Vybz Kartel conspiracy trial postponed until October 27

Vybz Kartel 2014As he currently serves a life sentence on a murder conviction, embattled Dancehall superstar, Adidja ‘Vybz Kartel’ Palmer is expected back in court on October 27 after his conspiracy trial, which was expected to get underway this week Monday at the Corporate Area Resident Magistrates Court in Kingston was postponed twice.

The case was initially set to begin on Monday, but was postponed following a flurry of issues, according to reports, including unsettled legal representation for co-accused, Andre ‘Pim Pim’ Henry and the absence of a defence attorney and witnesses. When the case was again mentioned on Thursday, more witness issues were uncovered while Henry’s lawyer, Peter Champagnie withdrew from representing the accused due to unfulfilled financial obligations, thus forcing the judge to set the new date.

The judge was reportedly annoyed by this development, telling the prosecution, You ensure that you do what you have to do cause no matter what, the only thing that can prevent the case from starting is if the Lord says so.”

Palmer is jointly charged with Henry and fellow entertainer/protégé, Vanessa ‘Gaza Slim’ Saddler for perverting the course of justice after Saddler allegedly filed a false police report suggesting she was robbed and gun-butted by Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams, the man who Palmer was convicted of killing this past March.

The report was filed five days after Kartel was charged with Williams’ murder in October 2011. He, Saddler and Henry were charged with perverting the course of justice later that year as they are alleged to have attempted to interfere with the police’s investigation into Williams’ murder.

Vybz Kartel is not eligible for parole for another 35 years. He is currently appealing his conviction.

Dancehall artistes concerned about increase of gay prostitution, want it stopped

485447318_edb02ab8c1The topic of homosexuality in Jamaica has long been a hot and divisive one amongst Jamaicans; particularly artistes, who have continuously affirmed strong stances against it. Another issue amongst gays has raised eyebrows in the local music industry once more.

In Kingston, a growing number of homosexual prostitutes have been offering their services to passers-by, particularly in and around the New Kingston area. Though that particular part of Kingston is notorious for prostitution, the growing number of male prostitutes has raised qualms amongst citizens and the Dancehall community.

One such member of that community is ex-Portmore Empire singer and Vybz Kartel protege, Gaza Slim, who insists these gay prostitutes should be moved off the streets immediately.

Vybz Kartel and Elephant Man have trials postponed

Two of Dancehall’s most coveted entertainers will have to wait a while to have their days in court to answer serious charges they stand accused of.

One of the highly anticipated murder trials involving Dancehall superstar, Adidja ‘Vybz Kartel’ Palmer has been postponed until December 3 of this year.

Kartel was due to answer charges pertaining the July 2011 killing of St. Catherine businessman, Barrington ‘Bossie’ Burton on Monday. However, the matter was put off when the self-professed ‘Worl’ Boss’ appeared inside the Corporate Area Resident Magistrates Court in Kingston yesterday after one of his defense attorneys, Cristian Tavares-Finson revealed that prosecutors in the murder case indicated that they weren’t ready.

Kartel faces charges of murder, conspiracy to murder and illegal possession of a firearm in the Barrington ‘Bossie’ Burton and was granted JA$3 million bail in the matter earlier this year. However, the former Portmore Empire leader cannot post that bail as he remains in custody for murder and obstruction of justice related charges pertaining to the killing of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams in August 2011.

Vybz Kartel will stand trial alongside four other men on November 5 with regards to the murder case. Seven days later, ‘Di Teacha’ will return to court to begin his conspiracy trial in which he, Vanessa ‘Gaza Slim’ Saddler and Andre ‘Pim Pim’ Henry are accused of attempting to pervert the course of justice in the Williams case.

Meanwhile, fellow Dancehall superstar, Oneil ‘Elephant Man’ Bryan has been issued a new court date in his ongoing rape case as the prominent deejay is scheduled for a February 11, 2013 appearance.

Like Kartel, Elephant Man appeared inside the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on Monday where he was due to answer to charges of rape and sexual assault stemming from an alleged incident this past January involving a 31-year-old woman at his St. Andrew home. However, the Pon Di River singer’s case was reportedly put off due to an outstanding forensic report, amongst other things.

