Video: Serani Surprises Reggae Tip Show

Following up last year’s show-stealing performance at HOT 97′s On Da Reggae Tip show at the Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan, Serani re-affirmed he is currently one of the best live performers on the Dancehall scene.

An accomplished producer and musician, Serani decided it was time to showcase his skills to the world and started his performance on this year’s Reggae Tip show seated at the keyboard.

Dapperly-dressed in suit and tie, Serani started out singing new single Sweet Love and had the crowd watching in awe as he sung accompanying himself on the keyboard. He segued into his second Billboard hit single She Loves Me before jumping from the keyboard and continuing the rest of his high-energy set on tracks, spun by Troopa Chaloopa.

Serani had the audience in raptures for the rest of his set, interacting throughout as he gave them favorites such as Doh, Badmind and the classic No Games.

“I decided it was time to take my live set to another level,” said Serani. “The majority of people dont know that I can do that. Debuting this type of performance at On Da Reggae Tip was the right platform as its such a prestigious show with a diverse crowd. The feedback has been great and I will definitely be adding this element to my future performances.”

Serani closed out his set with dance anthem Skip To My Luu, leaving Hammerstein Ballroom satisfied and breathless by the time he left the stage.

Dancehall maestro Serani’s successful labour day weekend

Dancehall maestro Serani completed a very successful weekend in the US for Labor Day weekend, starting with a benefit concert in Brooklyn for Haiti, followed by a show-stealing performance at HOT 97′s On Da Reggae Tip event, that lit up social network sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Fellow artists and industry movers and shakers, as well as a slew of fans all expressed how hard Serani went at the sold-out Reggae Tip, held at the Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan, lauding him for best performance of the night.

“I think my performance surprised some people because I think they might not know how hard and how often I’ve been working,” said Serani. “I’ve been pretty much touring straight for two years non-stop and I’ve worked really hard at my stage craft. We’ve also been focusing on markets that could be described as non-traditional for Dancehall acts and really been trying to break those as well. I’ve been to Europe three times already this year so we’re just trying to get the music out there on a wide scale. Every artiste did very well at On Da reggae Tip and it was a great platform for me to showcase how far I have come.”

After rocking a Spanish club in Queens after Friday night’s Reggae Tip show, Serani made the dash from New York to Orlando for the inaugural staging of Reggae Fest at the prestigious Hard Rock Cafe inside Universal Studios. Performing alongside Shaggy, Rupee, Barrington Levy, Gyptian and others, Serani gave another performance that had the packed venue singing along to his songs.

Trekking back to New York on the Sunday, Serani appeared at BB Kings for Bobby Konders & Jabba, before demolishing Webstar Hall for a show hosted by HOT 97′s Mr Cee. With little sleep Serani then joined a host of Jamaican acts on Monday’s West Indian Labor Day Parade through the streets of Brooklyn, that attracts a crowd estimated to be in excess of one million people.

Serani leaves for the UK and Europe this month for several shows, before appearing at Miami Carnival in October. Serani has recorded tracks such as Pleasure on 2 Hard’s Circus riddim, single Slumber Party and I Forgive You on DASECA’s new Exodus riddim, as well as First Anniversary on hot producer Seanizzle’s soon-to-be-released Split Personality riddim, the follow-up to the monster One Day project. The video for Slumber party, shot in Europe, will be released this month.

His dancefloor smash “Skip to My Luu” featuring Ding Dong and Razz & Biggy has also started receiving some spins on commercial radio Stateside, which his management team are hoping will grow into adds to playlists on commercial radio, following in the footsteps of his classic No Games and She Loves Me. Serani is working towards the release of his sophomore album in March 2011.

Serani’s No Games released without Universal Republic

serani

“Its tough out there but we are remaining positive and focused on developing Serani as an artist and a brand,” said Julian Jones-Griffith, Serani’s manager, in the aftermath of shifting a little over 1100 units first week of his debut album, No Games.

“We are lucky that we have venture partners who believe in Serani, will stay the course and roll out a third single. They share our vision of artist development and breaking him in new markets. When you think how far Serani has come in terms of profile and mainstream airplay in under 2 years as an artist its a phenomenal achievement and hes out-paced many acts who have been on the scene for years. We’re closing in on 100,000 single downloads overall since we rolled out, which is huge, and I’m confident we will get where we want to go.”

