Tarrus Riley petitions for peace with new single – ‘Wildfire’

Get the Flash Player to see the wordTube Media Player.

Talented Jamaican Singer and Songwriter Tarrus Riley delivers a powerful socio-conscious message renouncing the scourge of violence on his latest release ‘Wildfire’. Teaming up with hard hitting producer Don Corleone, Riley’s petition for peace hits a sincere note as he pleads to a higher power to protect his nation against the rising levels of violence. His chorus to “protect the people” comes on the heels of recent calls by several Jamaicans at home and across the Diaspora to take a stand against crime, “Wildfire speaks directly to existing social issues in Jamaica, the kind of issues we need to address head on. I want my listeners to understand the realities we are dealing with in our nation as well as call on each one to support their brother as we reclaim our land”.
Now in heavy rotation across local and Caribbean airwaves, Riley recently concluded shooting the corresponding video and is expected to debut it in coming weeks. A versatile and accomplished musician, Tarrus’ melodious harmonies have endeared him to a large number of reggae fans across the Caribbean, US, UK, Canadian and Japanese markets. Having scored a slew of chart hits from his latest compilation ‘Contagious’ such as the title track Love’s Contagious, Living The Life Of A Gun, Good Girl Gone Bad, Start Anew among others, Riley is easily one of the most popular and well respected artistes in reggae music today. With a solid booked schedule headlining several dates across the US and Caribbean, Riley is currently gearing up to perform at the international reggae and dancehall music showcase Reggae Sumfest on July 24th.

Tarrus Riley shines in Europe and US. Nabs RMAA Nomination

Reggae Singer and Songwriter Tarrus Riley ended his 2009-2010 Europe and North America ‘Contagious’ tour on a high note closing with a sensational set at the 17th annual Bob Marley Movements Caribbean Festival in Miami, Florida.

After a successful leg in US and Canada late last year, the artiste resumed his album title tour this January through March making waves in some thirty cities across France, Belgium, London, Sweden, Spain, Holland, Italy, Switzerland, Czech Republic and Germany as well as completing stints in California and Florida. His first extended set in Europe, while the cold whistled and howled outside, Riley warmed patrons up with some sweet music on the inside, “With Tarrus Riley you can always expect to hear ‘feel good music’…music with a meaning as well as music that uplifts the spirit and soul and I delivered just that. The set list had a great mix of material – hits from the previous albums including ‘She’s Royal’, ‘Lion Paw’ as well as current material from the Contagious album including ‘Start Anew’, ‘Love’s Contagious’, ‘Human Nature’, ‘Living The Life of A Gun’ among others. The crowd was highly responsive at each venue and you could see that they were visibly tuned in, singing along with us word for word and really enjoying themselves.”

Performing to sold out stops each night across Europe including Ghent in Belgium, the Sapphire Club and the Brixton Academy in London, Stockholm in Sweden and the U- Club in Wuppertal, Germany, Riley who was joined by rising Reggae stars I-Octane, Duane Stephenson and the Blak Soil band led by saxophonist extraordinaire Dean Fraser, then travelled to the US where they were well received  at the Fox Theater in Oakland, California, The Catalysts in Santa Cruz, the Arcata Theater in California amongst multiple additional venues before Riley capped things off as a headline act at the Bob Marley Movements Caribbean Festival. “The North America stops were also really great this time around…Still a bit chilly but definitely not as cold as Europe” said Tarrus. “We were concentrated this leg towards the West in California then headed South to Florida whereas the last time we touched a bit of everywhere including Canada, Rhode Island, New York, Virginia etc. We again brought the best of our positive vibes spreading the message of positivity, unity and love through good, clean music.”

And while Riley was covering significant ground on his international ‘Contagious’ Tour, he was also making a clean sweep at local award presentations as well as receiving international nods and securing top spots on international music charts. At the Excellence in Music and Entertainment (EME) he copped the Cultural Artiste of the Year as well as won the Best Cultural Artiste category at the local Youth View Awards. Following this, Riley’s laurels continued with recent nomination for top “International Reggae Artist” at RMAA (Reggae Music Achievement Awards) which will be held in Toronto, Canada on June 12, 2010 as well as he celebrates the number one spot for his album ‘Contagious’ in Canada on Galaxie TV Satellite Channel (Bell TV, Rogers TV, Videotron TV, MTS TV, Sasktel TV, Shaw TV, Telus TV).

A stellar first yearly quarter sealed by sold out tours and significant wins and nominations, Riley who is now back on the ‘Rock’ says he will resume writing and recording new material as well as continue to push his Contagious album which has been doing very well internationally, “I enjoy writing and making music. That process never stops…I love what I put out and the people love what we put out so we always have to keep it fresh and keep it going.”

