Mr. Vegas and Latty J show ‘Who Rule’ in new single

Mr. Vegas Latty JHigh-riding dancehall star, Mr. Vegas has released a collab with Latty J, one of the hottest new recruits on the Dancehall scene, dubbed, Who Rule.

The track and video, which was released this week is another from Mr. Vegas’ MV Music outfit featuring one of the artistes in his stable.

The August Town native has been bubbling up with several hot singles over the past few months. She recently bussed big shots on the Mint Tea Riddim with Shape & Figure and Irie Vibes on the Protector Riddim. She was also presented and accounted for on Jah Snow Cone’s Nuh Fraid Riddim with a track titled, Put Up Unuh Han and before, claimed God A God on another collab with Mr. Vegas. On all tracks Latty J demonstrated dexterity and skill in handling the riddim; peppering it with catchy lyrics in her own gritty feminine style.

Happy with the latest release, Latty J says she is rising to the next level, Who Rule is kind of a coming of age for me. I have been in the business learning and showing the people my talent and this track is just a culmination of part of my musical journey.”

Mr. Vegas, for his part, is happy he and Latty J could have the chemistry for such a conceptually difficult song to pull off,

“When Pappa San and Lady G did the same concept it was a smash because they had the chemistry and now in 2014 Latty J and myself have come up with a similar feel but with different metaphors and similes. We work well together and she is one of the new artistes who will inherit the future of Dancehall.”

Who Rule features Mr. Vegas and Latty J in competition as to who wears the pants in the house. It is a humorous take on male to female relationships and brings added fun to the dancehall landscape, which is sometimes void of humour and the harmless banter of forgone years.

I-Octane set to close Reggae Sumfest for second consecutive year

I-Octane Reggae SumfestAfter a war of words and nominations being put in as to who should close Dancehall Night at Reggae Sumfest, organizers of the show have taken the safe bet, opting for I-Octane to close the show for the second straight year.

Summerfest Productions CEO, Johnny Gourzong announced that I-Octane would finish Dancehall Night set to take place on July 17, saying at Reggae Sumfest’s official launch in Kingston this past weekend, “I-Octane is closing Dancehall Night! No ifs, buts or maybes!”

I-Octane has since accepted the news, saying he will bring his best to the show in an effort to better his closing set from last year.

This news comes after weeks of back and forth between himself and fellow singjay, Mr. Vegas after Octane challenged Vegas to close the show following disparaging comments Vegas made about him closing the show as well as his campaign to get said closing spot. Vegas responded by saying Octane should close to go given he thinks of himself as the new king of Dancehall, saying he would consider closing the show himself if asked.

Veteran deejay, Kiprich, who has previously closed STING, also threw his hat in the ring to close the show, as long as the pay was good enough.

Reggae Sumfest will take place from July 13-19 in Montego Bay.

I-Octane and Mr. Vegas feud over who should close Sumfest

I-Octane 2014I-OcAfter headlining Dancehall Night at the 2013 edition of Reggae Sumfest, Dancehall/Reggae star, I-Octane has declined an offer by show organizers to close the show again this year, instead calling on Mr. Vegas, who questioned Sumfest’s selection of Octane as the closing act last year, to finish the show.

After it was announced I-Octane was closing Dancehall Night at last year’s show, Mr. Vegas became increasingly vocal about the Sumfest lineup, openly questioning the show’s promotion of the singjay as the closing act, while criticizing his open campaigning for the closing spot. He also questioned why young Reggae sensation,Chronixx performed on International Night 2, suggesting he would have been a better fit for Dancehall Night because hardcore Dancehall fans were a big part of his following.

I-Octane, currently on an extended U.S. tour, initially acceptedSummerfest Productions head, Johnny Gourzong’s invitation for the entertainer to close Dancehall Night for the second year running. However, he changed his mind after being told Mr. Vegas was also on the bill and has challenged him to close the show instead.

Mr. Vegas responded to I-Octane’s comments following a show in Colombia, saying Octane should again finish Dancehall Night given he considers himself the ‘King of Dancehall. However, Vegas warned Octane that he should think more long term with his career goals.

Dancehall Night at Reggae Sumfest 2014 will take place on July 17. Reggae Sumfest 2014 is scheduled for July 13-19 at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Complex in Montego Bay.

mr.vegas_Add another way for Dancehall/Reggae superstar, Mr. Vegas to capitalize on the recent cheating saga involving his baby’s mother and alleged lover as the prominent singjay will auction furniture from the infamous, ‘house of infidelity.’

Vegas has found a myriad of ways to deal with the image of discovering his baby’s mother, Shellian McBayne sleeping with another man in his Florida home this past October. Vegas, who went on a social media rant to expose his ex-girlfriend’s actions, has released various visuals (video, photos) of the incident and even made a music video, Bare Tingz, in which he mocked the controversial occurrence.