In a climate where album sales have been culled dramatically in the space of a few short years, everybody has felt the brunt of the decline. Sean Paul came off the back of 4 million sold and did 28k first week. Sony rolled out 225,000 units first week for Sean Kingston on the strength of a huge Billboard hit and he shifted less than 15,000. Vybz Kartel, one of Jamaica’s hottest DJs, did 8 units total first week.

“Its a grind for everybody but for a Dancehall act trying to go mainstream there’s an added fight,” added Jones-Griffith. “Radio is a problem but its compounded at retail where its almost impossible to get product in stores. We bought ourselves out of the Universal Republic deal about 2 months ago and did a straight distribution deal with Razor & Tie, who went through Sony.

Sony of course just got burnt from the 200,000 Sean Kingston returned CDs so we ended up getting calls from all over our strong markets that the CD just wasnt in stores for people to buy. We’re presently addressing that and hope to re-solicit the product to retail early next year. We will build another radio story to help facilitate that and we are, as ever, working on that.”

Serani signed a 4 album deal with Universal Republic earlier this year but quickly became unhappy with the way things were playing out. Trusting in label partner Phase One Communications Serani and his management agreed that the best route would be to buy themselves out of the Uni-Republic deal and move forward as an indie. No Games was released October 27 on Phase One Communications/Rockstone Media Group, a company jointly owned by Serani and his manager.

“In some ways we cut too good a deal for ourselves with Universal Republic,” remarked Jones-Griffith. “They offered us a 360 deal with a healthy advance but knew the back- end would be minimal so we passed on that and cut a unique distribution-with-creative-services deal.

I think Republic soon regretted that they would not be seeing the lion’s share of profit that a major is used to so we found that we were still coming out of pocket to cover a lot of things going forward and quickly fell off their priority list. Phase One said lets give back Universal what they’ve laid out and we wont have to give up those points to them, which made sense in the bigger picture. So we took the brave decision to go it alone, drop the album in the 4th quarter and keep the forward movement going. We’re going with Take Me Higher as the third single with which we will be going after Top 40.”

Serani is continuing to promote No Games across the country, rounding out his North East promotion this week with release parties in Jersey and different demographics in New York, before heading out to the Mid West, Atlanta, Florida and Canada. Trips to the UK and Haiti will round out a landmark year for Serani, who will undoubtedly carry this momentum into 2010.

Behind the Beats: Serani

serani

Serani may be best known for his breakout hit “No Games,” but the emerging Jamaican artist first made a name for himself crafting songs for some of his homeland’s biggest stars.

“I’m a musician from birth, I played the keys from birth,” Serani said. “As time went on, when I became a teenager I was listening to Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Capleton and Sizzla. I would listen to the beats and thought, ‘Why are they on some of these? They could do better.’ And I knew I had the talent to do it.”

He got his start working as a musician, contributing to Wayne Marshall songs. Eventually he formed Daseca Productions with two partners, and the trio were able to power hits by some of the same artists Serani listened to coming up. Their big break came when they scored a couple of knockout hits, producing Tony Matterhorn’s “Dutty Wine” and Sean Paul’s “We Be Burning.”

” ‘We Be Burning’ was the first real big move,” Serani said.

The producer had long been a frequent collaborator with Mavado, and the two developed a brotherly relationship. While working with Mavado, Serani found his voice — he’d coach artists while producing their records and found he had a knack for melody.

Although he had no formal experience singing, family and friends pushed him to develop his vocals.

“I was doing that and I was teaching a lot of artists how to sing,” he said of his time manning the boards. “I didn’t know I could do it, but I knew keys. Eventually, as I’m making the beats, I start coming up with ideas for myself and as the time goes by, the ideas start getting better and better. This is, like, 2007, so I just started doing it. My voice started getting better and I said, ‘Let’s do it.’ ”

Now with “No Games” as his first certified solo hit, Serani is prepping for the release of his debut of the same name, due October 27.

Next Wave of Flav

On Mavado: “He’s like my son in music. He’s older than me, but I feel like he’s my son, ’cause I taught him so much in music as a producer. I’m like his son in terms of singing, if you wanna say so. We have a good relationship. I still produce songs with Mavado. He’s my brother.”

