Beres Hammond and Sizzla Receive 2014 Grammy Nominations for Best Reggae Album

Beres Hammond and Sizzla Receive 2014 Grammy Nominations for Best Reggae Album

The 2014 Grammy nominees were revealed on Friday, December 6th, 2013. Two titles released on VP Records, Beres Hammond’s One Love, One Life and Sizzla’s The Messiah, are in the running for the Best Reggae Album category.

Known to many as the “Otis Redding of Reggae,” Beres Hammond has been producing and pouring out his smoky-sweet vocals over every kind of riddim track for almost 40 years. VP Records released his latest Grammy-nominated, double-disc studio album One Love, One Life in November 2012. The release peaked at #1 on Billboard’s Top 10 Reggae Album chart and was hailed by Rolling Stone as “one of the best albums of a four-decade-long career.” The first disc One Love includes his signature classic lover’s rock sound, while the second disc One Life contains more of his socially-conscious, spiritually empowering tunes. Beres Hammond produced 19 of the 20 songs with co-producers Donovan Germain on “No Candle Light,” Collin “Bulby” York on “In My Arms” and Michael Fletcher on “More Time.”  This is Beres Hammond’s second Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album. The icon was considered in 2002 for his 2001 studio album Music Is Life.

This is Sizzla’s first Grammy nomination. Mostly written and executive produced by himself, Sizzla’s full scope of talents are displayed on his 70th effort The Messiah, which was released this May. As one of reggae’s most prolific artists, he showcases his musical depth, passion and precision on this 15-track collection inspiring positive change worldwide.  His social commentary on songs like “Chant Dem Down,” “No Wicked Man” and “Psalms 121″ reveal his daring bravado and righteous lyrics, while the melodic anthem “Good Love” unveils his softer side. The Messiah peaked at #1 on the South Florida Reggae Chart and New York Reggae Chart. With his fresh perspective, it is evident that Sizzla remains the reigning king of roots.

“We are very proud of Sizzla and Beres for this outstanding achievement. Each artist, who are both legends in their own right, created inspiring and groundbreaking material on their latest collections. They not only released some of their best work to date, but raised the bar for the genre,” he adds.

Da’Ville savors selection for Grammy Award shortlist

Internationally-renowned Jamaican entertainer, Da’Ville is basking in musical glory once more as he cherishes being selected on a provisional list for music’s highest honor.

On November 11, the Reggae/Pop superstar was named as one of 50 artistes on a shortlist for the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. Da’Ville’s third studio album, Krazy Love was deemed worth of mention for the award, culminating what has been a successful return to the spotlight for the smooth-sounding entertainer.

According to the Fashozy Records recording artistehe is humbled by the Recording Academy’s consideration of his album as it shows that his years of hard work have finally paid off in a big way.

It’s definitely a great feeling, it shows that my music and work is being recognized and for that I give thanks” he said.

After taking a break from the industry to recharge his batteries, Da’Ville released Krazy Love in July, to rave reviews locally and internationally. Passionate efforts like Woman, Took a Break andThis Love reminded fans and industry players of the talent and diversity Da’Ville possesses, helping Krazy Love to chart in Jamaica, the United States, Europe and Africa.

For Da’Ville, this Grammy nomination just adds fuel to the fire.

“Sometimes this business make you wanna give up but I’ve always been a motivated individual so this news certainly adds to motivating me a little more,” he said.

Da’Ville’s Krazy Love will square off against efforts fromBusy Signal (Reggae Music Again), Konshens (Mental Maintenance), Vybz Kartel (Pon Di Gaza Mi Sey), Sean Paul (Tomahawk Technique), Mr. Vegas (Sweet Jamaica) and fellow stalwarts who will contest for the final five or six nominations list, to be announced on December 5 in Los Angeles.

Though competition is stiff, Da’Ville believes he has a great chance at taking home the Best Reggae Album Grammy. What would it mean for Da’Ville to take home music’s greatest accolade?

