considerable weight and energy while in jail.

“Busy has lost quite a bit of weight…closer to 12-15 pounds. He’s very weak and he’s not eating right ‘cause Busy just prefer to hol’ it and eat some crackers and some juice fi all a week straight,” he said.

Elephant Man faces June court date in rape case

Internationally renowned Dancehall superstar, Elephant Man will have to wait a while longer before having an opportunity to answer to a rape charge.

The prominent deejay’s rape case was put off following a hearing inside the Corporate Area Resident Magistrates on Monday. As a result, the self-professed Energy God was assessed a June 28 court date where he will answer to charges of rape and grievous sexual assault.

The charges stem from an alleged incident at Elephant Man’s Hillcrest Avenue residence in St. Andrew this past January. Law enforcement officials relayed that a police report was filed by a woman claiming she was sexually assaulted at the artiste’s home.

Following an investigation by the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA) and a question-answer session in the presence of his lawyer, Elephant Man was slapped with rape and sexual assault charges.

Elephant Man has steadfastly denied the allegations, insisting that he would never put himself in such a position given his status as a role model and the responsibilities he bears in music.

Beenie Man out of STING 2011…unless Laing apologizes

Internationally-acclaimed Dancehall artiste, Moses Davis, more popularly known as Beenie Man will be a notable absentee from this year’s edition of the popular STING stage show.

With STING 2011 almost sure to miss fellow established deejay, Vybz Kartel, due to his current legal troubles, Beenie Man announced on Thursday that he would not participate in the stage show. STING 2011 will take place on December 26 at Jamworld in Portmore, St. Catherine.

In a press release, Beenie Man publicly chastised STING 2011’s main organizer, Isaiah Laing for remarks made about him whilst appearing on a local television show. The Let’s Go deejay intimated that he would not perform at the stage show unless received a thorough explanation regarding Laing’s comments.

“How (Isaiah) Laing fi go pon TV and mek dem speech de say we ah old artistes and caan do nothing fi him show. Him no respect the dancehall veterans who help to build the industry in no way. Every year, him attempt  fi disrespect we in some way, and mi not doing Sting this year unless Laing come explain to me what him mean by ‘old artiste’. If Bounty waan a clash, him haffi link me at some other show,” he said.

Additionally, Beenie Man revealed that long-time rival, Bounty Killer and fellow deejay, Elephant Man asked him to perform at a show their organizing for New Year’s Eve. However, the prominent Dancehall artiste claims that Bounty accused him of running from a possible lyrical clash at STING 2011; accusing the “War Lord” of sucking up to Laing.

“Killer and Ele come to me up at Suzie’s and say which part we ah go keep our show. Mi check it out and did a plan fi use Jamalco inna Clarendon and do the show on December 31st. And now mi hear Killer ah say mi a run from clash but mi fraida Killer, mi nah run, and mi will clash him at another show apart from Sting. Killer bow too much, look how easy him mek Laing bring him in and ah use him fi bring mi in,” Beenie Man said.

Despite his grouse with Laing, Beenie Man insisted that he still believes STING is a great showcase for younger artistes to announce themselves on a mainstream level. However, he believes that while they are promoting growth artistes on the come-up, they’re disrespecting veteran artistes.

“Sting is a good show and we need it fi continue fi help buss the next generation of artistes, but mi just no like how dem treat the artistes who inna the industry. Look how me and Killer ah do clash song and ah build a vibes and him come pon TV and just kill the clash song dem right inna the middle of the promotion, and den him ah come draw back fi we after him dun diss we. Mi caan deal wid it no more, Beenie Man said.

Last year, STING had two notable absentees from their stage show when Vybz Kartel and his former rival, Mavado were no-shows for the event; triggering a low turnout. The launch for this year’s show took place at the Wyndham Hotel on Wednesday.

Elephant Man robbed of valuables days ahead of international tour

Internationally-acclaimed deejay, Oneil “Elephant Man” Bryan has become the latest Dancehall act to have valuables stolen from him during a performance.

The Pon Di River singer attended an event in New Kingston on Monday night; parking his Toyota Corolla near to the venue. However, upon returning to the parking lot, he noticed that one of the car’s rear windows was smashed and two bags were missing. In said bags contained important travel documents as well as a copy of the video for his single, Survivor, featuring Alliance leader, Bounty Killer.

