Popcaan “Love Yuh Bad” OFFICIAL VIDEO (Produced by Dre Skull)

Popcaan “Love Yuh Bad” OFFICIAL VIDEO (Produced by Dre Skull)

“Where We Come From” is the debut album from Jamaican superstar Popcaan. Executive produced by Dre Skull and featuring productions from Dre Skull, Dubbel Dutch, Jamie Roberts, Anju Blaxx and Adde Instrumentals, Popcaan’s first full length offering sees his signature melodies and uplifting tones on thirteen original tracks. As musicologist Wayne Marshall writes in his essay on the album:

“Where We Come From” gives voice, as the best reggae does, to the contradictions of life in a society rife with inequities and yet so rich. Whether odes to the ghetto or the good life, Popcaan’s lyrics bring realist portraits and utopian visions into dynamic tension. Songs about struggle and sex and happiness occupy the same space because they do. And whatever the topic, Popcaan’s infectious positivity comes through.

Anita Antoinette Top 10

Anita Antoinette to The Voice Top 10 following ‘Redemption Song’ rendition

Anita Antoinette Top 10All the talk this past week centered around why Jamaican-born singer, Anita Antoinette has not received much buzz in her native country during her run on The Voice. That may soon change as she continues to surge on the American talent show after being voted into the Top 10 Tuesday night following her performance of Bob Marley’s Redemption Song 24 hours earlier.

Antoinette received the second most votes of any competitor among the Top 12 coming into the results show, only trailing Team Adam’s Matt McAndrew. Her latest success validates talk surrounding her, from judges and viewers alike, as one of the favourites to take this year’s crown.

Having wowed onlookers with her performance of Meghan Trainor’s All About The Bass last week, Antoinette went back to her proverbial break and butter by going back to Reggae for her Top 12 set. Pulling a play from the Tessanne Chin playbook, Antoinette did a rendition of Rendition Song amidst a crowd filled with lights to help set up the ambience.

Unlike Chin, who turned up the decibels with sensational high note after high note with her version of the song’s chorus, Antoinette kept it low, but equally managed to ‘ride di riddim,’ as she showed some of the same vocal range and ability to draw in her audience that has been consistent since the blind auditions.

Her coach, Gwen Stefani was particularly moved, saying, “It was authentic, it was beautiful, and it was true,” she said. “I just feel blessed to be a part of it.” Fellow coach, Adam Levine, who coached Chin to victory on the show late last year, called her an ‘ambassador’ of Jamaica and credited her talent and ability to parlay Marley’s message with clarity.

The voters certainly agreed and helped her advance in the first segment of Tuesday’s show; a show in which she also performed alongside her Team Gwen colleagues and coach Stefani.

Antoinette’s journey continues next Monday when the Top 10 will be back in action.

New Artist Spotlight : Micha Ciselle (@michaciselle) – Lover’s Leap

micha

Jamaican-born artist, Micha Ciselle is gearing up to release her freshman EP this summer. The EP is called Lover’s Leap and the four-song compilation celebrates taking chances and Love — a term the songstress often uses as a metaphor for music. Mixed and Mastered by one of Jamaica’s most recognized engineers, Rohan Dwyer, Lover’s Leap will be the first official musical statement for this Island beauty. Half Trinidadian, half Jamaican, the LA-based singer ingeniously fuses the music of her oots with Pop and electronic music. A singer/songwriter at heart, Micha Ciselle wrote the lyrics for this project, as well as the music for two of the four tracks – “Ready for Love,” and “Fallin’”– which Dwyer then brought to life, enlisting the talents of some of Jamaica’s finest musicians. Lover’s Leap strongly reflects her dual nationality, and listeners can look forward to hearing prominent dancehall and reggae influences, soca references, and a distinct Pop flavor. The EP showcases her soulful vocals and intricate background vocal arrangements – a trademark she has become known for.
The title of the EP was inspired by the singer’s personal experience with music. Micha Ciselle
took a chance in 2010 and moved to California after being awarded LA College of Music’s most prestigious scholarship, where she was mentored by artists such as Dorian Holley (Michael Jackson, American Idol) and Tierney Sutton (multiple Grammy Award nominee). Since taking this leap of faith, Micha Ciselle has embarked on a steady journey, establishing herslef in the music industry. In 2011 she was invited to a private audition for The Voice where she was one of the few to progress in the audition rounds. In 2012 she contributed one of the top performing tracks on the compilation album – Absinthe. Produced by Jamaican outfit, Jus Eazy Productions, who have worked with artists such as Ky-mani Marley and Busy Signal, Absinthe also includes selections from Internationally acclaimed Jamaican group, Voicemail among others. In 2013 she collaborated with the TV/music producer of 3Gfilms, LA to create the single “Beautiful”. Micha Ciselle has also graced many stages in LA including The House of Blues, The Mint, Whiskey A Go Go and festivals such as David Arquette’s Piece Fest – the first festival of it’s kind for the actor. Lover’s Leap is a long-anticipated labor of love for Micha Ciselle and is the next logical progression in her musical forays.