Elephant Man will remain on JA$400,000 bail until the February date. The embattled deejay originally posted said bail in February.

Popcaan still loyal to Kartel despite reported fallout

Despite rampant speculation that Popcaan has fallen out with long-time mentor, Vybz Kartel, the self-professed ‘Fry Yiy’ continues to back the former Portmore Empire leader.

Several reports have emerged in recent months regarding growing tensions between Popcaan and Vybz Kartel, with former Empire members such as Gaza Slim, Lisa Hyper and Tommy Lee speaking out on the matter. With all three artistes admitting that problems exist between Popcaan and his mentor, Kartel himself released a statement publicly chastising him and Tommy Lee for their perceived disloyalty and ‘opportunist’ behavior displayed since he was initially incarcerated last September.

Following the statement’s release, fellow Ex-Empire deejay, Lisa Hyper called out Kartel regarding his claims of betrayal while Tommy Lee appeared on TVJ’s Entertainment Report, insisting he couldn’t explain why the self-proclaimed ‘Worl’ Boss’ would lash out against him.

Tifa and Lisa Hyper

Lisa Hyper calls out Tifa

Another catfight may be brewing within the Dancehall industry as prominent ‘Gaza’ diva, Lisa Hyper has called out internationally acclaimed deejay, Tifa, branding her an undercover troublemaker.

Lisa Hyper and Tifa have been at odds ever since the former artiste was embroiled in a sex photo scandal in 2009 that made her a subject of ridicule amongst music lovers and industry players alike. For a while it seemed that the bad feelings steadily subsided as time elapsed, that is, until a Blackberry Broadcast Message issued by Lisa Hyper emerged in which she dissed Tifa while making reference to the Hold On deejay’s physical disability.

“How Tifa fi waan run the place and she cannot even walk? Just asking peeps”. Bwoy, mi have a handicap cousin so mi no find it amusing, somebody caan talk to her and tell her fi just chill out a little. No man, she ah go too hard,” the message read.

Vybz Kartel to stand trial in November regarding conspiracy case

Embattled Dancehall superstar, Vybz Kartel faces a third trial date within a two week span as the prominent deejay faces a mid-November court appearance regarding obstruction of justice related charges.

With his murder trials set to begin on October 29 and November 5 respectively, Kartel was ordered to appear in court in November 12 where he faces a charge of perverting the course of justice. The trial was initially set to begin on Wednesday inside the Corporate Area Resident Magistrates Court in Kingston, but got pushed back due to the absence of the presiding judge as well as the non-disclosure of statements to the defense.

Kartel’s long-time protégé, Vanessa ‘Gaza Slim’ Saddler and studio engineer, Andre ‘Pim Pim’ Henry are co-accused of perverting the court of justice in the matter. Both Saddler and Henry were granted bail extensions while Kartel was remanded into police custody.

Law enforcement officials slapped the charge on Kartel and his associates two months after Gaza Slim filed a police report at the Constant Spring Police Station, claiming that she had been robbed and gun-butted by Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams in Havendale, St. Andrew. Gaza Slim filed the report on October 29, five days after Vybz Kartel copped a murder charge as he and three other men are accused of murdering Williams at a Havendale residence last summer.

Kartel is slated to stand trial in the Clive Williams murder case on November 5.

Vybz Kartel and Tommy Lee

Vybz Kartel questions loyalty of top ‘Gaza’ artistes

As if there wasn’t enough drama resulting from the recent dissolution of the Portmore Empire, now the group’s former leader has thrown more gasoline on the proverbial fire with a stern rebuking of his ex-protégés.

According to several reports, incarcerated Dancehall superstar and former Empire founder, Vybz Kartel released a damning statement against his former group mates on Thursday, insinuating that prominent protégés, Popcaan and Tommy Lee are no longer committed to the ‘Gaza’ cause, labeling both artistes as ‘opportunists.’

The statement was reportedly issued through ex-Empire singer, Vanessa ‘Gaza Slim’ Saddler, who sent said statement to Anthony Miller of TVJ’s Entertainment Report.

