Americans dominating Billboard Reggae charts

rebelutionDespite Jamaica’s apparent renaissance in Reggae music this year, the island’s presence on the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart in The U.S. continues to dwindle Americans have recently dominated the top 10.

In the latest edition of the American magazine’s chart, five of the top ten albums are by American Reggae artists, led by California-based Reggae band, Rebelution for their Peace of Mind album. Pennsylvania-born Reggae act, Matisyahu is runner-up for his album, Spark Seeker while Virginia-based band, Soldiers of Jah Army (S.O.J.A) is third with Strength To Survive.

Two other American acts, Josh Heinrichs (Rooftop Session EP) from Missouri and Fiji (Born and Raised II – The Rebirth) from Hawaii round out the top 10 at nine and 10 respectively. This is the third straight week at least half of Billboard’s Reggae charts were albums from American Reggae acts.

Only two solo Reggae albums from Jamaican acts are on the list: Jimmy Cliff’ Grammy-award winning project, Rebirth at number six and Beres Hammond‘s new album, One Love, One Life at number eight. Marley: The Original Soundtrack and Reggae Gold 2012 are the only other Jamaican Reggae albums on the list at fourth and seventh respectively.

Bermudan act, Mishka is the only act outside Jamaica and the U.S. on Billboard’s Reggae albums chart with Ocean IS My Potion at number six.

Reggae star Matisyahu, no longer Hasidic, shaves his trademark beard

Yesterday, the “One Day” singer Matisyahu posted a photo on Twitter which showed him with a clean-shaven face. The photo was accompanied by a message: “At the break of day I look for you at sunrise When the tide comes in I lose my disguise.” The lines come from the song “Thunder,” which can be found on Matisyahu’s 2009 album, Light.

In a subsequent blog entry on his official website, the man born Matthew Miller — he changed his name when he joined a Hasidic community and converted at age 19 — elaborated on his decision to, at least temporarily, face the world without facial foliage.

“This morning I posted a photo of myself on Twitter,” he wrote. “No more Chassidic reggae superstar. Sorry folks, all you get is me…no alias.  When I started becoming religious 10 years ago it was a very natural and organic process.  It was my choice.  My journey to discover my roots and explore Jewish spirituality—not through books but through real life.  At a certain point I felt the need to submit to a higher level of religiosity…to move away from my intuition and to accept an ultimate truth.  I felt that in order to become a good person I needed rules—lots of them—or else I would somehow fall apart.  I am reclaiming myself.  Trusting my goodness and my divine mission. Get ready for an amazing year filled with music of rebirth.  And for those concerned with my naked face, don’t worry…you haven’t seen the last of my facial hair.”

In another Twitter message, Matisyahu seemingly sought to reassure fans that his beardless state did not mean he had abandoned the Jewish faith: “For all those who are confused:today I went to the Mikva and Shul just like yesterday.”

August 2009 Reggae Albums Releases

Contagious. | Release date: Aug. 4, 2009. | Label: VP Records.

Awarded Best Male Vocalist and Best Song at the 2008 International Reggae and World Music Awards, Tarrus Riley is the most promising of the second generation of Jamaica roots reggae singers. With an August 4, 2009 release of his much-anticipated third set CONTAGIOUS on Cannon Productions, distributed by VP Records, Tarrus Riley reaffirms that he is one of finest singer/songwriters of his generation, irrespective of musical genre. The son of Jimmy Riley – who has had a long career as a solo artist as well as being a former member of the Uniques and the Techniques. Riley’s songs retain ties to the Jamaican roots tradition while still managing to sound distinctly contemporary. In addition, his strong stage presence gives him crossover appeal and marks him as a coming force on the international reggae scene

Imperial Blaze.| Release date: Aug. 18, 2009. | Label: Atlantic Records.

Sean Paul is known primarily for his airtime devouring, party-engineered, reggae pop tracks, but for his next album the singer said that he wants to take a more responsible path, and focus on youth violence in Jamaica. Some of the tracks from the new socially conscious Sean Paul album include titles like, “She Want Me,” “Birthday Suit,” “Hold My Hand,” and “Don’t Tease Me.” Left off was Sean Paul’s climate change warning, “Gimme Dat Booty.”

Light. | Release date: Aug. 25, 2009. | Label: Sony.

Matisyahu had been working on his third album for nearly two years, making it the longest time he has ever spent making a record. The follow-up to Youth had been delayed several times before its release. First scheduled for early 2008, Light was pushed back numerous times because Matisyahu continued to tour off and on since the release of Youth. The new album’s release date was set for April 21, 2009, but on March 3, the release date was pushed back to May 12, 2009. Then, once again, he pushed the release back, this time to Summer 2009, ostensibly because Matisyahu decided to record more new songs. That date had already passed, and in a message from Matisyahu on Twitter the album is due to release on August 25th.

Our World. | Release date: Aug. 25, 2009. | Label: VP Records.

TOK’s third album, Our World, is scheduled to be released in August, according to the group’s website. It will be distributed by VP Records. Afternoon Porn Star is the set’s lead single. It is produced by Tony Kelly, one of the top dancehall producers of the last 15 years. The quartet (Craigy-T, Flexx, Alex and Bay-C) has made a name as a hit-single group. They are best known for the songs When Doves Cry.

Their debut album, My Crew My Dawgs, was released in 2001 while the second, Unknown Language, came four years later. The latter contained the hit songs Gal Yuh Lead and Footprints.