“Mi passport, mi documents, mi just get a copy of the brand new video for Survivor and a today it did fi come pon RE TV. The studio stuff, mi hard drive, laptop, mi need the whole a dem back. It’s a Gucci bag and a black travel pack,”Elephant Man told the Jamaica STAR on Tuesday.

Elephant Man urged that the bandits to return the stolen documents and studio equipment immediately; pleading for thieves to stop breaking into innocent people’s vehicles and stealing important, personal material. However, the “Energy God” was quick to call out security officials who were on-hand outside the event.

“How security deh deh and my things gone?” Elephant Man asked before pointing out instances in which friends recently had their cars broken into by thieves.

Meanwhile, Elephant Man’s predicament came just days prior to his upcoming international tour which kicks off this weekend.

“Mi fi go pon tour weekend and mi need back mi stuff dem. I am going Europe and Africa for three weeks and then I am going to Haiti. I already take the promoters’ money so I need back mi stuff. If dem can just drop it off at any Alliance corner, throw it over the fence, whatever. Nobody inna Jamaica nuh fava mi, so you can’t travel on my stuff,” Elephant Man said.

In August, veteran Dancehall deejay, Charmaine “Macka Diamond” Munroe was robbed of valuables during a performance inside the Louise Bennett Theatre in Kingston. Included in the stolen materials were travel documents for her and her son, who goes to school in the United States, as well as her driver’s license, credit cards and other materials.

Jah Cure omitted from MOBO Awards due to previous convictions

Internationally acclaimed Reggae artiste, Siccature Alcock, more popularly known as Jah Cure has been omitted from the Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards’ list of contenders for the Best Reggae Act award due to prior convictions.

United Kingdom newspaper, The Sun confirmed on their website that Jah Cure was dropped from the category due to his past convictions on gun possession & rape charges stemming from an alleged 1999 incident when the singer was just 19 years old. Cure spent 8 years in jail for the offenses prior to his release in 2007 and whilst maintaining his innocence regarding the allegations to date, he has released a plethora of hit singles such as “Unconditional Love,” “Call On Me,” featuring Phyllisia, “You’ll Never Find” & “Like I See It” featuring popular Dancehall singjay, Mavado & American hip-hop superstar, Rick Ross.

Jah Cure’s removal from the MOBO Awards nominees list is not the first of its kind for a Jamaican artiste. In 2004, Dancehall heavyweights, Vybz Kartel & Elephant Man, who were also nominated for the Best Reggae Act award, were axed from the category after allegedly singing homophobic lyrics

The show has featured a myriad of top-ranking, international acts from differing genres such as Janet Jackson, Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Rihanna, Kanye West, LL Cool J, Usher & the late Amy Winehouse to name a few. Gyptian won the Best Reggae Act award last year; facing competition from the like of Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, Vybz Kartel, Mavado & U.K based Dancehall/Reggae artiste, Gappy Ranks.

Jah Cure recently made headlines for his highly publicized wedding last month; marrying Jamaican media personality, Kamila McDonald at a private ceremony at the Tryall Club, close to the singer’s place of birth in Montego Bay.

Corey Todd, Elephant Man get November trial dates

Prominent American businessman, Corey Todd will head back to court November 16th as he will stand trial in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court to answer a charge of assault stemming from an incident on August 3rd inside Club Riddim.

The plaintiff in the case, Stone Love selector, Dwayne “Bill Cosby” Burke accused Todd of using a box of CDs to assault him after he played a Vybz Kartel song that allegedly dissed Todd during the event, Swag Tuesdays at Club Riddim. Burke claims that Todd, who owns Club Riddim, approached him after playing a series of Vybz Kartel songs, including the diss song aimed at the American entrepreneur.

Todd initially threw a cup on Cosby before dropping a banner on his head. When both attempts to stop the selector from playing the songs failed, Todd then allegedly approached him with a box of CDs; throwing them on Cosby & causing his hand to swell. Burke then reported the matter & Todd was summoned to court last week to answer a charge of assault occasioning bodily harm. On the contrary, Todd’s attorney, Everton Dewar claimed that Todd is innocent of the charge; intimated that his client threw the box at the artiste but it bounced on the turn table and did not hit Burke.

Chris Brown And Usher Unite Onstage In Jamaica

Photo: Robert Keshishian/ Newscom
…………………………………………………………….