The alleged statement reads, “I just want u to let the people know that all a dem runnin’ aroun’ sayin’ ‘Gaza, Gaza’ are not real. Before I came here we were ‘good.’ No animosity, but within a week of my arrest, they started giving other people managerial and booking positions. But where were these people when I was building their careers? When I was investing time and money to transform them from nobody to somebody? They are opportunists and fake. I’m not surprised because this is Dancehall and I have no problem with them making their money. But I jus’ don’t want them to be all over the place exploiting a movement that I built with blood sweat and tears when they and I know they aren’t real. I want them to stop. The only two loyal people are Slim and Sheba (the girls) and maybe it’s because they haven’t fully realized their potential.”

This news comes several weeks after back and forth exchanges between Popcaan and former Empire singjay, Gaza Slim following a statement made by the former deejay address his status within the ‘Gaza’ as well as relationship with Vybz Kartel.

Furthermore, reports suggest that Vybz Kartel wanted a sizeable portion of Tommy Lee’s booking and publishing rights in an effort to exert more control over the Some Bwoy singer’s career while also implying that Popcaan owes ‘Di Teacha’ money in relation to bookings fees.

Kartel has publicly lashed out against former protégés before, doing so after ex-members like Black Ryno and Lisa Hyper left the Portmore Empire. The once dominant super group has also lost members such as Jahvinci, Kym Hamilton, co-founder, Deva Bratt and former Empire producer, Ainsley ‘Notnice’ Morris.

In a swift response to Kartel’s statement, Lisa Hyper disputed claims made by the self-professed ‘Worl’ Boss,’ intimating during an interview with one876entertainment.com that ‘Di Teacha’ should never take full credit for the growing ‘Gaza’ movement.

“Who is him fi talk bout loyalty? Him not even loyal to him (expletive) self. Him right fi say ah only dem two de, Sheba and Slim ah the most loyal to him because dem ah de two foolest people pon the Gaza, dem not even know what a split sheet is, dem nuh know nothing bout the business. Kartel caan stop nobody from say Gaza, Gaza belong to everybody now, this is a movement, Gaza mean fight for what you believe in and Kartel caan tek Gaza from nobody, Popcaan and Tommy Lee caan siddown and wait pon him fi come out, and further, Gaza belong to everybody, it bigger than Adidja Palmer, it bigga than me, it bigga than everybody who help start it. Mi breathe Gaza, mi bleed Gaza, Gaza for life,” she said.

More details of this ongoing saga will emerge on TVJ’s Entertainment Report this Friday night featuring Kartel’s statement as well as reaction from the aforementioned Tommy Lee, who reportedly expresses his loyalty to the ‘Gaza’ in his interview with ER, despite his mentor’s comments.

New Vybz Kartel song reportedly banned from airwaves

Incarcerated Dancehall superstar, Vybz Kartel faces yet another ban from the airwaves after his latest effort has reportedly been banned from playing on radio.

On Wednesday, a new track from Kartel and PG13 singer, Gaza Slim debuted online, to the delight of their listeners. The single, entitled Reparation speaks about the ongoing scamming controversies that have taken place in Jamaica during recent months; most notably, the infamous Lotto scam which has triggered a number of arrests including that of Montego Bay’s deputy mayor, Michael Troupe.

However, lyrics from Reparation seemingly suggest that there’s nothing wrong with scamming; insisting that the practice bares no harm as long as any profit obtained doesn’t go towards sparking violence.

Vybz Kartel to stand trial in murder cases this fall

Embattled Dancehall superstar, Vybz Kartel will finally have his day in court as the prominent deejay prepares to stand trial in both of his ongoing murder cases

The internationally acclaimed entertainer, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, will appear in court on October 29 where he will stand trial in relation to the shooting death of St. Catherine based promoter  Barrington ‘Bossie’ Burton. Vybz Kartel faces three allegations in that case, including murder, conspiracy to murder and illegal possession for a firearm. The co-accused in that matter are Nigel Thompson and Lenburgh McDonald.

A week later, on November 5, Kartel will answer to accusations in another case as he prepares to stand trial in relation to the murder of St. Catherine-based dancer, Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams.

Co-accused of murder in the Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams case include Shawn Campbell aka Shawn Storm, Calvin ‘Moonie Haye, Shawn Williams, Kahira Jones ad Andre St. John aka Mad Suss.

