VYBZ KARTEL: DANCEHALL’S ONE-MAN ARMY IN JAMAICA

Vybz Kartel isn’t just the biggest star in dancehall. These days, it seems like he’s the only one. The 35-year-old deejay from the gritty Kingston suburb of Portmore has dominated the Jamaican music conversation for the last year to such an extent that even his headline-grabbing (and only recently resolved) feud with long-time rival Mavado now seems a distant memory.

Fueling the phenomenon is a striking, Michael Jackson-like visual transformation that has seen him lighten his skin several shades, his hair suddenly long with extensions. A master of spin, Kartel first chalked his new coloring up to air conditioning and cake soap, a powerful cleanser used to wash clothes. Without actually copping to what most people suspect—that he bleaches his skin— he’s defended the practice by likening it to tanning white people and black women who straighten their hair. Fittingly, one of his biggest recent hits is called “Cake Soap”.

Kartel (aka Adidja Palmer) is also, arguably, Jamaica’s most prolific artist, churning out provocative commentary and lowbrow throwaway tracks with Tupac-like (in)consistency. His latest project, Kingston Story, is different, though. Recorded entirely with a single producer, Brooklyn’s Dre Skull, the result is a rarity for singles-driven dancehall: a proper album with a uniform sonic aesthetic. While the lyrics are primarily sexual in theme, the LP, with its quasi-orchestral rhythms, points to a new, more emotive direction for this most hedonistic of genres. MTV Iggy spoke with Kartel by phone from Jamaica about Kingston Story, his growing business portfolio, and what exactly he’s trying to prove with his outlandish behavior.

Baby Cham Responds to Toronto International Jamaica Day Organizers

Despite reports to the contrary, International Reggae and Dancehall Artist Baby Cham, as well as Madhouse Records, wishes to inform both Canadian and International

fans that the artist was in Toronto for the 21st annual Toronto International Jamaica Day celebration.  Baby Cham’s non performance was due to TIJD not honoring the negotiated agreement.

Baby Cham was prepared to take the stage on the evening of July 23rd, however, due to a contractual dispute and breach of contract, Baby Cham was not able to perform.  Amongst the several clauses not honored in the contract, the artists’ performance fee was not honored.

Despite the outstanding issues, Cham was set to take the stage, however, he was left waiting at the hotel, despite being told organizers were on their way to pick him up and take him to the venue.  Regrettably he could not perform.

In a statement, Cham says “several calls were made from my manager to the organizers of Jamaica Day, and to the agent who first negotiated the booking.  Those calls were not returned.  We were willing to work through the situation, but were refused by TIJD.”

The statement alleged by Sunrise Talent Development Programs Inc and TIJD, are false and misleading to all in attendance of Jamaica Day as well as to media.  “These statements should be disregarded as every effort was made to have our Artist perform.  We do hope that TIJD increases their efforts to honour contractual agreements and give their audience the shows that they promote and set out to deliver, and not lay blame on the performer” said Janet Davidson, co founder of Madhouse Records and Baby Cham’s Manager.

Baby Cham and the Madhouse Records family would like to say thank you to all Canadian and International fans for their continued support.  Baby Cham has never let the people down throughout his career, and has no intention of doing so now!

Twin of Twins take aim at Matterhorn with new single

Twin of Twins take aim at Matterhorn with new single

Popular Dancehall comedic duo, Twin of Twins have launched a scathing lyrical attack on controversial selector turned deejay, Tony Matterhorn with their latest single, “Cancer Free World.” “Cancer Free World” creatively uses Matterhorn’s name to defame his character; including a lyric from the song that states: “Yuh expose yuself wid di name wey yu find, cause Matterhorn a mountain wey bare man a climb.” A full version of the single will be released very soon.

The single was a direct response to recent comments Matterhorn made about them when the “Dutty Wine” singer claimed that he would diss the Twins anywhere he saw them after they alleged that he refused to play their songs during an interview last month in Atlanta. Matterhorn responded to those claims by tweeting, “How y’all never told me Twin of Twins was dissing me today on a radio station in Atl! Now I have to diss those 2 … it’s on … Those … twins! DUMB and DUMBER … it looks like Dancehall Duppy 3 is gonna be here sooner than I think! Lol,”

One of the Twins, Patrick “Curly Lox” Gaynor intimated that Matterhorn crossed the line with his response. “Matterhorn is the one that started the disrespect. He just became disrespectful and stupid,” Gaynor implied. Furthermore, the Twins suggested that they were the originators of calling up artistes’ names in songs long before Tony Matterhorn released his controversial single, “Dancehall Duppy,” that encourages deejays engaged in lyrical conflicts to call up each other’s names in songs. “We inspired him to make that song, we have the copyrights to call people’s name so Matterhorn naah duh nutting new,” Gaynor claimed.

Furthermore, The Twins called Matterhorn a hypocrite for calling out artistes such as Bounty Killer, Assassin & many others in the song before bigging them up in the last part of the song. They suggested that Matterhorn did so because he’s a coward & that one of the reasons they fell out with the selector is because Matterhorn wanted them to engage in “the politics of Dancehall,” by aligning with certain groups. “We refuse to shut up and join a side,” Patrick implied. Additionally, Patrick pointed out that they Matterhorn is using other artistes’ songs to diss them. “Him diss wi with him mouth and then him play people song as defense. Him fi know seh a nuh him a get the forward, is the artiste tune a get the forward. A fi him own song him fi try use, wi a nuh selector suh wi naah trace wid nuh man,” Gaynor intimated.

The Twins maintain they aren’t seeking any attention with “Cancer Free World,” but insisted that their “Stir It Up: Volume 9” CD is an international success; even suggesting Matterhorn hasn’t had a hit single since “Dutty Wine” back in 2006. The Twins’ new movie, Ching Pow Kickers is expected to debut this November.

Well renowned Dancehall deejay & Jag One Productions (J.O.P) leader, Sheldon “Aidonia” Lawrence has officially inked a management deal with Vybz Kartel’s former business partner, Corey Todd. Based on a character conceived of by Ziggy Marley, written by Man of Action Studios  and illustrated by Jim Mahfood, Marijuanaman promises to shatter all expectations — this is not the comic you think it is! The oversized deluxe hardcover graphic novel tells the tale of a noble extraterrestrial champion, who has arrived on Earth to deliver an important message and at the same time save his own planet.

“Marijuanaman represents the hope of the future… the hope that we will utilize all of the power that the universe has given us to save our planet,” Marley explained.

“Ziggy’s given us a great concept to go nuts with,” stated Casey. “This book goes beyond just being a comic…this book is an experience.” He’s a founding partner of Man of Action Studios, which will produce the upcoming Ultimate Spider-Man animated series premiering in 2012 on US cable channel Disney XD.

Mahfood adds, “Ziggy Marley is a visionary. Marijuanaman is not going to be what people except it to be.” He has worked on Clerks (with filmmaker Kevin Smith) and on Spider-Man books for Marvel, among other comics.

Marley’s newest and fifth solo album, Wild and Free, will release along with Marijuanaman this spring.