2012 Year in Review: The Top 10 stories in Jamaican Pop Culture

busy-signal-arrest-2012-09-22-300x300This being Jamaica’s 50th year of independence, many of us expected lots of fireworks, chaos and the celebratory hoopla that comes along with such a significant anniversary. In the entertainment world, we got that and then some throughout 2012.

From triumph to tragedy, and the stuff in between, here are the 10 stories that gripped the Jamaican entertainment scene in 2012.

10. Deanna Robins reaches Miss World final: I won’t lie. In June, while watching the Miss Jamaica World pageant, I was home shouting my objection to the final results, thinking that Trishauna Clarke and not the eventual winner, Deanna Robins should have won the crown, mainly because of my bias towards Clarke given she’s a an old prep school classmate of mine. At the time I doubted Robins could deliver the goods on the Miss World stage. After her performance in China, it re-affirmed why I shouldn’t be allowed near a pageant judging panel.

Robins was the epitome of brains and beauty as not only did her beautiful skin tone ad angelic face win her plaudits, her dancing and sporting skills proved her all-round qualities. Not only did she represent ‘The Rock’ well, she excelled on the Miss World stage, earning a spot in the Top 7. Reminding me of a young Lisa Hanna, Robins was undeterred by the pressure and pulled off our best performance at a major pageant since Yendi Phillipps’ second-place finish at the 2010 Miss Universe pageant.

Her excellence made us proud and for that, I salute her.

9. Yendi and Chino have child together: Speaking of Yendi, she garnered attention for her belly more than the rest of her body in 2012. Phillipps received much praise and scrutiny when she announced her first pregnancy.

News of her first child with boyfriend and prominent Dancehall/Reggae star, Daniel ‘Chino’ McGregor brought lots of joy and congratulation to her life. However, Phillipps also faced tongue lashings from several detractors, including fans of her ex-boyfriend and former world-record holding runner, Asafa Powell.

Despite the trolling cartoons and the hateful messages, Phillipps was unmoved by the criticism. In late September, the Smile Jamaica co-host gave birth to a bouncing baby girl in late September. Reports of a possible engagement soon followed, but it’s clear that Yendi and Chino are now one of Jamaica’s power couples.

8. Deaths of Mighty Mike/Ewan McRae/Captain Barkey: With the joy of life comes the inevitable fate of death, and that sadly was realized in the case of three Jamaican entertainment veterans.

Mr. Vegas writing novel about cheating

If Dancehall/Reggae superstar, Mr. Vegas hasn’t documenting his baby mother’s cheating scandal enough, the popular singjay is using his traumatizing ordeal as inspiration to write an upcoming book.

The novel, Bare Tingz explores the issue of infidelity and will be Mr. Vegas’ first book.  The Bruk It Dung singer’s effort will be unveiled early next year

Vegas, in an interview with IRIE FM on Thursday, insisted that fans will be intrigued by this read, which he describes as a fiction novel.

“It’s another side of the business. People are interested in Mr. Vegas, so why not write a book.” he said. “The interest that is there, why not give the people something that they want to read?”

Mr. Vegas’ decision to pen this novel comes nearly two months after walking in on his baby mother and ex-girlfriend, Shelliann McBayne and her alleged lover as they were sleeping together in his Florida home. To make matters more controversial, Vegas’ then one and a half year old daughter walked in on the act, which was caught on security cameras.

But instead of sulking privately, Vegas has handled the aftermath of this saga publicly, social media and several interviews as well as the release of his single, Bare Tingz, which offers a light-hearted take on his situation. The official video for Bare Tingz featured actual footage caught from the incident.

Mr. Vegas is currently preparing for upcoming stage shows in Japan, as well as Las Vegas.

New pictures, texts emerge in ongoing Vegas saga

Just when everyone thought the drama involving Dancehall superstar, Mr. Vegas and his baby’s mother, Shellian McBayne had subsided, visual evidence has now emerged to add more controversy to this high-profile scandal.

A war of words played out last week between Mr. Vegas and McBayne after the entertainer claimed that he caught his baby’s mother sleeping with another man in his home. Vegas, who went on a day-long Twitter tirade about what he witnessed, also alleged that McBayne committed this act in front of their one-year-old daughter, a claim that the entertainer’s baby mother firmly denied.

The drama then spewed into the mainstream media where McBayne blasted Vegas in an interview with prominent talk show host, Kingsley ‘Ragashanti’ Stewart, insisting that the Bruk It Dung singer was unfaithful during their relationship and that she did not cheat on him given that they were broken up at the time of this most recent incident. Mr. Vegas quickly retorted on an interview with New York radio station, HOT 97, where he revealed that McBayne got married in the United States behind his back in an attempt to obtain citizenship in the United States while expressing fears over being able to see his daughter again, given that he has no legal rights to her as a result of the baby being born in wedlock overseas.

Vegas posted a picture of the man who he says slept with his girlfriend on his official Facebook page, with a caption stating, “NASTY BL*******T BWOY, WHAT KIND A MAN U IS F*****G IN FRONT OF MY 1 YR OLD DAUGHTER, IN MY HOUSE AT 2 PM. FIND A HOTEL B***H!”

