Artist Spotlight : Etana

Etana  –  biography

It’s been five years since Jamaica’s reggae princess hit the music scene, and the genre has never looked back. Now, with two albums under her belt, Etana is a household name worldwide, with a voice and message that soothes and entertains.

Since Etana’s breakout hit Roots, the songbird has found herself as a staple on reggae charts across the globe. Following up with Wrong Address, the Strong One began to build a catalogue of conscious music… and a massive fan base.

Increasingly, her music connected with people through relatable messages of love, fighting injustice and prejudice, having pride and more.  “Overall, my music has to uplift. It can’t just be that I go in a studio and string words together. My music must have a message, it must have a purpose. It has to make people feel good and want to really listen to what I’m saying,” says Etana – who was born Shauna McKenzie.

In 2008 Etana released her debut album, The Strong One. It was a hit. The wildly successful debut album, recorded and released on the VP Records label, silenced critics who claimed Etana was a one-hit wonder. In fact, so popular and successful was The Strong One, that every one of the tracks on the album was released as a single – and also charted. The Strong One featured songs such as Warrior Love, Jah Chariot, Don’t Forget, I Am Not Afraid, Blessing, More & More, Caltariba System as well as her first two hits Roots and Wrong Address.

More than that, Etana had spread her wings and was filling clubs and stadiums in the Caribbean, North America and Europe – and it was a humbling experience.   “Travelling to another country to perform is perhaps one of the most exciting things for me. Especially if it is a country where English isn’t the first language. Being in Portugal or Spain, for example and hearing a crowd of 100,000 people sing every one of your songs word for word is just exhilarating”.

While touring, Etana also picked up a new hobby – collecting award trophies. Since her berth in the music world, she has copped one prestigious musical honour after another. Ranging from Best New Artiste, Female Vocalist of the Year and Reggae Singer of the Year to Most Admired Female Artiste, Cultural Artiste of the Year and several Album of Year trophies, Etana has a sizeable list of accolades behind her name.

Etana began to tease fans with what was to come on her next CD when she released Free, Happy Heart and August Town. Almost immediately, critics clamoured and fans anxiously awaited the release of her sophomore attempt at a full-length album. She continued to record, and in 2011 released Free Expressions. With this, Etana pulled off what many artistes are unable to – a successful second album. Free Expressions is lining up to be as successful as its predecessor with several of its featured tracks being released as singles.

“This time around, I got really involved in the making of the album. For The Strong One there were a team of writers but it’s pretty much all me and my pen in the majority of the songs on Free Expressions. That was an experience I enjoyed, and I am definitely more into writing these days,” the now married artiste says.

Crowds around the world seem to enjoy Etana’s increased input in this album, evidenced by her performing consistently on the biggest reggae festivals and shows around the world. In fact, Etana made her debut in South America in 2011.   “I’ve been blessed with this talent, and I don’t plan on slowing down for now,” she smiles. Etana has two more albums to be released by VP Records, and she promises that she’ll try and make it her best work yet each time.

Etana, the Jamaican-born, Miami-raised songstress, returns with her brand new digital-only EP Reggae on November 13th with VP Records. The 3-song preview off her upcoming studio album Better Tomorrow will give fans a taste of what is to come in February 2013. The entire set is produced by Shane Brown with Stanley “Rellee” Hayden co-creating the title track.

The charismatic singer, songwriter and performer incorporates elements of reggae, soul and pop into her captivating postmodern sound that tackles real life experiences. Etana’s unabashed romanticism shines on the soulful sway of “Reggae” and the r&b tinged “4 Play 2 Love (Start Over)” about her torn feelings of two lovers. The spine-chilling single “Better Tomorrow” addresses the atrocities of children in poverty-stricken communities, while instilling optimism for brighter days. Etana’s lyrical depth and revolutionary thought continue to impress and inspire her audience.

With a baby on the way, new EP and album in the works, Etana is in a place in her life where she looks forward to a promising future. She expands upon her 2010 sophomore album Free Expressions, which won praise for the being “a rarity: music that sermonizes, yet still sweetly serenades,” according to NPR. The anticipated album Better Tomorrow and EP Reggaeexpress a similar sentiment, while offering new-found wisdom and clarity. These releases also follow her 2008 critical acclaimed debut The Strong One, which featured massive hits “Warrior Love,” “Roots” “I’m Not Afraid,” “Blessings” and “Wrong Address” that topped reggae charts in The Caribbean, England and United States. During this period, Etana was nominated for Best New Reggae Artist at MOBO Awards and awarded Best Female Vocalist at both the Excellence in Music & Entertainment (EME) Awards and IRIE FM Radio Awards as well as the Best Solo Female Reggae Vocalist at the 1st annual Reggae Academy Awards. Vibe Magazine claimed she had already “established herself as a formidable performer and songwriter whose music and reputation precedes her.”