Reggae Star Vision Debuts the Nostalgic “We Jammin” Video on MTV.com

Riding the musical wave of his latest “We Jammin” single success. Reggae Star Vision proudly takes his places amongst some of the biggest names in music by debuting “We Jammin” video on MTV.com and on YouTube.

The video shot on location in Florida and Jamaica was directed by Arturo Lorde and Dubloise

“We Jammin” delivers a nostalgic air of authentic reggae vibe aimed to evoke happy and memorable feelings to it’s listeners. In a recent statement to the media, Vision stated “We Jammin is a song that reflects the most memorable and happy  times of my life in Jamaica. Jammin means to kick back and relax, instead of saying Chillin or vibing, in Jamaica we just say Jam short for Jammin. The song tells you a lot about who I am and where I’m from. Living in America isn’t a bed of roses for most Jamaicans. Leaving our families behind and starting all over has its obstacles. So to past the time we jam reminisce on the good times back home in Jamaica. Thats what the song is about, its about we Jamaicans, even we immigrant. We all like Jammin in our own way.”

Produced by Jon “fx” Crawford and Dubloise for Keynote Records “We Jammin” is available on itunes.

Vision continues his music mission on October 25th, 2014 at Revolution Live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida alongside Morgan Heritage, Jemere Morgan and New Kingston Band. “It’s a joy to see the reception from the people as we bring the message of the music across the world.” stated a humble Vision.

“We Jammin is a song that reflects the most memorable and happy times of my life in Jamaica. Meet Jamaican born, singer-songwriter, Simon Mitchell, most infamously referred to by his stage name “Vision”. The name was inspired by Mitchell’s influential upbringing during his childhood stint as a member of his mother’s church choir. It was here that Vision decided that in all things life, he would be lead by faith and not by sight. Because of this mantra, following his musical transition to dance-hall, the international artist set out to create a promising new sound that he would later deem as “Roots Pop Reggae.”
But before there was Vision, there was Simon Alexander Mitchell. Born November 5 to a Jamaican mother and British-Jamaican father, Mitchell resided in England as a child while his father played professional soccer before later changing careers and moving Simon and his mother to Jamaica. It was here that the influence of the island’s strong musical culture would engulf Mitchell’s life and inspire him to become an artist. At the age of 12, the young boy was introduced to the piano, which he took to very well and would learn songs at a gifted pace. He’d soon realize his melodic knack for composing music. Fast-forward years later in which a football injury and a twist of fate would lead the former college athlete to a life of music. Read more.

Kranium Billboard

Kranium and Jah Cure highlight Billboard Reggae singles chart

Kranium BillboardOnly two current songs from Jamaican artists currently occupy the Top 50 of Billboard magazine’s Digital Reggae Singles chart, according to newly-released figures by Nielsen SoundScan.

New York-based newcomer, Kranium is the highest placed Jamaican on the chart at number 32 with his hit single, Nobody Has to Know, which has sold just under 18,000 copies. The song is also on Billboard’s Next Big Sound chart. Reggae superstar, Jah Cureis at number 45 with his cover of All of Me by John Legend, which has sold just over 1,000 copies.

The chart is dominated by American acts, but is topped by Canadian Reggae fusion band, Magic! with their single Rude, which has sold over 2.4 million copies and topped Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for several weeks while their song, Let Your Hair Down is second, selling over 48,000 units.

The Billboard Reggae Albums chart is more of the same as only Ziggy Marley’s album Fly Rasta hails as the only album by a Jamaican artist to hold a top 10 spot on the chart. Amid the Noise and Haste by American Reggae band, SOJA tops the chart while Count Me In by Rebelution and Easy to Love by Maxi Priest also occupy spots in the top five while the rest of the top 10 is dominated by compilation albums and other foreign acts.

Albums such as Chronixx’s Dread and Terrible which topped the chart earlier this month and Popcaan’s Where We Come From which debuted at number two have both fallen out of the top 10.