Aidonia & Tarrus Riley, “Di Trees”

aidonia_107A few weeks ago in his Ghetto Palms column, Stats rattled off five different versions of the new Go-Go Club Riddim but left out this fiery duet from two  favorites. Aidonia, the JOP leader, is fresh off his ’90s rap/bmore/dancehall smashing Bolt Action mixtape and comes with about ten different styles on this one while Riley favors the rougher side of his lover/fighter split. We would not be opposed to these two joining up for more jams—two great emoters demanding they be allowed to grow tons of weed. Who do we have to email to make this happen? The pot farms and the duets.

The secret to the success of Tarrus Riley, believe it or not, is quite simple – “when preparation meets opportunity”, stated a self-assured Riley. “I’ve been surrounded by music all my life. My father is a singer and my mother is a bathroom singer”, he explains with a chuckle. “Because I can’t change the world, I sing for the people – this is the contribution I can make and after I make a song; it isn’t even mine anymore; it belongs to the people.”

August 2009 Reggae Albums Releases

Contagious. | Release date: Aug. 4, 2009. | Label: VP Records.

Awarded Best Male Vocalist and Best Song at the 2008 International Reggae and World Music Awards, Tarrus Riley is the most promising of the second generation of Jamaica roots reggae singers. With an August 4, 2009 release of his much-anticipated third set CONTAGIOUS on Cannon Productions, distributed by VP Records, Tarrus Riley reaffirms that he is one of finest singer/songwriters of his generation, irrespective of musical genre. The son of Jimmy Riley – who has had a long career as a solo artist as well as being a former member of the Uniques and the Techniques. In addition, his strong stage presence gives him crossover appeal and marks him as a coming force on the international reggae scene

Imperial Blaze.| Release date: Aug. 18, 2009. | Label: Atlantic Records.

Sean Paul is known primarily for his airtime devouring, party-engineered, reggae pop tracks, but for his next album the singer said that he wants to take a more responsible path, and focus on youth violence in Jamaica. Some of the tracks from the new socially conscious Sean Paul album include titles like, “She Want Me,” “Birthday Suit,” “Hold My Hand,” and “Don’t Tease Me.” Left off was Sean Paul’s climate change warning, “Gimme Dat Booty.”

Light. | Release date: Aug. 25, 2009. | Label: Sony.

Matisyahu had been working on his third album for nearly two years, making it the longest time he has ever spent making a record. The follow-up to Youth had been delayed several times before its release. First scheduled for early 2008, Light was pushed back numerous times because Matisyahu continued to tour off and on since the release of Youth. The new album’s release date was set for April 21, 2009, but on March 3, the release date was pushed back to May 12, 2009. Then, once again, he pushed the release back, this time to Summer 2009, ostensibly because Matisyahu decided to record more new songs. That date had already passed, and in a message from Matisyahu on Twitter the album is due to release on August 25th.

Our World. | Release date: Aug. 25, 2009. | Label: VP Records.

TOK’s third album, Our World, is scheduled to be released in August, according to the group’s website. It will be distributed by VP Records. Afternoon Porn Star is the set’s lead single. It is produced by Tony Kelly, one of the top dancehall producers of the last 15 years. The quartet (Craigy-T, Flexx, Alex and Bay-C) has made a name as a hit-single group. They are best known for the songs When Doves Cry.

Their debut album, My Crew My Dawgs, was released in 2001 while the second, Unknown Language, came four years later. The latter contained the hit songs Gal Yuh Lead and Footprints.

tarrusrileyAwarded Best Male Vocalist and Best Song at the 2008 International Reggae and World Music Awards, Tarrus Riley is the most promising of the second generation of Jamaica roots reggae singers. Riley’s songs retain ties to the Jamaican roots tradition while still managing to sound distinctly contemporary.

The album is grounded in a roots reggae tradition that is recast with a gleaming 21st century sheen courtesy of the album’s primary producer, venerable saxophonist Dean Fraser and created by Grafton and Tuff Gong studios sovereignty including Sly and Robbie on drum and bass, guitarists Mitchum “Khan” Chin and Cat Coore, keyboardist Robbie Lyn and Dean Fraser’s impassioned sax styling.Contagious remarkably shifts between smoothly crooned lover’s rock and artful Rastafarian declarations, provocative commentaries and dancehall’s combustible edge, its cohesion provided by Tarrus’s spectacularly emotive vocals and reliably inspiring words. As its title indicates, this highly infectious collection of 18 songs is characterized by symptoms of melodiousness, rapturous roots rhythms and hard hitting lyrical realities that are transmitted through repeated spins, resulting in a high grade musical fever from which you will not want to recover. “The reason why I called it ‘Contagious’ is because I would love for everyone to catch it,” says Tarrus. “I don’t want my music to have boundaries of race, age, nationality or religion; I represent reggae, live music, and I want everyone to catch on to its positive, good vibes.”

In support of Contagious, Tarrus will embark on a 25-city tour. From Toronto to Jacksonville, his aim is to meet fans and gain some new ones. His strong stage presence gives him crossover appeal and marks him as a coming force on the international reggae scene.
