Toronto to host Jamaica 50th independence anniversary events

With Jamaica closing in on their 50th anniversary of Independence, Canada’s largest city prepares to join in on the celebrations.

Known for its vast Jamaican populous, Toronto will play host to Jamaican Rhythms, one of several events in Canada that will celebrate the island’s golden anniversary of independence. Jamaican Rhythms will be held on June 28 at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts in downtown Toronto.

The event will feature Dancehall and Reggae veterans such as Yellow Man, Beenie Man, John Holt and Marcia Griffiths as well as British Reggae singer, Maxi Priest. Additionally, Jamaican Rhythms will feature local acts such as 2012 JUNO Award winner, Exco Levi, Jay Douglas and JUNO nominee, Steele.

Shaggy considers all-Jamaican lineup for next charity concert

Following what many regard as the best Shaggy and Friends to date, the charity event’s creator believes that he should return to his roots for the next show.

The event’s organizer and international Reggae artiste,Orville Burrell, more popularly known as Shaggy, claims that he might have an all Jamaican lineup at the next Shaggy and Friends event, which could take place later this year. The Grammy-winning entertainer made this announcement earlier this week at an event announcing that the most recent edition of Shaggy and Friends netted JA$32 million; proceeds which fund the Bustamante Hospital for Children.

According to Shaggy, this movewill pay homage to Jamaica celebrating its 50th year of Independence this year.

“This is not engraved in stone. We all have to sit and think about it, but personally I see this as being good for the artistes, the country and our culture. A fitting way to celebrate Jamaica 50,” he said.

Celine Dion to headline 2012 Jamaica Jazz and Blues festival

Grammy-winning and internationally acclaimed singer, Celine Dion will headline the 2012 Jazz and Blues festival in Trelawny.

The French-Canadian artiste was announced as the show’s main act during the official launch of the Jazz and Blues festival at the Iberostar Suites hotel in Montego Bay on Wednesday. The festival, set to take place at the Trelawny multi-purpose stadium from January 26-28 next year, will showcase Dion, amongst other international acts, for their 17th edition.

Chairman of the Jazz and Blues festival, Walter Elmore expressed his joy regarding being able to land a singer of Dion’s stature for the event.
