Jamaica music ambassador Richie Stephens and multi-platinum German sinjay Gentleman, who both enjoyed tremendous success this year with hit singles “Live Your Life” and “Warrior” have pooled their creative talents on a new album aptly titled “Live Your Life” which will be released next month on the VP Records imprint.

Gentleman, who is currently in Jamaica putting the finishing touches on the new disc was very upbeat about the project.

“It is nice to see how things have turned out with the album. We have some excellent songs that fans are gonna really enjoy” he said.

“The project came out of a natural vibe between the two of us without being planned. We put a lot of work into the songs and I am very happy with the finished product.”

The 12 track disc will feature 6 duets including ‘Jah Is Not Sleeping,’ ‘I Found Heaven’ and previous released singles ‘Life your Life’ and ‘Warrior.’ Also to be included on the disc are six solo tracks (three from each artiste) including ”Drift Away’ and ‘Dutty Soul’ from Stephens and Gentleman respectively.

‘This is probably one of the most sophisticated album I have ever recorded” Stephens bragged.

“We have a little something for everyone including an old school track that fans are really gonna love. The rest of the album is just as impressive” he said.

Given the good working vibes he has with Gentleman, the decision to do an album of duets was a no brainer Stephens said.

“Gentleman is the consummate professional and an extremely hard worker. We have a musical connection that brings out the best in us” he gushed.

Gentleman and Stephens’ whirlwind success started in 2011 with their first recording “Live Your Life” which topped reggae charts in New York, Florida, Atlanta and was voted the ‘Best International Song’ at the 2011 Stone Love Awards in Kingston. The video clip for the song also won the award for ‘Best Music Video’ at the 2012 International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA) in Chicago this year. The pair have also enjoyed several electrifying performances in Germany, Holland, Portugal, Spain, Italy and Croatia where Stephens was the special guest of Gentleman. Their most memorable performance was before a crowd of 750,000 in Poland, at the biggest festival in the world — Woodstock. This was followed by another stellar performance at the 2012 Jazz & Blues Festival in Trewlany, Jamaica.

Stephens and Gentleman will give fans a taste of songs from their new album along with other favorites when the perform at the American Friends of Jamaica Ball in Manhattan on Thursday, October 25 and the official album launch slated for Friday, October 26, 2012 at Mingles Cafe in the Bronx. Dub Master Chris, radio host of Irie Jam Radio in NY will be serve as MC for the launch.

LargeUp Interview: Super Beagle on “Dust A Sound Bwoy” + Kanye’s “Mercy”

LargeUp Interview: Super Beagle on “Dust A Sound Bwoy” + Kanye’s “Mercy”

As a teenager growing up in Kingston, my afterschool job was at Techniques Records, where I auditioned artists, sold records, and spent many evenings recording dubplates for overseas customers with sound systems. Artists like Super Beagle, Baby Wayne, Capleton and Buju Banton hung around the store while waiting their turn to record for Winston Riley, the proprietor and producer of the legendary label. Many of us became friends, going to dub studios, writing and practicing songs for the day they would step behind the microphone.

Riley, who had produced “Double Barrel,” the second Jamaican song to go to top the British charts, and other hits including Johnny Osbourne’s “Come Back Darling,” General Echo’s “Arleen,” Tenor Saw’s “Ring The Alarm,” and Super Cat’s “Boops” was not easily impressed—even by artists that already had songs on the road that were selling. When he finally heard and approved Super Beagle’s “Dust a Soundboy” lyrics, he once again opened his vault and lifted out his 24-track Ampex tape with the Stalag rhythm that had already given him numerous hits. We all knew that this was another guaranteed hit. But the icing on the cake for “Dust a Soundboy” was Fuzzy Jones’s intro, with his haunting vocal, like that of an ancient seer, predicting death and destruction to anyone who did not heed his warning: “WELL! It is a weeping and a moaning and a gnashing of teeth in the dancehall and who don’t have teeth gweh rub pan dem gum.”

Move forward to 2012 and one of the hottest songs on the radio is Kanye West’s “Mercy” featuring the same Fuzzy Jones intro from Super Beagle’s “Dust a Sound Boy.” I had to call up Beagle to get his feedback on Kanye sampling his biggest song. The result is more of a stroll down memory lane than an interview, as we compared memories of our days at Techniques Records on Chancery Lane, Arrows Dub Studio, and where it all began for Buju Banton. Photos were shot in and around Super Beagle’s neighborhood in Portmore.

Jamaica’s world 100-metre record holder Usain Bolt will run the main sprint at the Golden Spike event in the eastern Czech city of Ostrava on May 25, organisers said on Thursday.

Jamaica’s Usain Bolt pcitured after winning the men’s 100m during the Diamond League athletics meeting in Brussels in September 2011. The world 100-metre record holderwill run the main sprint at the Golden Spike event in the eastern Czech city of Ostrava on May 25, organisers said on Thursday.

They said the Golden Spike was likely to be this year’s first start in Europe for Bolt, who is set to defend his Olympic 100-metre and 200-metre gold in August in London.

The news came in the wake of Bolt’s withdrawal from the Camperdown Classic event in Kingston, Jamaica last Saturday that sparked concerns about his health which were later denied by Bolt’s coach.

The Golden Spike organisers earlier confirmed Cuba’s world record holder Dayron Robles for the 110-metre hurdles race at Ostrava.

Jamaica’s Veronica Campbell-Brown is expected on the 200-metre track, and US runner LaShawn Merritt will run 400 metres at the event, the organisers said.

Bob Marley & Peter Tosh To Be Honored By Jamaica Music Museum

Bob Marley and Peter Tosh will be honored in their native island of Jamaica when the nation’s music museum opens next year in Kingston.

A number of artifacts will be on display that are associated with the two reggae musicians, including the album Marley produced before he became famous – Martha Velez’s Escape from Babylon – and a cassette tape that features Tosh performing a blues track with Rolling Stones stars Keith Richards and Mick Jagger in 1977
The museum archive is filled mainly with the donations of local music enthusiasts. In January of 2008, however, a large amount of historic film footage and thousands of original records were stolen from the preservationist archive.

A date has not yet been set for the opening of the Jamaica Music Museum in Kingston. It will be operated by the government through the Institute of Jamaica, which oversees cultural affairs.