Kartel’s long-time protégé, Vanessa ‘Gaza Slim’ Saddler and studio engineer, Andre ‘Pim Pim’ Henry, face obstruction of justice-related charges in the Williams case as they’re each accused of conspiring to pervert the course of justice.

Vybz Kartel has been in police custody since last September, when he was arrested in a New Kingston hotel and charged with ganja possession. That charge has since been thrown out.

The self-professed ‘Worl’ Boss’ copped bail in the Barrington ‘Bossie’ Burton murder case this past March but could not capitalize on it due to the fact that he’s been remanded in the Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams matter.

Kartel’s lawyer, Valerie Neita-Robertson was expected to file a bail application in the Williams murder case but failed to do so after expressing dissatisfaction at the case being shifted to another judge.

However, Neita-Robertson hinted that she would apply for bail on behalf of her client sometime between the two trial dates.

Gaza Slim calls out Popcaan, insists he lied in statement

It’s a literal case of he said-she said as the fallout from the recent disbanding of the Portmore Empire continues with one former member Gaza Slim calling out another in Popcaan following a statement released to the public on Monday.

The Only Man She Want deejay issued a detailed press release addressing several pressing issues, from his relationship with former mentor, Vybz Kartel to the reasoning behind him not being a member of PG13, a new label spearheaded by Kartel which features Tommy Lee and the aforementioned Gaza Slim. In said release, Popcaan insisted that he was not able to visit the self-professed ‘Worl’ Boss’ given that he was advised against making visitations to the jail where Kartel had been held at and that ‘Di Teacha’ himself suggested through letter that he should stay away from the police. Additionally, Popcaan insisted that he remains grateful to Vybz Kartel for providing him with several musical opportunities and that he’s forever loyal to the ‘Gaza.’

A day after Popcaan broke his silence, Gaza Slim, whose also known as Vanessa Bling issued a statement of her own, steadfastly refuting the When We Party deejay’s account of these events while revealing the apparent discord that existed between Popcaan and Vybz Kartel after the latter’s arrest last September.

Portmore Empire

Vybz Kartel disbands the Portmore Empire

After five years in existence and stamping their place as one of Dancehall’s most dominant crews, the Portmore Empire has officially disbanded.

The shock announcement was made early Wednesday morning by Portmore Empire leader, Vybz Kartel, who issued a statement from jail confirming the group’s split through his Adidjaheim Records label.

According to Kartel, this hails as the best time for Empire artistes to try and achieve success on their own and that it would be unfair to keep them confined to his group given his ongoing legal situations.

“Dancehall fans worldwide it with great regret that I, Adidja Palmer, have decided to disband the Portmore Empire. These artistes have been under the Adidjahiem leadership for years, where they have honed their craft and made their mark, and as such, are well on their way to becoming major forces in Dancehall. They have reached a level where they are more capable to take on their careers by themselves, and it would be unfair to them, based on the limited resources of Adidjahiem Records, and current legal woes of the Adidjahiem C.E.O. and team members,” the statement reads.

“I wish them the best and I am confident that they will live up to my expectations. In the future, Adidjahiem will continue to bring out new acts and groom them for stardom,”

Already a pair of the Empire’s members, Vanessa ‘Gaza Slim’ Saddler and Leroy ‘Tommy Lee’ Russell have committed to a new project as they’ve joined a newly formed label entitled, PG13.

“Right now, a PG13 di ting deh,” Gaza Slim said.

Tommy Lee added, “Look out for PG13…It soon work in.”

The Portmore Empire became one of Dancehall’s most popular stables since its formation in 2007 by veteran deejay, Deva Bratt and Kartel. Though Deva Bratt left the group after a falling out with the self-proclaimed Worl’ Boss, the group soon flourished as they introduced several acts to the mainstream such as Jahvinci, Black Ryno, Lisa Hyper and most notably, Popcaan.

However, between the end of 2009 and last summer, the Empire soon shrunk as Lisa Hype, Black Ryno, Jahvinci and fellow members, Doza Medicine as well as Kym Hamilton (formerly Gaza Kym) all left the group, citing ill-treatment.

But with the emergence of Popcaan as a megastar with hits such as Ravin and Only Man She Want, the group elevated to seemingly higher heights before Kartel was arrested last September and later slapped with murder, drug and obstruction of justice related charges.