Gentleman, who is currently in Jamaica putting the finishing touches on the new disc was very upbeat about the project.

“It is nice to see how things have turned out with the album. We have some excellent songs that fans are gonna really enjoy” he said.

“The project came out of a natural vibe between the two of us without being planned. We put a lot of work into the songs and I am very happy with the finished product.”

With six albums under his belt and over one million collectively sold in Europe, the German platinum and award-winning singer Gentleman is long overdue for his U.S. debut. Diversity, set for release on February 14, 2012 with VP Records, charted at #1 in Germany as well as #2 in Switzerland and Austria and is the follow-up to his Europe platinum-selling record Confidence.

Gentleman is currently touring Europe and plans to embark on the second leg of the Diversity world tour throughout the U.S. and South America beginning in March 2012. The series of shows include a west coast run supporting SOJA and his debut NYC showcase. Dates and venues to be announced.

He immersed himself in the culture and music at the age of 18, making Jamaica his home away from home.

In 1997, he eventually got his first break with German hip-hip group, Freundeskreis, after delivering a verse on single “Tabula Rasa” with his distinctive singjay style. Since then, Gentleman has had a string of solo hits and platinum-selling records in Europe. He won Best National Artist five times for three different award shows (Echo Award 2003 & 2005, Comet Award 2005, 1Live Radio Award 2004 & 2005) and has been nominated twice for Best Reggae Artist (Martin 2004 Awards and Reggae and Soca Awards).  He has collaborated with artists ranging from pop superstars Pink and Destiny’s Child to reggae legends Michael Franti & Spearhead and Barrington Levy. Grammy-winning dancehall pioneer, Lady Saw is back naughty, nasty and explicitly electrifying with her new album My Way set for release on September 7th, 2010.  The record, her first with Toasting Music/Diva Records, distributed by Fontana/Universal, follows the 2007 release Walk Out, her final album on the reggae label VP Records.  Saw’s latest collection, featuring collaborations with multi-platinum rapper Eve and Ding Dong as well as production by Lady Saw along with Tony ‘CD’ Kelly, Lloyd ‘John John’ James, Danny Browne and Stephen McGregor, opens a new chapter for Saw and Divas Records productions.

“I wanted to have the independence and freedom to do things 100% my way. I can tell the producers what I want for my riddim and say what I want to say in my songs. No one is telling me what I can or can’t do on this album,” says Lady Saw.

Born Marion Hall, Lady Saw remains true to her sexually empowering, cheeky lyricism on My Way, but with an eye on reaching a wider audience. Whether it’s liberating anthems like “Every Way Mi Go” and “Party Til December” or her uncut delivery on “Muscle Control” and “5 Minutes,” this 16-track collection is jam-packed with radio ready tunes and the hardcore style that put Saw on the map with her massive 1994 debut release Lover Girl.  She also gives listeners a glimpse of Miss Marion Hall, her softer, more mature side, on the title track “My Way” and “I Am A Woman.”

“I have grown over the years. People ask me, ‘are you toning down’? I say, the nasty stuff is still there, just not as over the top,” she explains. “They still gonna really get the raw Lady Saw, especially when I perform. But, I wanted to make a record for everyone.”

With over three million albums sold and a Grammy under her frock for her collaboration with No Doubt on “Underneath it All,” Lady Saw is one of the most distinguished and influential artist in dancehall, reggae and hip hop. The songstress, deejay, producer and writer continues to headline shows worldwide, and her longevity reveals that true artistry always stands the test of time.  The multi-talented Jamaica native has had a hand in creating hits for artists like Beenie Man, Sizzla, Bounty Killer, Vegas, Vybz Kartel, Capelton and Spragga Benz. Her appeal has also resulted in dynamic collaborations with Gwen Stefani, Missy Elliot, Remy Ma, Trina, Nicki Minaj, Foxy Brown Michael Franti, and Pharrell Williams.

Tarrus Riley shines in Europe and US. Nabs RMAA Nomination

Reggae Singer and Songwriter Tarrus Riley ended his 2009-2010 Europe and North America ‘Contagious’ tour on a high note closing with a sensational set at the 17th annual Bob Marley Movements Caribbean Festival in Miami, Florida.

