Jamaican athletes to get ‘Heroes’ welcome on Monday with special concert

Given the many fetes that Jamaica’s sporting heroes accomplished during this summer’s Olympics, it’s only fitting that the island’s athletes will be honored for their commendable efforts on National Heroes Day.

Just over two months after Jamaica completed their most successful Olympic games to date (12 medals – 4 Gold, 4 Silver, 4 Bronze), all of the island’s athletes will be commemorated during a litany of special events during Heroes Day weekend (October 13-15). Announced earlier this month by Jamaica’s sports minister, The Hon. Natalie Neita-Headley, four special activities will occur this weekend to recognize the achievements Jamaica’s 59 athletes earned during the Olympics. Additionally, all of Jamaica’s Olympians and team officials will receive monetary prizes for their efforts.

On Sunday morning, a church service will take place at the East Queen Street Baptist Church in Kingston while a cocktail reception for the athletes will occur at Jamaica House later that day. On Monday (Heroes’ Day), a new headstone will be unveiled honoring late Jamaican sprinting legend, Dr. Herb McKinley at National Heroes Park in Kingston.

All of these festivities will be capped off on Monday with a special concert which features Jamaica’s Olympians as well as performances from many of the island’s top musicians. The free concert, dubbed Jamaica’s Musical History Honouring Our Olympic Journey, will take place at the National Arena, starting at 7 p.m. and traces back Jamaica’s Olympic and musical transformation since 1948, when the island participated in the summer games for the first time.