While Chris Brown has always made it clear that he looks to Michael Jackson for inspiration, there are nearly as many parallels to be made between Brown and Usher. And last weekend, Breezy joined Usher on stage during the Reggae SumFest 2010 in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The duo wowed audiences in the concluding night of the festival.

Brown had already performed his own set on Friday, tearing through songs like “Run It” and “Forever” and showing off his formidable dancing skills. But it was his surprise appearance during Usher’s set the following day that really set the crowd off. According to TheChrisBrownBlog.com, the two were also joined onstage by Elephant Man and later engaged in a dance-off.

Video footage from the performance had not surfaced online at press time, but photos reveal the two singing together and even showing some affection with an onstage hug.

Brown took to Twitter Saturday to thank Jamaica. “I wanna thank you Jamaica for your wonderful embrace last night at the show,” he wrote. “Next time well do passa passa … lmao … (oh hell naw). Love ya!”

Later on Saturday, he tweeted about performing with Usher. “Me and Usher killin Jamaica right now,” he wrote.

When Chris burst on the music scene five years ago, he was overcome with excitement when meeting Usher. “To see him face-to-face, I was like, ‘OK, Chris, it’s gonna be all right, just chill out right quick. You about to do the song, man, don’t be no punk,’ ” Brown told MTV News about recording a song that was later featured in Usher’s 2005 film “In the Mix.”

Reggae artistes blacklisted

GERMANY, Europe’s largest economy, has blacklisted 11 dancehall albums between 2008 and January 2010 this year because of their homophobic and violent content.

Albums by Sizzla, Elephant Man, Bounty Killer, Capleton, TOK and Baby Cham are on this list, or “index”, compiled by the German Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons (BPjM) Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien in German.

Stakeholders counter that up to 35 dancehall albums or songs had been blacklisted since the BPjM’s conception including Legalise It by reggae icon Peter Tosh, which was later removed.

The BPjM told the Sunday Observer that it is illegal to advertise these albums or to sell them to minors in Germany, with additional restrictions placed on their sale and distribution. “Breach of …[the] indexing is punishable by a fine or imprisonment,” stated Corinna Bochmann, BPjM spokesperson, in response to Sunday Observer queries.

Ten of the 11 albums were not only considered “harmful to young people” but also contained violent lyrics, according to the BPjM, with lyrics that incite hatred and propagate to kill homosexuals. The BPjM indexed these albums following complaints by certain groups such as the German gay lobby. “The BPjM can only act on the request of other administrative institutions, not by itself. Once an official request has been filed, the BPjM is obliged to act,” stated Bochmann.

Ellen Köhlings, editor of German reggae magazine Riddim told the Sunday Observer that dancehall is ironically filliping the gay lobby’s agenda. “These lyrics violate German laws which gives the lobbyists legal grounds to successfully censor music and gain media exposure,” Köhlings said.

“The gay lobby is looking for cheap forwards just like some artistes look for a cheap forward,” she stated.

Köhlings added that artistes could compromise by maintaining their anti-gay stance but avoid the use of violence. “At the end of the day there are much more urgent things to talk about than homophobia, and artistes should leave out, in my mind, the violent bashing of gays.”

Riddim magazine has at times assumed the role of dancehall mediator, as the industry has no lobby in Germany: “We have been doing everything we can to restore the image of Jamaica, but we can do only so much. In the long run Jamaica needs to take action,” Köhlings noted.

Violent anti-gay lyrics have been a feature of dancehall music for over 15 years with the Buju Banton classic Boom Bye Bye credited as its progenitor. The international gay lobby, in response, has petitioned the German government to ban shows and the sale of records by these artistes. Last year, Banton and Beenie Man were yanked from shows due to the lobby in the US, Australia and New Zealand. Local gay organisation J-Flag told the Sunday Observer that Jamaican deejays are not being unfairly attacked by the international gay community.

“Their music promotes violence, hate and hardship for members of a community that at no time has threatened or hurt them in any way. This is an unwarranted and unprovoked assault on a set of people who have a right to exist,” stated Jason McFarlane, J-Flag programmes manager. He added that dancehall artistes who continue to perform “hate-filled music” must be held accountable. “The influence of music on any society must not be under-estimated. What must be understood is that artistes have a right to express what they feel but also must be held responsible for the possible impact they can have on people. Music, in particular Reggae and Dancehall, is universal and so we must be aware of the wide reach of the possible influence of any one artiste.”