After a successful leg in US and Canada late last year, the artiste resumed his album title tour this January through March making waves in some thirty cities across France, Belgium, London, Sweden, Spain, Holland, Italy, Switzerland, Czech Republic and Germany as well as completing stints in California and Florida. His first extended set in Europe, while the cold whistled and howled outside, Riley warmed patrons up with some sweet music on the inside, “With Tarrus Riley you can always expect to hear ‘feel good music’…music with a meaning as well as music that uplifts the spirit and soul and I delivered just that. The set list had a great mix of material – hits from the previous albums including ‘She’s Royal’, ‘Lion Paw’ as well as current material from the Contagious album including ‘Start Anew’, ‘Love’s Contagious’, ‘Human Nature’, ‘Living The Life of A Gun’ among others. The crowd was highly responsive at each venue and you could see that they were visibly tuned in, singing along with us word for word and really enjoying themselves.”

Performing to sold out stops each night across Europe including Ghent in Belgium, the Sapphire Club and the Brixton Academy in London, Stockholm in Sweden and the U- Club in Wuppertal, Germany, Riley who was joined by rising Reggae stars I-Octane, Duane Stephenson and the Blak Soil band led by saxophonist extraordinaire Dean Fraser, then travelled to the US where they were well received  at the Fox Theater in Oakland, California, The Catalysts in Santa Cruz, the Arcata Theater in California amongst multiple additional venues before Riley capped things off as a headline act at the Bob Marley Movements Caribbean Festival. “The North America stops were also really great this time around…Still a bit chilly but definitely not as cold as Europe” said Tarrus. “We were concentrated this leg towards the West in California then headed South to Florida whereas the last time we touched a bit of everywhere including Canada, Rhode Island, New York, Virginia etc. We again brought the best of our positive vibes spreading the message of positivity, unity and love through good, clean music.”

And while Riley was covering significant ground on his international ‘Contagious’ Tour, he was also making a clean sweep at local award presentations as well as receiving international nods and securing top spots on international music charts. At the Excellence in Music and Entertainment (EME) he copped the Cultural Artiste of the Year as well as won the Best Cultural Artiste category at the local Youth View Awards. Following this, Riley’s laurels continued with recent nomination for top “International Reggae Artist” at RMAA (Reggae Music Achievement Awards) which will be held in Toronto, Canada on June 12, 2010 as well as he celebrates the number one spot for his album ‘Contagious’ in Canada on Galaxie TV Satellite Channel (Bell TV, Rogers TV, Videotron TV, MTS TV, Sasktel TV, Shaw TV, Telus TV).

A stellar first yearly quarter sealed by sold out tours and significant wins and nominations, Riley who is now back on the ‘Rock’ says he will resume writing and recording new material as well as continue to push his Contagious album which has been doing very well internationally, “I enjoy writing and making music. That process never stops…I love what I put out and the people love what we put out so we always have to keep it fresh and keep it going.”

Romain Virgo to sign with VP – VH1 to air ‘This Love’ video

Get the Flash Player to see the wordTube Media Player.

Romain Virgo will be making major strides next week when his This Love music video airs on US-based cable station VH1.

According to his manager, Dawin Brown, they have been in negotiations with VP Records, as the company is about to sign the budding star. During the negotiations, Brown said several songs from Virgo’s catalogue were submitted to them.

“They said they were really impressed with the This Love video. Cristy Barber (vice-president of marketing and promotions at VP Records) is kinda responsible for submitting it to MTV and VH1,while adding that the video is currently on the website for both stations.

All of this took place within a six-week period, Brown said.

“We just found out Thursday that it will be aired on VH1. So we are keeping our fingers crossed. We are just waiting for it to start showing,” he said.

Virgo said he was very excited about the development of his career.

“Jah know, a one of the greatest feeling. VH1 and MTV are world stations. I think it’s a good opportunity for the world to see who the true Romain Virgo is. I think it is a good way to bring me out there to the world,” noting that the video was done during his 2007 Digicel Rising Stars journey.

But this is not the only thing he has on his plate. This week he will shoot the video for Who Feels It Knows It in Kingston and St Ann. The video, Virgo said, would “look at hard-working people in every environment.”

He is also working on a self-titled album that will be released in May through VP Records. Virgo said it would have songs such as Caan Sleep, Murderer and several new tracks.

For the album, there will also be a series of promotional shows. And in the coming months, he will have shows in the US, Europe,Barbados , Bahamas, Grenada and St Martin.

“It will be a whole lot of work  for the year,” said Virgo.
