Grammy nominated star M.I.A. has revealed that she is planning to release her third album this Spring.
M.I.A. was born in Sri Lanka, but fled the country after enduring repression from the government. Her politician father was sympathetic to the Tamil people, many of whom support a breakaway state.
Becoming a visual artist in Britain the star then turned towards music as a means of expression. Blending an array of samples the dancefloor savvy singer seemed to find making music effortless.
Breaking through to the mainstream courtesy of her Clash sampling single ‘Paper Planes’ the star has been silent for two and a half years. Taking time off to have a baby, the Grammy nominated star has spent her time haranguing the Sri Lankan government and bringing attention to the plight of the Tamil people.
Now it seems that M.I.A.’s hunt for new material is over.
Speaking to the NME the singer revealed that the follow up to ‘Kala’ will be “really odd”. M.I.A. declared: “I wanted it to be like, no gimmicks”.
“It’s my third album and I have to kind of confront whether I am a musician or not… I wanted to make something that you could play that isn’t like trendy just for three months, or the length of a DJ’s attention span.”
To record the new material M.I.A. has hooked up with long term collaborators Diplo and Switch, who were both involved in the construction of ‘Kala’. With those producers recently completing work on the Major Lazer project, M.I.A. could be set to take on a new dancehall direction.
It appears the original video for this song from our Summer Music cover stars just wasn’t weird enough, what with all the animated zombies and whatnot. So for round two, Eric Wareheim, who also directed “Pon De Floor”, puts a bunch of voluptuous ladies’ faces through the WTF Machine. Via:Thefader
