I-Octane set to close Reggae Sumfest for second consecutive year

I-Octane Reggae SumfestAfter a war of words and nominations being put in as to who should close Dancehall Night at Reggae Sumfest, organizers of the show have taken the safe bet, opting for I-Octane to close the show for the second straight year.

Summerfest Productions CEO, Johnny Gourzong announced that I-Octane would finish Dancehall Night set to take place on July 17, saying at Reggae Sumfest’s official launch in Kingston this past weekend, “I-Octane is closing Dancehall Night! No ifs, buts or maybes!”

I-Octane has since accepted the news, saying he will bring his best to the show in an effort to better his closing set from last year.

This news comes after weeks of back and forth between himself and fellow singjay, Mr. Vegas after Octane challenged Vegas to close the show following disparaging comments Vegas made about him closing the show as well as his campaign to get said closing spot. Vegas responded by saying Octane should close to go given he thinks of himself as the new king of Dancehall, saying he would consider closing the show himself if asked.

Veteran deejay, Kiprich, who has previously closed STING, also threw his hat in the ring to close the show, as long as the pay was good enough.

Reggae Sumfest will take place from July 13-19 in Montego Bay.

Bounty Killer, Tommy Lee war of words heats up

Just last week, it seemed like any possibility of a lyrical tussle between Alliance leader, Bounty Killer and ‘Gaza’ artiste Tommy Lee would subside given the apparent expressions of respect they expressed towards each other. However, after the latter entertainer’s latest taunts, Dancehall could be witnessing the next big clash within its circles.

On Saturday, Tommy Lee launched a scathing attack on Bounty Killer on a new track entitled Goat Head for which a video emerged on Monday, featuring an image of a goat with sunglasses used to mirror the legendary artiste’s face. Additionally, Lee calls out the ‘War Lord’ on a number of issues, including his claims that the ‘Sparta’ concept has ties to homosexuality while highlighting some of Bounty Killer’s legal troubles.

Upon hearing Goat Head, Alliance Next Generation artiste, Iyara shot back at the prominent ‘Gaza’ deejay with Murda Dem which also dissed UIM Records producer, Anju Blaxx.

Bounty Killer himself replied on Twitter with a clever comeback to Tommy Lee’s diss track, stating “GrungGaadZilla a.k.a Jesus Price is officially the dancehall G.O.A.T the Greatest of All Time,” while also referring to the Psycho deejay as ‘Tommy Flee’ and ‘Nyammy Lee.’

Additionally, Bounty Killer, who’s received a lot of support and flack for his stance, issued a stern warning to Jamaica about the direction that its music and society are going, comparing them to Haiti, who’s endured its share of natural disasters the last two years.

“Jamaica tuned like Haiti. Worshiping voodoo and demons, God forbid but unuh see what happened to Haiti in recent times that unuh want reach Jamaicans too?” he asked.

Bounty Killer insisted last week that he would not clash Tommy Lee at STING 2012 while releasing a new track featuring Kiprich and Alliance Next Generation protégé, Calado on the thought-provoking, War Fi God. However, after Tommy Lee’s lyrical attack, many wonder whether or not the ‘Gaza’ vs. Alliance battle will re-emerge as a result of these recent developments.

Ninja Man teams with Kiprich for comeback single

Iconic Dancehall superstar, Ninja Man has returned to the music spotlight just days after posting bail in his ongoing murder case.

Ninja Man, as well as his 20 year old son and co-accused, Janiel Ballentine were recently granted JA$2 million bail in the case and are due to return to court on July 16.

In the meantime, Ninja Man has recaptured his musical roots for the first time in nearly a decade, teaming up with Dancehall star, Kiprich to record a new collaborative effort, The Don Gorgon Is Back. Done in honor of Ninja Man’s return to the Dancehall scene, The Don Gorgon Is Back was conceptualized and produced by Kiprich, who contacted the veteran artiste’s team after insisting that he deserved a commemorative return song.

Matterhorn open to Twins rematch, wants clashes with bigger artistes

Prominent selector turned deejay, Tony Matterhorn continues to receive praise for his dominant effort at STING 2011 against comedic duo, Twin of Twins. However, the entertainer maintains that his victory on Boxing Day was no fluke.

Matterhorn and the Twins attempted to settle their long-standing feud via a lyrical clash at the 28th edition of STING in the early hours of Tuesday morning at Jamworld in Portmore, St. Catherine. After a sluggish start by both participants, Matterhorn stamped his authority on their lyrical battle with an array of freestyles as well as a snippet of his upcoming Dancehall Duppy 4 single.

Following the clash, Twin of Twins member, Patrick Gaynor aka Curly Lox intimated that he fell ill due to a nasal congestion received as a result of excess touring during the holiday season. Gaynor explained that after having a drink of Magnum following the consumption of medication, he felt funny, thus, leading to a sub-standard performance by the comedic duo. As a result, the Twins denied that a clash took place; issuing a rematch invitation to Matterhorn to settle their differences once and for all.

STING to return to clash roots this year, says promoter

Head of Supreme Promotions, Isaiah Laing has vowed that the prominent Dancehall super show, STING will return to its clashing roots this time round.

In almost 30 years of existence, STING has gained mass popularity & notoriety; providing the stage for Dancehall artistes to settle any and all lyrical confrontations. However, last years’ edition of STING was considered a general disappointment in terms of turnout & theme, given that there were no clashes at the event last year. Furthermore, the absence of internationally acclaimed superstars, Vybz Kartel & Mavado caused the event to lose its essence in the minds of many fans & Dancehall observers.

However, Laing promises that STING 2011 will see a return to the nature of lyrical warfare that’s usually associated with the event, hence this year’s theme, “Rumours of War.”

Kiprich wants lyrical clash

Veteran Dancehall artiste, Marlon Plunkett, better known as Kiprich is in a war mode, lyrically that is as he is ready to enter a lyrical confrontation. However, the decision of which artiste he’ll face will be left to his fans.

Kiprich has long sought after a clash with Vybz Kartel in the minds of several Dancehall observers, dating back to him counteraction to “Di Teacha’s “Cake Soap” single entitled “Cyaah Get Brown” last fall.

Entering the “Dark season” in Dancehall, Kiprich says he will enter a lyrical clash if his fans call for it. “Yuh see, if the people dem a ask fi dat, a dat mi a deal wid.
