Updated 6/20 – Behind The Scenes: “TWERK IT” by Busta Rhymes (ft. Nicki Minaj)

Busta Rhymes and Nicki MinajInternationally acclaimed rappers, Nicki Minaj and Busta Rhymes have combined their Caribbean roots to create a new single recorded entirely in Jamaican patois.

The curvaceous Trinidadian-American rapper and Jamaican-born hip-hop veteran recently recorded a remix to Busta Rhymes’ hit single, Twerk It, voicing the song in their best Jamaican dialect. The Pharrell Williams produced remix was unveiled on Thursday, featuring lyrics from that paid tribute to Jamaica’s Dancehall elite, including Beenie Man, Bounty Killer and Vybz Kartel.

“Dutty gal, when ya see mi and what yu fi do/ Bow down, big chain and it heavy too,” Minaj sings while she and Rhymes sing, “Come here gyal wey yu a duh? What a gwaan? Dun wid dat, Dutty Wine … Tony Matterhorn … Kartel, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer too roll di weed buss a dutch all Rizla too.”

Though in the past, many American entertainers have used Dancehall samples, verses and Jamaican sayings in their music, this is the first time two American rappers have ever done a song entirely in Jamaican patois

Neither Busta Rhymes nor Nicki Minaj are strangers to implement Dancehall themes in their music. Busta Rhymes has used dialect in many of his songs and scored noteworthy collaborations, such as his chart-topping hit, Make It Clap (feat. Spliff Star and Sean Paul) as well as Wine and Go Down, alongside Vybz Kartel.

Minaj has long expressed her affection for Jamaican music as well, featuring on the remix for Gyptian’s hit song, Hold Yuh in 2010 and featured on French Montana’s recent single, Freaks, which samples the Murder She Wrote rhythm created by Sly and Robbie. She was also the headline international act at the 2011 edition of Reggae Sumfest.

Sly and Robbie help emerging artiste to show ‘Survivalist’ skills with new song

Following the recent announcement of a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album, prominent Jamaican producers, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare are mixing their creative juices once more to help prop up a promising new Reggae act.

Sly and Robbie have produced a large catalogue of hits and one of their latest projects adds to their esteemed résumé as they’ve teamed up with promising Reggae singer, Survivalist. Dubbed as The Anointed One and Da’ Living Survivor, Survivalist has scored with his new single, Give The Youth Dem a Income.

The conscious track tackles the ever-growing issue of unemployment within Jamaican society and calls for the government and potential employers to offer young people chances to make positive and constructive changes to their communities. As the song’s chorus preaches, “Give The Youths dem a income, you will see a better outcome.”

Survivalist’s plea for a better tomorrow for our future is evident throughout Give The Youth Dem a Income, as he sings to the suffering young people throughout inner cities and across Jamaica go through as they struggle to make ends meet for their families, “When I see unemployment, no enjoyment, pure frustration, mi feel so torment. Nuff excitement over one indictment, jus’ another day filled with disappointment.”

The promising singer continues to express his hope that young people are afforded opportunities that deviate them from negative influences., singing, “Mi seh we got to come up with an I.D.E.A, Drugs is not my cup of T.E.A, I doe wah be caught by no D.E.A, cause too much youths a tun up M.I.A.”

These four minutes of inspiring messages and clever wordplay covers an unlimited time of frustration expressed at the system and its efforts to create employment opportunities across the board. To make Survivalist’s efforts heard, Sly and Robbie ensured the drums and bass were played to perfection while the sweet voice of Buju Banton’s sister, Adena Myrie offer scintillating background vocals to further emphasize his points.

Survivalist’s song is already a chart-topping hit and extends the long list of successes attained by his label, Super Power Records, which produced legendary acts such as Shabba Ranks, Super Cat and Admiral Bailey.

Give The Youth Dem a Income can be heard on Survivalist’s official Reverbnation page as well as Super Power Records’ official MySpace page. It’s worth a listen and a replay.