Serani putting in serious work promoting debut album

SERANIThe DASECA producer-turned-singjay has been collaborating with mainstream American rappers such as Queen Latifah, DJ Webstar and the ‘Making the Band’ winners Day 26. When THE STAR spoke to the singjay recently, he was on set in Los Angeles at his video shoot for the single She Loves Me. The video is being directed by Rich Newey who has worked with the likes of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, fellow Jamaican Sean Paul, Nate Dogg and Christina Aguilera, among others.

much-anticipated

Serani told THE STAR about some of the collaborations including the Neptunes-produced reggae love song, If He Wanna with Queen Latifah. The song appears on Latifah’s much-anticipated album Persona, which was released in July.

“Basically, Queen Latifah heard I was free and was excited about doing something with me. I was glad to do the song and I love what I did with it. She has been bigging me up on interviews she’s been on like ‘Regis and Kelly’ and ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’,” said Serani.

He also completed a club song with DJ Webstar, who is known for the Chicken Noodle Soup dance and song. The collaboration is called Tipsy In Da Club, and according to Serani, it might be the first single to be released from Webstar’s upcoming album.

“I also have a song coming out with Day 26 which is kind of a R&B and hip hop. Me and them have a good relationship. I had met one of them before when he did backup vocals for a song I did with Wyclef,” Serani explained.

four-album deal

Another upcoming single should be released soon with veteran rapper Bun B and possible work with rapper Jim Jones. Serani said, “I have a good relationship with Jim Jones who came out wid me on Hot 97′s On Da Reggae Tip. So we’re suppose to be doing something together as well.”

Outside of collaborations, Serani is looking forward to the release of his first album No Games on October 27. This will be one of the albums from the four-album deal the artiste signed with Universal Records in January.

The first single to be released from the album was the title track No Games, which peaked at number 53 on the Billboard Hot Hip Hop/R&B charts.

Recently, She Loves Me, the second single to be released overseas, debuted at number 82 on the Billboard Hot Hip Hop/R&B Chart. The album will feature collaborations with Ding Dong with Skip To My Luu and features work from fellow DASECA member Raine Seville.

Serani said, “I’m here just promoting, just a work hard. October 27, dat a di biggest thing right now and I’m very excited, I can’t wait.”

Fader: Ghetto Palms 69: New Serani / Daseca Riddims

After a brief summer hibernation, production trio Daseca are back on the set with a vengeance—and when Serani and co. are not working out their Anger Management issues on a Bounty Killer affiliated project, they can kill a lover’s tune like nobody else.

First up is the Ricky Blaze produced Webstar collabo “Tipsy,” which smells like Koch records’ 808-clap strategy for bussing Serani on crossover radio. It definitely works in a PNG/Ron Browz kinda way but if they were smart they would be looking at the Daseca-built “Be With You” which is more dancehall, more pop, and more genius. Which is to say it’s more Serani being himself, the Ryan Leslie of soundclash.

Then there’s a quick juggling of a few selects from two new riddims—the R6 and the Coke Zero—from Daseca doing what they do best with big chords and spare, epic, arrangements. Over the first, Mavado delivers the most credible and least-creepy love song he’s ever done. Not once does he use the term “cocky” or say anything date-rapish. Which makes me think that either Daseca ghost-wrote it or he found true love and gave up stalking for good. Both beats also make a surprisingly good vehicle for Voicemail, who have graduated from raw bwoy-band to surprisingly sophisticated r&b-hall, if you fuck with that sort of thing. Then I threw in one more freeload from Serani getting lovey-dovey again on the previously reviewed School Yard/Ting a Ling throwback. Serani, “When it’s Cold”

This column would not be complete, however, without pouring out some lighter-fluid in recognition of keyboardist Wycliffe ‘Steely” Johnson who passed away in a New York Hospital yesterday. As one half of the legendary “Steely & Clevie” rhythm section he helped to shape several generations of reggae music. Among countless other accomplishments, Steely & Clevie produced both the Mud Up and the Punaany riddims—for my dollars, the first two modern dancehall rhythms on which the whole ’90s bashment revolution was founded. Beaucoups respect, Steely.

It’s. It’s New Seraaani. R Six Riddim + “Skip To My Luu”

daseca

Serani’s moment in New York was summer 2008, with “Doh,” “No Games” and “She Loves Me” all on constant rotation on both pirate stations and Hot97, and he’s been trying to get an album filled with that same music out for a while now. Hopefully, that will still happen, but for everyone who’s already ready for some new Serani/Daseca emotional dancehall, here is Serani’s version on Daseca’s new R Six riddim and a random joint that also has dancer-turned-deejay, best named Ding Dong. Both are absurdly upbeat and perfect for the doggy days of summer.

