Etana, the Jamaican-born, Miami-raised songstress, returns with her brand new digital-only EP Reggae on November 13th with VP Records. The 3-song preview off her upcoming studio album Better Tomorrow will give fans a taste of what is to come in February 2013. The entire set is produced by Shane Brown with Stanley “Rellee” Hayden co-creating the title track.

The charismatic singer, songwriter and performer incorporates elements of reggae, soul and pop into her captivating postmodern sound that tackles real life experiences. Etana’s unabashed romanticism shines on the soulful sway of “Reggae” and the r&b tinged “4 Play 2 Love (Start Over)” about her torn feelings of two lovers. The spine-chilling single “Better Tomorrow” addresses the atrocities of children in poverty-stricken communities, while instilling optimism for brighter days. Etana’s lyrical depth and revolutionary thought continue to impress and inspire her audience.

With a baby on the way, new EP and album in the works, Etana is in a place in her life where she looks forward to a promising future. She expands upon her 2010 sophomore album Free Expressions, which won praise for the being “a rarity: music that sermonizes, yet still sweetly serenades,” according to NPR. The anticipated album Better Tomorrow and EP Reggaeexpress a similar sentiment, while offering new-found wisdom and clarity. These releases also follow her 2008 critical acclaimed debut The Strong One, which featured massive hits “Warrior Love,” “Roots” “I’m Not Afraid,” “Blessings” and “Wrong Address” that topped reggae charts in The Caribbean, England and United States. During this period, Etana was nominated for Best New Reggae Artist at MOBO Awards and awarded Best Female Vocalist at both the Excellence in Music & Entertainment (EME) Awards and IRIE FM Radio Awards as well as the Best Solo Female Reggae Vocalist at the 1st annual Reggae Academy Awards. Vibe Magazine claimed she had already “established herself as a formidable performer and songwriter whose music and reputation precedes her.”

Beenie Man retrieves United States work permit

Internationally acclaimed Dancehall superstar, Beenie Man will finally return to a U.S. stage after his work permit to the North American country has been officially reinstated.

Despite being issued a United States visa last summer, Beenie Man has yet to perform at an event in the country since his work permit was revoked by the Embassy of the United States in Kingston over two years ago. As a result, the self-professed King of the Dancehall was unable to perform on BET’s 106 and Park alongside Trinidadian-American hip-hop megastar, Nicki Minaj as originally scheduled this past April.

However, Beenie Man will perform at the first ever Groovin’ In The Park concert on July 1 at Roy Wilkins Park in the New York based borough of Queens. CEO of Groovin Inc. Christopher Roberts announced that Beenie Man will be a headliner at his company’s upcoming event while expressing glee regarding the prominent deejay’s retrieval of his American work permit.

“I am extremely excited to announce that our booking agent here in New York was able to secure a work permit for the Dancehall king, Beenie Man to be a headline performer at this year’s ‘Groovin In the Park’ concert on July 1,” Roberts said in a statement.

“Music fans in the tri-state area have been waiting for a very long time for the opportunity to see Beenie Man perform live here in the USA again. I am glad we were instrumental in making it happen for the fans. Beenie Man is an extremely talented entertainer and we are happy that he will be again able to showcase his talents on stage in New York.”

Groovin’ In The Park will also feature Reggae legends, Beres Hammond and Jimmy Cliff as the show honors three nations celebrating milestone independence anniversaries this year: United States (236) as well as Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago who will both be celebrating golden anniversaries this year (50).

A day following reports that a prominent Dancehall singjay was being sought by American law enforcement officials in connection with a notorious Jamaican drug lord, a Roots/Reggae singer is also being investigated for such an association.

United States drug officials revealed on Wednesday that a well-renowned Reggae singer has appeared on their radar as a possible link to former West Kingston strong man, Christopher “Dudus” Coke. According to officials, documents are currently being processed as they are seeking to arrest the singer. Additionally, it was revealed that the singer plies his trade as producer and promoter, despite having no major hit songs to his name.

The report follows up Tuesday’s news that American law enforcement officials were probing a popular Dancehall singjay for drug-related allegations. The singjay being investigated has a green card according to the U.S, is Kingston-based and has several hit songs to his name. Additionally, the singjay reportedly has two warrants out for his arrest.

Christopher “Dudus” Coke currently awaits sentencing in the United States for charges in a drug case which he pled guilty to months earlier. Coke pled guilty to a count of racketeering conspiracy and a count of conspiracy to commit assault with a dangerous weapon in aid of racketeering.

Pusha T from the United States rap group Clipse has recorded a song paying tribute to extradited Tivoli Gardens strongman Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke.

The rapper is from the group which has done popular songs like Grindin, When Was The Last Time and Hot Damn.

Yesterday, the song, Dearly Beloved, that was done about Coke surfaced on the Internet.

In the song, Pusha T said: “Dearly beloved hail Dudus/ Machine gun chain smothered/ A mere child rebel soldier that’s what became of us/ Immortalised kingpins is what remains of us/ Money comes too fast for him to give it up/ And because of a war, he has to give it up/ First God then Dudus/ Rest in peace Vivian Blake. Shout out to Shower Posse.”

This is not the first time that a song has been done about Coke. Last year, Twin of Twins recorded Which Dudus that was very popular.

Coke was extradited to the United States last week after being caught by the police on Mandela Highway. In a search for him, more than 73 people were killed in Tivoli Gardens. The manhunt also took the security forces into inner cities, rural communities and upscale neighbourhoods where Coke and his associates were suspected to be hiding.

Dudus was indicted in the US on a range of drug and guntrafficking offences.
