Nailah Thorbourne, more popularly known as Nyla and a former member of the internationally-acclaimed sister duo, Brick and Lace has become the first female artist from the 876 to be certified gold in three years for her feature as the lead vocalist on the Major Lazer single, Light It Up.
Light It Up, received gold certification in Germany and Italy for sales over 200,000 and 25,000 copies respectively. Additionally, the song has sold over 200,000 copies in the United Kingdom, thus earning silver certification.
This makes Nyla the first Jamaican female artiste since decorated dancer and musician, Mystic Davis featured on Major Lazer’s Bubble Butt single alongside Tyga, Bruno Mars and 2 Chainz. That single, released in 2013, was certified gold in the United States.
Only two other female artistes, Diana King (Shy Guy) and J.C. Lodge (Someone Loves You Honey), have earned silver or gold selling songs in the last 35 years.
In the U.S., Light It Up reached number eight on the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.
Nyla performed alongside Major Lazer earlier this month at a concert in Cuba and is set to perform alongside them in California at next month’s Coachella Festival.