As one-third of the hitmaking production squad Daseca (Sean Pauls We Be Burnin, Mavados Real McKoy, Tony Matterhorns Dutty Whine), Serani has quietly defined the sound of dancehall music over the last several years. Now, the triple-threat singer/producer/musician-think Pharrell with a Jamaican accent- is poised to become the next artist to represent Jamaica to the world, with a style thats as in tune with R&B and pop as it is reggae.

SERANI – “FINDING THOSE MELODIES”

coverjuneWho is Serani? musician, singer, songwriter, a jack of all trades . Craig Serani Marsh at a young age developed a passion for music and one day decided he and his two life long friends which also shared the same passion would  form a production company called DASECA. DASECA which is the acronyms of the founding members names was formed in 2001, Unfortunately at the time it was only a dream, being ridiculed for paying more attention to music than school serani held fast to his dreams and did not let go. His first major debut was the production of Anger management riddim which was at a stand still for a long period of time, not being known in the industry major artistes were reluctant to record on a riddim of a “NO NAME” producer. As the riddim began to create a buzz in the dancehall industry, artistes began to beat down the door of Daseca productions studio. This very riddim was the rise to fame for Mavado hailing from the gully with “Real McCoy”. With the help of Bounty Killer, Serani now had his foot in the door and refuse to go down without a fight. Focusing more on “FINDING THOSE MELODIES” serani was more into production at the time and took it very seriously.

Serani has co-produced the first two singles on Sean Paul’s platinum album “Trinity,” including ‘We Be Burning,’ which was the first released single. The ‘We be Burning’ track helped Trinity smash a Jamaican record of 107,000 copies sold in the first week.

Serani decided to take his first stab at singing while producing tracks for Mavado adding a falsetto hook to the heartfelt 2006 single “Dying.”  When the song became a hit, Serani took it as a cue to start making his own tracks and, in 2007, his debut single, “Doh,” shot to the top of the Jamaican charts and broke him onto U.S. radio stations such as New York’s Hot 97. Now firmly established as an artist in his own right, he has followed with a string of successful singles including “She Loves Me,” “Study People” and “No Games,” his biggest hit to date. The track, which meshes the pulsing throb of dancehall with an emotive R&B hook, has landed him on radio stations across the U.S. as well as the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart.

”Serani has sold thousands of downloads and ringtones for months, and now No Games has replaced Bob Marley’s anthem, that sells an average of 5,500 a week in downloads on iTunes.

“No Games is actually still gaining in spins across the country,” said Serani’s manager. “This record just won’t go away. Its still getting added to playlists in many states across the country every week so it continues to spread.

Serani is looking beyond the Jamaican market and straight at the world. “I’m a Jamaican artist but I just make music, period,” he says. “I always try to keep that dancehall influence but I don’t need a dancehall beat for my music to be Jamaican and pop at the same time. All I need is my voice. I open my throat and you hear Jamaica shining.

SUMMER JAM 2009 ROUND UP!!

mavado_smWhen the smoke cleared in the Giants stadium Sunday night, Dancehall had taken another huge step into the mainstream courtesy of Mavado, Serani and Elephant Man, all of whom represented different aspects of Dancehall music very well to around 50,000 patrons.

All 3 acts did very well on the main stage, Serani’s greatly-improved stage presence shone, with his crossover hit No Games proving to be the monster it is. Mavado, representing the hardcore side of Dancehall, stalked the stage commandingly, and was given a great response to hits such as “Whe Dem a Do?” “On the Rock” and “So Special.” Elephant Man lived up to his Energy God moniker and had the whole stadium signalling the plane!

“We got huge exposure from this show,” said Mavado after his performance. “The on-air promotion HOT 97 gave us in the run-up to the show was priceless, as well as being able to sing in front of so many people on the same bill as Mary J Blige, Jay Z and so many others. Its the first time I’ve performed in front of such a huge crowd and I was very pleased at the response.”

“You could see people rocking way in the upper tiers at the back when we were on stage” added Serani, who’s birthday actually fell on the same day as SUMMER JAM, the biggest show in his life. “The whole crowd wished me happy birthday during my performance which was the best present I think I ever had! Shout out to HOT 97, Ebro, Jill, Bobby & Jabba, Mr Cee, Flex, Cipha, Angie, Willie Daniels, all those who made this possible.”seraninew

Patrons left the stadium very pleased by the newly-added Dancehall segment and HOT 97 have already indicated that it is something they would like to continue with for future Summer Jams.