Hundreds of Mr. Vegas’ fans came out both applauding and chastising his stance to publicize his baby mother’s actions, prompting Vegas to launch a strong defense, even hinting that fellow Dancehall star, MR. G warned him about his girl.

Mr. Vegas asks Reggae fans to save genre’s foundation with new petition

International Reggae star Mr. Vegas is urging fellow musicians and music fans to sign the Save Foundation Reggae petition – an appeal to radio disc jockeys to include the music of classic or ‘foundation’ Reggae pioneers like Dennis Brown, Bob Marley, Culture, and Alton Ellis into their Island Hop-driven playlists. The online petition also makes an appeal to Jamaica’s current crop of producers, who have flooded radio with Hip Hop inspired beats instead of the island’s signature bass-heavy rhythms.

“Reggae music is like the heartbeat of Jamaican people and culture, and now it is barely played on popular radio stations anymore,” says Clifford ‘Mr. Vegas’ Smith. “Young people today have no idea who Cynthia Schloss or Hortense Ellis or Delroy Wilson are. These are people, who pioneered Reggae, who created a space for people like Sean Paul, and even Sean Kingston and Iyaz to be pop stars. Radio barely plays foundation Reggae, and many of our producers have abandoned traditional Reggae and Dancehall rhythms for American sounding Hip Hop beats. This petition is to let them know that foundation Reggae is still a crucial part of our culture and we must preserve our musical heritage and legacy.”

Gyptian calls out Nicki Minaj, Mr. Vegas in online video

Internationally acclaimed singjay, Windel Beneto Edwards, more popularly known as Gyptian, is the subject of controversy following a drunken rant recently captured on video

A video surfaced Thursday on wickedhype.com with the “Beautiful Lady” singer in studio addressing how his collaboration with American hip-hop superstar, Nicki Minaj came about for the “Hold Yuh” remix. According to Gyptian, Minaj never jumped on the original “Hold Yuh” single when asked to voice the song. Once the single gained international acclaim, Gyptian implied that’s when Minaj decided to do the collaboration.

“Is a f**k up b, guess wah bun me out a everything and den di gal a jump pon di song. Di b***h a get $25,000 from VP dem fi get di bloodc***t song hard and never bloodc***t go pon di song, and when di song go out and get big now she jump pon di song off a her own. First ting she ask when dem ask her fi voice pon di song, Who Gyptian? She nuh kno mi,” Gyptian said.

Then, when producers in the studio intimated that Gyptian wasn’t an artiste who called out other artistes via Twitter, the singjay replied, “I’m not Vegas,” referring to prominent, veteran deejay, Mr. Vegas.

“Vegas mi an’ yuh no vex, but mi want yuh stop do wha yuh a do, yeah, da bag a chatting chatting dem an’ chat bad bout di bag a artist dem, especially me man, yuh sound like a sissy man. Mi cyaah even seh p***y cah u rich an’ yuh know yuh have u ting lock already,” a seemingly drunk Gyptian said.

This controversy comes five weeks following an incident in which an argument between Gyptian and veteran producer, DJ Frass led to the shooting death of a man at Supa Hype’s recording studio at Dumbarton Avenue in St. Andrew. Gyptian was reportedly questioned and released by the Major Investigation Task force following the incident.

Denied a Grenada work permit, Mr Vegas cries politics

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada – The Grenada government has refused a work permit to Jamaican dancehall artiste Clifford Smith, popularly known as Mr Vegas, who was scheduled to perform here on Saturday.

“This is political, it’s a political move by this government,” said Smith, who performed in Grenada at a rally of the then ruling New National Party in 2008.

“I risk my life to perform in an event, I did not even know it was a political event, and now this is how I am being thanked,” he said on a live radio broadcast today.

Promoter Steve Duncan said that no specific reasons had been given by the Ministry of Labour for refusing the work permit.

Duncan, who claimed to have invested more than EC$30,000 (US$11,110) in marketing the show, is questioning the move to ban the artiste and wants the government to say if it has a list containing the names of persons who should not perform in Grenada.

“If this government is placing a ban on a particular number of Caribbean artistes, then that should be public knowledge and should be brought to the attention of the promoters when the application for the work permit is made.”

Grenada’s labour laws do not require the Labour Minister to provide a reason for denying an artiste a work permit.

This is the second Jamaican artiste to be banned from performing here by the 19-month old Tillman Thomas administration. Last April, the government refused a work permit for artiste known as Vybz Kartel.

Meanwhile, a Roman Catholic priest is praising the government for its decision.

“I believe it has more to do with decency and the values we promote as the church as to crown it off we are presently in the middle of the Lenten season,” said Father Sean Doggett.

Last week, the Conference of Churches along with the Alliance of Evangelical churches issued a statement calling on media houses and promoters of live shows to exercise restraint during the 40-day Lenten period.

“We are asking them to avoid all forms of rudeness, vulgarity and obscenity as well as anything that militates against Christian morality,” the statement said.