“Honestly, I mean…after putting my life work, time, effort and commitment into my music, to me that would be like a prize fighter winning the coveted world title,” he said “.It would say a lot about the work and talent that I have. People would have to take notice at some point don’t it? I wouldn’t trade that for anything else. It’s a life time experience.”

Though his aspirations are great, Da’Ville won’t allow success to get to his head. The prominent entertainer continues to tour and promote Krazy Love. He’s also expanded his strong catalogue of hits, with joint efforts alongside Bunji Garlin (Touch You) and Charly Black (Never Let You Go) as well as the Inna Mi House Music-produced track, Come Mek We Touch.

“There’s so much going on and so much more to do,” Da’Ville said. “I can never stop making music so always stay tuned to new and exciting things from me.”

Buju

Evidentiary hearing set in Buju’s drug case

There’s better news today for embattled Jamaican entertainer, Buju Banton as an evidentiary hearing has been set to explore allegations that a juror violated protocol in his drug trial last year.

According to reports, the hearing has been secured by Buju’s lawyer, Chokwe Lumumba in conjunction with his defense support committee. The evidentiary hearing will take place on December 20 at the Sam M. Gibbons Federal Courthouse in Tampa, FL on December 20 at 9:30 a.m.

The court has reportedly summoned four jurors to this hearing, one of whom admitted to reporters last month that she researched aspects of Buju Banton’s drug case prior to deliberation. Should that juror, Terri Wright, be proven to have done so, a mistrial could be ruled in Buju’s drug case as researching facts for federal trials constitutes a violation of court orders.

In her defense, Wright claims that despite doing such research, it had no influence on her thinking through the trial in which Buju was convicted of three drug charges and subsequently sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Buju Banton still faces an additional five years in prison on a gun charge that was reinstated during the summer after an appeal to overturn his conviction fell through. However, a re-sentencing hearing on said gun charge was postponed after Lumumba’s application for an investigation into the alleged juror misconduct was approved.

Bob Marley earns new Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award

Reggae music’s greatest icon has posthumously captured another accolade after receiving a new Lifetime Achievement Award Grammy recently.

Legendary Reggae singer, Bob Marley earned a replacement version of the same lifetime achievement award that he initially copped in 2001. According to reports, Recording Academy personnel recently visited Jamaica and later noticed that the original version of Marley’s lifetime Grammy had been damaged; thus, leading to the decision of creating a new rendition of said award.

Bob Marley’s eldest son and fellow Reggae superstar, Ziggy Marley reportedly accepted the award alongside his sister, Karen Marley following a Recording Academy screening of the popular documentary, Marley at the Los Angeles Film School on Sunset Boluevard in Hollywood.

According to Neil Portnow, the Grammy Recording Academy president and CEO dubbed Bob Marley’s music as ‘song of faith, devotion and revolution.’

Bob Marley has earned several posthumous awards since dying of cancer at the tender age of 36 in 1981; being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and earning a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2001, just to name a few.

Buju Banton

Buju Banton’s appeal dismissed

Any lingering hopes that embattled Dancehall/Reggae superstar, Buju Banton would cop an early release from federal prison have been dashed as it’s been announced that an appeal to overturn the Grammy-winning singer’s conviction has been dismissed.

According to reports, the United States Court of Appeal for the 11th Circuit made the ruling during a hearing that took place on Thursday. In its ruling, the appeals court insisted that it agreed with the jury’s decision to convict Buju Banton of federal drug charges in February 2011 as he was found guilty of three charges including conspiracy to distribute cocaine and aiding and abetting a person’s use of a telephone to facilitate a drug crime.

The Circuit Court also agreed with the jury that Buju was guilty of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug crime. That charge had been dismissed by the trial judge after the verdict was read.

Buju’s legal team issued its appeal in the artiste’s case last December, citing entrapment as well as the possible violation of a constitutional right, dubbed the Speedy Trial Act.

Buju Banton was later sentenced to 10 years in federal prison last June. He initially spent his sentence at the Limestone County Detention Centre in Texas before being sent to a federal facility in Miami after several complaints of ill-treatment and concerns over Buju’s safety were raised.

His current release date is slated for February 1, 2019.