Apart from the well-received Dancehall segment, the talk of the night was when Jay Z, who arrived Obama-style in a van surrounded by security guards with ear pieces jogging alongside the vehicle, touched the stage with Young Jeezy.

Jay Z released a song titled D.O.A (Death of Autotune) on Friday on the station and by Sunday night he had 50,000 people singing along.

“I’ve never seen that happen before,” said Hip Hop DJ legend Funkmaster Flex. “I’ve been doing this a long time and I’ve never seen anything like that!”

Friday night saw Mavado and Serani in Hartford, CT, where they performed on HOTJAM 8, alongside Soulja Boy, Bow Wow, Drake, Fabolous, Trey Songz and more.

“We’ve been on around a half dozen of these type of events this year which has never been done by more than one Dancehall act,” said manager Julian Jones-Griffith. “Our aim is to get Dancehall artists as a must-have on these types of shows, so that our music and our artists are positioned alongside urban music in the US. With the great reception Mavado and Serani have been receiving from the mainstream hopefully things are changing for the genre.”

SERANI BREAKS RECORDS!!

seraniAlliance star Serani’s bonafide hit “No Games” has landed at the #1 spot on America’s reggae iTunes Chart for the first time, knocking Bob Marley’s timeless classic “Three Little Birds” off the top spot. Having been selling thousands of downloads and ringtones for months, No Games has been flirting with the #1 spot for sometime, but now replaces Bob Marley’s anthem, that sells an average of 5,500 a week in downloads on iTunes.

“No Games is actually still gaining in spins across the country,” said Serani’s manager. “This record just won’t go away. Its still getting added to playlists in many states across the country every week so it continues to spread.”

Serani recently recorded a remix for No Games with songstress Shontelle, while on tour in the UK. Shontelle scored big in the UK with her recent hit “T-Shirt” and being label mates Universal Music made the match and hooked up the two artists. Universal/Island Records will release the No Games + remix package digitally on July 6th.

“Shontelle was great to work with,” said Serani. “She’s a very talented songwriter and she has a great personality so the chemistry was good in the studio. The remix is hot.”

Mavado – “Dancehall’s New King?”

dhusacover-1What is considered a king of dancehall? So far there have been kings such as Bob Marley, Shaggy, The self proclaim king himself Beenie Man and questionably Dutty Cup’s own Sean Paul. Can Mavado live up to these expectations… we ask that question.

David Brooks aka Mavado hail from the streets of Cassava Piece in Kingston Jamaica is the hottest thing in dancehall right now. Known for his melodic vocals his music has crossed borders that most Jamaican artists dream about. Collaborating with the likes of 50 cent, Busta Rhymes and also recording on a Kanye West track for Jay Z’s  forth coming album the Blueprint 3, with this international success he is undoubtedly the hip hop voice of Jamaica.

With his current hit single “so special” receiving crazy airplay on American radio and his new album “Mr. Brooks Better Tomorrow” climbing the billboard charts he has cemented jam-packed shows in the UK, that also featured Serani, Bugle, Chase Cross and Alliance selector Boom Boom, Mavado moved on to his first-ever European Tour Visiting 6 countries for 9 shows in 10 days across the continent, Mavado has been met with nothing but love, underlining the international appeal of his music and message.

“The response everywhere we’ve been has been mad,” said Mavado. “Paris was the first show and it was crazy, the venue was packed and the crowd sang every word. It set the tone for the rest of the tour which has just been more of the same.”

dscn0089 Traveling by day and performing night after night, Mavado has so far blazed through France, Belgium, North and South Italy and across Switzerland, and will finish up with shows in Germany, Holland and US.

Whilst every show has left the crowd in rapture, perhaps the most poignant appearance was in Zurich, Switzerland, the city where his Father was killed over 3 years ago. Mavado got the chance to meet with some of the elder Mr. Brook’s friends, who knew him as “King” and to cap off a memorable visit Lee Scratch Perry, who is based in Zurich and was also a good friend of Mavado’s Father, attended the show.

With all these achievements and accomplishments and ongoing success can we now truly say that Mavado the Gully God is now the king of dancehall? Since the controversial battle at sting his nemesis Vybz Kartel now has numerous top 10 singles in “Jamaica” and can be heard practically on every new dancehall riddim that hits the streets, Should Vbyz Kartel be dubbed the king or is he just second best, what makes them different?
